In March last th3 British ship Blue Jacket was bumed at sea, while on ber way from New Zealand to England. Ont of sixty nine per Bona oo board only eigbt are known to have been saved. The London Herald pubbsbea the following letter from ons of tbo surv.vors, addressed to his motlier, and dated at Tort Stanley, Falkland Islands, April 29 : I will teh you what has happened on board the Blue Jacket since abe left Lyttleton up to the time ?ho wa? burned. We left that port February 19. We bad seven sa.oon passen? gers grown up, twelve second cabin, and seven children, Al young, and a stewardess of the saloon. Ol the passengers there were *>ix women; two of the children wer at the breast. Ship's company ali told, forty-two. Total num? ber of people on board, sixty-two, and sevei. children. There was a liUle sea sickness at starting; tba. soon passed away. We made a very go* d passage lo the Horn in twenty diys. On tbe 7ih of March we passed ibe Falkland Islands in sight, l.ttle dreaming at that time ?hat this piace would be our refu/e before -Jpn* Ott FIBS. But on tbe Tuesday fellowing there was a scene that I never wiso, to view ag in. About half-pant one in the afternoon smoke was Been issuing out of the fore hatchway. We well , knew what w&s the matter, and in about ten miauten' ime there Was a good Bupply of water being played opon it. There were no flames, but very e. ernie smoke arising. As soon as thu captain saw that i was likely to prove serious, he told Mr. .Williams to get the yacht slung and provisioned and ready for going over tue side; then the two life-boals were got ready for lowering and provisioned. In the mean? time, I had a few hands shortening sail. While this was proceeding t, e pumps were still kept going, every one working for his life. It tia pened to be a very fine afternoon; everything was. being done to extinguish tbe fire, and a.out BIX o'clock we thought we would getsthe np er hand of it. Half an honr after? wards it broke out ten times worse than ever. We still kept hard at it until a little after nine that night, at which time the coals that were in the forepai t had caught tire, and in ten minutes after the whole of the forecastle was in a bisse. Then our fate appeared sealed. CASI ADRIFT. Tbe order was given to get the yacht over the Bice, which was done with great nek ot limbs, as there was a nasty sea running, but she was got over all safe. Before lowering her into the water we got the women and children into her all sa fe, then lowered her; after wmoh the remaining passengers got in. the fire in the meantime working aft very rapidly. ?n the port life-boat there were Mr. Williams and his watch. In the starboard boat. Mr. Bell and his watoh. 1 was in the j acht. The other boatB left the ship a little before us, for we eouidnot prevail upon tho captain for some, time to leave the ship, and I do not think he would bave left her if he had nit promised the ladies that he would take charge of them. He said he did not like to leave the old ship. 80 we out away and drifted clear of the ship. About an honr after we left the foremast feb over the side; bait an hour afterwards the main and mizzen followed its example, with a "heavy ci ash. The vessel WIUB then in one masa of flames-it was a splendid and fearful eigbt to witness. We kept as near the ship as pos? sible, thinking a vessel might aee the fire and bear down to her; bat there was no such lock. Next day there was a dead calm, and Mr. Wil? hams came on board the yacht, so we straight? ened up the boat a little and made things more comfortable. In the evening the captain told me to go to the mate's boat and Mr. Williame to stay io the yacht. Soon after dark a br?ese sprung up. sud was increasing all night. We kept together all night by meaos of lanterns, which we held up ?very now and then. Next morning the other two boats were well ahead; the breesa was still i o cr eas in?, aid io two hours' time we pi ked them up. Mr. Wilhams did not make any sign to come into bis boat again, so when the captain gave ns the cours", to the Falkland Islands we went on to ?se it we could pick the other boat np. Before we could see her tbe yacht Was out of sight. When we came np to the second mate's boat we both lowered our sails ?nd hove to, for the yacht to get np to ns again. While we -were waiting we bad dinner, which consisted ot about a quarter of a pound of preserved meat, a very few bits of bisco.it (which bad got spoiled with salt water coming into th? boat ) and not quite two -gills of water. We. had a ?retty good supply of - provisions and water, ut we Knew not bow long we would have to be in the boat before wo were picked UD or reach? ed laud. We waited .there some time, but no ?acht was to ba seen, and we were losing the ur wind, HO we aeked Mr. Bell if he was going to wait any longer.
