AB has been stated by THE NEWS, there was a great amount of caucusing by the Pillsbury faction iu roferenoe to tho offices of tho Polico Department. This caucusing and canvassing has occupie d nearly all of the time of said faction for several Weeks past, and up to balf past one o'clock Friday afternoon there was a diversity of opinion. The Mayor had pledged himself and his faction to tho support of Major R. H. Willoughby, but five of the faction, viz : Aldermen Voigt, Cunningham, Geddings, How? ard, colored, and McKinlay, colored, not only refused to support him, but declared them? selves in favor of Hendricks as the more effi? cient of the two candidates, and at the hour mentioned formally seceded from the caucus. The leader of the Mackey it os hearing of this secession, summoned his adherents and by a well-timed flank movement formed a junction with the secessionists, and after a collation in the police barracks, where champagne and various refreshments were lavishly furnished bj' Captain Hendricks, the seven Mackeyites (T. J. and ?. W. M. Mackey, Barrow, L. F. and E. P. Wall, colored, Thorne, colored, and Hampton, colored,} and the re?us tnt five PillBburyites agreed to support Captain Hen? dricks for Chief, Lieutenant Chapman for First, and W.N. Tait for Wee md Lieutenant-Taft, in their judgment, being an active Repub? lican, and Hendricks and Chapman almost Republicans. The Pillsbury i tes (tbe Mayor, Potter, Greene, Collins, bm all, colored, and Brown, colored,) arranged their tickets as follows: Major R. H. Willoughby, Chief, T. B. Chapman, First, and Benjaman Holloway, colored, son of Alderman Holloway, Second Lieutenant. They hoped that the five who had seceded would think bet? ter of their action, return into the fold of the faithful, and vote the Willoughby ticket, and therefore came into the Council chamber con? fidant of success. The election resulted in Hendricks receiving 12 votes, T. B. Chapman 17, W. N. Taft 12, Holloway, odored, 6-Hendricks, Chapman and Taft, the nominees of the Mackeyites and "splits," being elected, muoh to the disgust of the "faithful," and especially of Alderman Hol? loway, who, on being commiserated with in the Council chamber by Alderman Potter, in? dignantly denounced what he termed the treachery of those with whom he had acted, and bitterly bemoaned his failure to get his "price." The flink movement of the Maokeyites not only defeated the Willoughby tioket, but also occasioned the election of several of their friends as Commissioners of Markets, and es? pecially in throwing off the tioket Julius Rou mil lat and placing thereon and electing Thomas Aiken, a colored butcher, weighing about three hundred pounds, who is said to be quite a respectable colored man, and of some weight among bia class. The result of this eleotion ia due to what is termed the anti-Massachusetts party, (com? posed of native Radicals.) which is rapidly growing in numbers, and who have for their object the expulsion from the State of all carpet-baggers-nearly all of whom are from Massachusetts, hence the name anti-Massa? chusetts. To this party Major Willoughby owes his defeat, and all members of the Radi - oal party, not natives of Charleston, will here? after meet with strenuous opposition from this anti-Massachusetts clique. The eleetion to-morrow night for Supervi? sors of the High School, Chimney Contractors, Ac., will, it is asserted, be full of interest, and it is farther announced that Alderman T. J. Mackey will, mach to the disgust of numerous office-seekers, lead his band in support of D. T. Corbin, believing as they do that the oity in giving him only one office while the State has giajp him five has done him great injustice. ! They claim that the city should aid him in supporting himself and family by allowing bim, in addition to his offices as United States Dis? trict Attorney, ($15,000 per annum;) President of the Senate and also a member, ($1600 per I annum;) Commissioner of Elections, ($5 per day wben employed;) Codifier of the Laws, ($3000 per annum;) City Attorney, ($1100 per annum;) several other offlcea in the gift of Council. , _ COLLECTOR OF CUSTOMS.-A letter from Wash? ington reoeived beru Saturday, states that Mr. G. W. Clark left there for Charleston on the 8th with his commission as Collector of this Port in his pocket, and also an order to super? sede Dr. A. G. Mackey. He is expected to reach here on Wednesday. Dr. M. will pro? bably arrive to-day. Mr. Clark will make a olean sweep in the Customhouse. It is not yet known who will be appointed to fill the positions of the retired officers, nor what will be the proportion of colored men. The friends of Dr. Mackey are confident that the Senate will not confirm the appointment of Mr. Clark. _ ._ BRUTAL MTTBBER AT ASHBJPOO FKKBY.