From what has been gathered, we judge that the affair Was very much exaggerated. STABBING AFFAIB. -On Friday night last dur? ing a difficulty between several white and col? ored men, on King-street, a white man named W. H. Hodges s tabb jd a colored man, inflict? ing a painful wound. Hodges was arraigned before the Mayor Saturday, and then th9 case was turned over to a magistrate. THE FATAL BYOTOLE.- We see by our foreign files that Mr, J. Heywood Whitehead, an Eog glish gentleman who had many friends in Charleston, and who, some time ago, presented a flag to the St. George's Society, died recent? ly, in Cumberland, England? from accidental injuries received while riding a velocipede. JOHN CHINAMAN FOB THE BLUE RIDGE RAIL? ROAD.-The Aicusta, Chronicle mentioas a re? port that the contractors "for the Blue Bidsre Railroad had determined to employ Chinese instead of negio labor on the road, and that a large force of these people will be procured from the West and brought out at once to South Carolina. COLLECTOR OF CUSTOMS.-Dr. A. G. Mackey, the late incumbent, arrived here Saturday night. Mr. Clark bas not yet arrived; it is un? derstood that he is in Boston winding up his business affairs-ho not being allowed to en? gage in any business while Collector. The Collector's friends think he will enter upon the duties of his office early this week. THE Rica CROP NEAR SAVANNAH.-The Savan? nah News of Saturday says that "reports from plantations along the river give the most fa? vorable accounts of the rice crop, whioh bids fair to be one of the best that has ever been grown. We have seen several s'alks, cut from the Ferry plantation, owned by Dr. Thomas F. Horeven, and the Proctor plantation, owned by Colonel John Horeven. The stalks were nearly six feet io height, and some of the ears eleven and a half inches in length." PENITENTIARY AFFAIRS-ESCAPE OF CON? VICTS.-On Wednesday last, while four colored convicts were engaged in banting brick on the ?anal at Columbia, a- signal was give by ore of them, when thpy all immediately dropped their wheelbarrows and sprung upon a white man, ((who was guarding them,) took form bim bis .gun and pistol, gave him a beating, and then made off. The same day another convict made ibis escape through a hole under the fence, and he same night still another made his escape. A. colored convict died on Wednesday night. CHIMNEY CONTRACTORS.- The mea who de? sire to interfere with the twittering birds who make their homes in the chimneys-that ip, those who desire to be ohimney contractors are numerous; among them are : John Robin? son, J. Patrie, M. Brown. Jr., Peter Ashe, .Jick Frost, N. T. Oliver, colored, and John T. Milligan, white, they suppose that they will be voted for at the meeting of Council to? morrow night; but as the Mayor has failed to give the five days' not ne required before an ?election can be held, the candidates mast wait ?until to-morrow night week. H. Bischoff & Co., East Bay, near Cumberland-street, have completed the improvements mentioned in THE NEWS some time back. Their store is now one of the best arranged and most convenient on the Bay. The extension in the roar has added laigely to its area and capacity, and an iron tramway, running from State-street to Bast Bay, enables li6avy barrels and other goods to be moved with taoility. MAEBJET? o o?-iTE OF ms WIFE.-THE NEWS, of Saturday, gave an account of a festive col? ored fellow, Thos. Anderson by name, who de? serted his wife, aud on Thursday night last carried a young girl to the minister to be join? ed in the "bonds of holy wedlock," but before tbe oeremony was gotten underway hie wife confronted him and forbade the marriage, with her marriage certificate "showing cause why. On Saturday Thomas carried tho girl, whosa name is Jane Boag, to tho office of Magistrate Mishaw, colored, who performed the marriage oeremony. Shortly aftor the ceremony, Anderson's first wife preferred charges against him for bigamy. He was arrested and, being unable to tarnish security for bis appearance for trial, was com? mitted to jail. THE BOXY ELECTED AND QUALIFIED WANT THE OFFICES.