THE LATE RIOT.-The negroes state that
ttiey assaulted the members of the -Savannah
band because they h vd assaulted a colored
minstrel troupe of Charleston, which played in
Savannah a short time since.

LARCENY OF WATCHES. - Recently, officers
Coates and Quinn arrested Tho?. Harvey for
stealing a watch from Mr. H. Rosenbeck, and
another from Mr. W. A. Wilson. He waa
arraigned before the Mayor and committed to

OBDEBED ON DUTY-Yesterday morning
Office Reed appeared before Captain Hendricks
to answer the charge of having beaded a mob,
revolver in hand, and seized the customhouse.
Th J testimony introduced did not sustain the
.charge, and th)chief declared him acquitted,
and ordered bim to report for duty.
REPUBLICAN MEETING.-To-night there will
be a grand Republican meeting. It is reported
that Dr. Mackey will express his opinion of
Senator Sawyer and Congressman Bowen.

Press, in its account of the commencement
exercises at tbe Doe West Female College on

BEFORE THE MATOH.
At uiuo o'clock yesterday morning Messrs,
0. H. Schwing, Philip Saxe and B. A. McMan
us, and three negroes. Bate Izzard, Jamel
Barron and Benjamin Mills, were arraigned be?
fore the Mayor to answer the charge of beinf
engaged in the riot the day before.

The testimony against Mr. Schwing was that
he had fired two or three shots at the negroes,

BEFORE THE MAGISTRATE.
At twelve o'clock the acousod were brough
before Magistrate DeLarge, colored.
The magistrate called the case of Benjamit
Mills, when ko was informed by aooused'

discharged by the Mayer.
Lieutenant Lynoh, United States Army, the
sued out a warrant for the arrest of Mille
charging him with exhorting the negroes I

The office of the magistrate being found to

journed to the City Hall.
Lieutenant Lynch was sworn, and testifie
that he saw the commencement of the rio

special meeting of the Charleston Cbamb
of Commerce, held yesterday at the old Sta
Bank, at 12 o'clock M., a large attendance w
present.
First Vice President S. Y. Tupper called t
meeting to order, and stated that he had co
yened the Chamber at the request of ma:

in the preservation of good order and the i
purity of property in our community.,
It had been suggested that the moral inti
mee and aid of this body should be invoked

At a quarter of nine o'clock, the Mayor carno
in and called the body to crder.
A motion to dispense with the reading of the
minutes of the last meeting caused some dis?
cussion, Alderman Voigt thinking it very
queer that the minutes were never read and
confirmed.
The motion to dispense was carried.
PETITIONS.
Alderman T. J. Mackey read a petition from
the Sisters of Meroy. asking aid f-csa tbs city
to carry on their institution, the petition being
signed by twenty-five hundred citizens, repre?
senting $15,000,000 worth of property, two
thirds of the value of the real estate in the
city.
The petition was read by the Clerk, after
which Alderman T. J. Mackey offered a reso?
lution providing that tho Council should au?
thorize the MayorjSo proceed at once to obi
tain the distributive fudd*granted by the Le?
gislature for the relief of the transient sick and
poor in the oities au J iovrus of this State; and
that $6000 o? the share of the city ($11,000) be
given to the Sisters.

TO TBE EDITOR OF TBE NEWS.
The Mayor of Charleston is reported to have
said on Monday, that " he WSB powerless " to
keep order aud to protect guests wben they
come from a sister city to partake of oar hos?
pitalities. I pres?me he means that he don't
want to hort the party who pat him in power.
If this is so, then there is but one coarse
left for us to pursue, and that is, let every
law-abidinq citizen -arm himself and be prepar?
ed to defend his life and property, for tho
Chief Magistrate of this city says "he is pow?
erless."
The Savannah men will be invited back, and
when they come they will be escorted by fifteen
hundred men who will protect them. ***