-THE NEWS' on Saturday learned the following re? garding a brutal murder committed on Tues? day last, by three negroes, at Aihepoo Ferry, on the Charleston and Savannah Railroad, thirty-seven miles from the oity: A negro man, it appears, had interfered with the do? mestic arrangements of another negro. The wronged husband, with two friends, went to the plantation where the disturber of his peace lived, and, without warning, shot him. The negro fell and was then backed to pieces with hoes by the two friends. Tho victim's head was beaten in, and his legs and arma out off.; The husband has escaped, but his companions are under arrest. THE ROW TS THE FIBXPBOOF BUTJJUWO on Friday afternoon, between F. C. Miller and Mark Reynolds, durinsr which the latter gave the former a severe drubbing despite the dis? play of his pistol, waa. concluded then and there, and ail parties ?ppeatd to be satisfied. But not so. Saturday morning F. C. Miller ap? peared before Magistrate Mackey and sued out a warrant for the arrest of Reynolds, on the charge of assault and battery. Reynolds was arrested, and gave bonds in the sum ot $500 to appear for trial at the General Sessions of the State Court in November next. It is but Jus? tice to Miller to state that be waa knocked down once when not even aware of the Drei? en oe of his adversary. OFMOES DEMANDED - On Saturday last Mr, P. J. Coogan, who was recently elected Oity Assessor, applied at the Assessor's office to Mr. W. N Hashes, late incumbent, and de? manded it, showing bte authority. COLUMBIA ITEMS.-It ia said that nine sepa? rate and diatiuot bids for the completion of the Blue Ridge Railroad were submitted to the commissioners at their roceat meeting. Mesbrs. Wade Hampton, L. D. Ch ida, and J. G. Gibbes who opposed the recent railroad con? solidation at Columbia, because "they did not desire to see the capital a wayside station," were loft out in the eleotion of the new board. A preliminary contract was executed on Saturday, betwoon the Executive Committee of the Blue Ridge Railroad Company and Mesara. J. Y. Crisvill, John J. Patterson and James M. Sellers, of Pennsylvania, for the construction of the road, including tunnelling and super? structure, &c- the entire road to Knoxville to bo completed in two years from the 1st of August next. THE MARKET FOB SOUTHBBN SECURITIES. The New York Herald of Thursday, in its money article, says: In Southern securities the new North Caro? linas were weak and pressed for sale, owing to the issue of a large number of new bonds to the Western North Carolina Railroad Company, dated April 1 1869. Tennessees were more steady, and io some quarters there was a feel? ing that the intercut would be paid up, os toe railroads would be forced to liquidate their indebtedness to the State. Louisiana levee bonds are higher for the sixes, but weak in the eights. South Carolinas were weak under numerous sales, some suspiciously like "washoe." The whole market was heavy, however, in sympathy with the general course of the day. THE MILLS HOUSE TO BE OPENED ON THE 20TH OF OCTOBER. -For some time past a na n ber of rumors have been afloat regarding the reopening of this hotel. From a party who has been engaged in making the arrangements with the owners, .THE NEWS learns that the house will be reopened on the 20th of October by Messrs. G. W. Parker & Brother. An engineer will be here next week for the purpose of making arrangements for an eleva? tor of the latest model. Messrs. Russell & Co., of Boston, have been commissioned to supply $75,000 worth of the best furniture. The pro? prietors propose to charge $3 53 per day, and at (he bar, which is to be luxuriously fitted up and lavishly supplied with the best of liquors, the ohorge per drink will only, be fifteen cents. This last item, we are nell aware, is of no in? terest to any one, and it is only inserted to show that the proprietors are determined to be reasonable in their rates. Mr. G. W. Parker is a. member of the firm of Stoddard & Co., on Nassau-street, New York, which also has a large commercial house in Kalamazoo, Michigan. CRUMBS.-Alderman Barrow wants to be Keeper of the Poorhouse. The Mayor disposed of two or tbree vagrants on Saturday. Two little negro boya, respectively named Thomas Grant ?nd Joseph Waring, got into a diffloulty Saturday, in Calhoun-Btreet, daring which Waring stabbed Grant in the shoulder. Both were arreated.