-The Mayor, instead of calling apon the police force to eject the officers who have refused to yield their offices to their 'duly elected and qualified successors," has resorted to the mild course of requesting them to retire. On Saturday, he addressed letters to P. C. Querry, City Sheriff; W. N. Hushes, Assessor, and C. P. Frazer, Assistant Asses? sor, requesting them to turn their books and papers over to their "duly eleotei and quali? fied successors." They referred the letters to their attorneys, Messrs. Leaesne and Miles, who informed the Mayor that the officers de? clined to comply with the request.. Nothing farther was done by the Mayor, Saturday, but it ia understood that decisive steps will be taken to-day. THE Aura HOUSE.-On Saturday, Alderman T. J. Mackey, who, the night before, was elect? ed Chairman of the Commissioners of the Alms House, visited that institution, and ex? pressed himself as well pleased with the man? ner in whioh it was kept. lt is reported that both General Wm. Gurney |. and Alderman T. J. Mackey desired to be Chair? man of the Board of Commissioners, and that the majority of the members had pledged them? selves to vote for the former. Mackey 's friends went around to see those who were understood to be in favor of the General as chairman, and told them that their candidate desired to sup? ply the Alms House with groceries from his commission house, and that, as Chairman of the Board, he could not under the law do it. The General's friends swallowed the bait; re? sult : the election of Alderman Mackey. VASRANTS.-Daring Friday night a number ot negroes were arrested while asleep on the stalls in the market, and on Saturday were brought up before the Mayor, who sent them to the House of Correction, to be supported by the taxes wrong from those who work. Daddy Cain has an editorial in the last Missionary Record addressed to these vagrants, in which he tells them that tho oity is not large enough to furnish work to "one-tenth of the voters who elected Mr. Pillsbury and his friends," aud he ' suggests, therefore, that the laborers do not exact too much from Mr. Jenks or the Mayor." He thinks "that if three hundred of those men who have applied for work would go to the country and work the soil or the marl diggings, they would make more money, and appear to more advantage in society." This advice of Daddy Cain's is very good, and it is to be hoped that the idle negroes of the city will aot upon it, ASSAULT WITH INTENT TO MURDEH.-On Saturday morning Michael Donaghue, a mem? ber of the police force, was arraigned before the Mayor to answer the chat ge of committing an assault and battery, with intent to murder, upon Mr. Christian Nelson, who lives at tho corner of Sing and Tradd-streets. The Mayor relieved the accused from duty and turned the case over to a magistrate. Tho case was carried before Justice Mackey, t'au testimony before whom showed that on Friday night the accused, while on duty, heard a dog barking in Mr. Nelson's yard. He pushed open a door and ordered the animal to shut its mooth. Mr. Nelson then requested the police? man to "mind his own Lusiness," whereupon said policeman seized Mr. N. and beat him on the head with his club and dragged him around loosely, muoh to the detriment of Mr. N.'s flesh and clothing. The magistrate required the accused to furnish $300 so-urity for his good behavior and $200 for his appearance for trial, whioh he did and was dismissed. CBUMBS.-Ur. The negroes are talking and shaking their heads considerably in regard to the recent elections, asserting "dat it is mity queer dat so many mnrlaters should get into offl* " Jarno? It is reported that on an ? after the lit of August there will be a daily paper started in Charleston, in the interest, of republicanism. But what will they think when thoy read the following about tho young man that married out of a diffionltj: Two or three days ago an old colored woman went to a magistrate and desired to know if a young colored man could no t be arrestod aod punished for nuning ber daughter under a promise of marriage. The magistrate did not at first know exactly what to do, but finally issued a peace warrant for the arrest of tho said yourg man, who shortly after appeared before him; also came the mother and the young girl, accompanied by a hoat of ber young l?malo friends. After much shedding of tears, protestations of undying love and the rest on ibo part of the young girl, the young man sa d that rather than have so much fuss about it he would marry the girl.
