Lathers has retired from the Great W. stern Manne lnsurar.ee Company, over winch he har presided so ably since its organization, and John A. Parker, Esq., the first Vice President, has been elected in his place. Colonel Lamers has been an abie, lib? eral and indefatigable executive officer, and the eminent success of the company has been due in no small degree tb his wisc management. .Jfco has a very considerable private fortune, and the conduct of bis private affairs calls for al! of tbe time he feels willing to devote to business pursuits. During the thirteen years of Colonel Lathers' administration, the Great 'Western hts earned over six million dollars in net pro? fita. AN INTERESTING PRESENTA) A BBB VICE OF PLATE PRESENTED TO OA MCMILLAN, OE THE "CITY POINT.' Prop o i td R CT Iv al of tile M a. ri ne Sc .kip. Some Tears before tbe beginning oi war the Marine ScboolBbtp Lodebar bought and put into successful open Tbe project, in its first beginning, with every kind of discouragement, t last the good brig was bought and aboard a number of boys who had therel been wandering about the streets of Ch ton. These received a sound commercia marine education, it being the- aim ol Board of Trustees to qualify every boy foi position to which as a seaman be mig called. This was the first mercantile-m sckoolship ever in operation, and it is a t ing fact that South Carolina, which ha first long line of railroad; which inventei steam plough; which had the first thor system of common school education, which first applied iron to the purposes ol ri?e defence, should also have been the most, by tbe institution of a marine scboo and a sailor's home, to show her appreci; of the worth and importance of the sailor The scboo ls hip was, we believe, maiol; work of the fie v. W. B. Yates, or this After a while earnest assistants came lo him, and when the brig was bought and n ed off tbe Battery, there were among tbe tees the mimes of W. C. Bee, Heriot, I More, R. Yeadon and W. B. Yates. The BC soon became a success, and had in all a sixty graduates. At a meeting held on February 6,1861, t ter was read from Commodore M. Berri whiob that gallant seaman said tbat be given a silver trumpet as a prize to tbe graduate of the marine school to whom command of a ship should be given. ' was the cause of the meeting yesterday aboard the steamer City Point which were present: Robert Mure, Esq., C nal J. D. Aiken, R. Caldwell, A. P. Caldv W. C. Bee, Captain dowell, Commodore ( etter, the Rev. W. B. Yates, Captain Nov Lieu te?an t Hades! on, and others. The mee was called to order by Robert Mure, Esq., said that the silver trumpet presented by Ci mod ore Berry had been sent np the com with the family plate, and bad there been g bled by the notorious Sherman. Bat it ! seemed to the trustees that some tes timo was due the grad?ate who had first fulfl the conditions of the trust, and he therel called on the Rev. W. B. Yates to presen Captain George McMillan, of the steamer "( Point," the reward to which he waa j as t ly titled. The Rev. Mr. Yates, in making th^Prea tatton, spoke most eloquently of the energi assistance given by Mr. John Caldwell in est fishing the sohoolship, and paid a men tribute to the gallantry and skill of the rec ent-Captain McMillan. Mr. Yatei then presented to Captain Mci lan a very handsome set of solid silver fo; and spoons, engraved with bis name, wt Colonel J. D. Aiken, in behalf of Captain 1 Millan, spoke as follow? : I esteem it a peculiar privilege to be perm ted to participate in this interesting ceremoi so creditable to the parties concerne to the committee, who have cherished a: so faithfully carried out the benevolent desi of taat successful navigator, the late Capta Berry; to you,- sur, who are so eminently t sailor'B friend, and who have exhibited yo characteristic zaal on this occasion; and to t unassuming, but not the less deserving a: skilful seaman, Captain M -lillian, whose mo est merit has so properly secured to him ttl handsome testim nial at your bands. Exhibitions of that- kind, at all timos e tremely pleasing in themselves, are valuab stimulants to the friendless and solitary toil in whatever flold; he feels that there are go: men, even among the multitude of evil and BE fish, who watch over and reward the wort! laborer; eapecia'iy encouraging is this reooj Ditton of humble out virtuous toil to those wt go down to the sea in ships, who brava tb terrors of the deep, and who grow familii with dangers which appal the stoutest heart? Thia occasion is particularly pleasing, b canse it gives hope that that admirable ins! tu?on. the "Sohoolship," may be again revi' ed. We need it tot the good ot our reviv?: commerce; we need it for the benefit of mac idle and indigent boys; we ne ed it for the ci ble (md manly youth, who has the spirit ac tbe instinct of a noble manhood and awaits ii impatient development. In behalf of Captain McMillan, I thank yoi {entlemen, for this handsome evidence of yot iudness and for the noble spirit which suj zested it, and ask your co-operation in split Lag the main brace. The oompany then "spliced the main brace, and entered upon the active festivities of th evening. The healths were draak, in ailene? of General Stephen Elliott and Commodoi Berry, and among the toasts that followe were : Mr. Robert Mure, the Agents of th Florida line, Commander Coxettor, Captai dowell, Parson Yates, and the Engineer of th City Point. All were responded to, and th anecdotes to which the occasion gave ris proved the necessity of recording us rapidly a possible the stray leaves which will make ui the most interesting chapters in the history o the war. Captain M. L. Aimar, the captain of th Sohoolship, was not forgotten, and there wa evident an earnest desire to re-establish, ai soon as possible, an institution which can di so much in reclaiming and utilizing the wan dering youth of our city. After spending aomi time in gossip and chat, the company separat ed; and the writer feels that be cannot exactlj express the fall measure of thanks which an the due of the City Point and Messrs. J. D Aiken & Co., for their kind and hospitable en? tertainment. May their shadow never grow WHAT IS THE MATTXB ?-A gentleman resid? ing in Columbia, a short time since>wrote to a merchant of this oity to send him some goods, tolling him that if he did not receive notifica? tion of their being obtained by the 21st of this month, it would be useless to do anything fur? ther in the matter. THE LOBT DIAMOND PTN.-It will be remem? bered, that ou or about the 24*h of December last, Mrs. Thoa. N. Gadsden loBton the street a breastpin containing twenty-eight diamonds, and valued at eight hundred dollars. On the inside of the pin waa engraved the name, "Thos. N. Gads en." Of it nothing, SB we learn, was heard from the time of the losing until the 24th of April last, when Mrs. Gadsden was informed that a negro woman named Mary Austin, living near the comer of Wash? ington and Inspection streets, had foanJ it. The woman, on bein; asked about it, and hav? ing the pin described to her, said tbat she had it. No legal steps were taken to secure the pin until yesterday, when a warrant was issued by Justice Mackey, for the arrest of the woman and her son, Wm. Fuller. Faller stated that he had sold the pio to a storekeeper, on King street, for twenty-three dollars and a pl lin gold ring. Fuller was then taken before the store? keeper, who not only denied having purchased the pin, but asserted that he had never seen the boy before. After a hearing of the case, Justice Mackey dismissed the accused on the ground that an action could not lie under the circumstances. CRUMBS.-The Lidies' Memorial Association will meet at the Widow's Home at six o'clock this afternoon. Every night, between the hoars of seven and twelve o'clock, a gang of negroes assemble on King-street, above Morris, and annoy the people in the neighborhood and the passers by with their loud, profane and indecent conver? sation. If*lbe XIX Century Publication Company do not have a care, they will be indicted by "the powers that be" for caricaturing their weak points. Tbe illustrations of the forth? coming Joly number are entitled, "Scott's Tactics-revised edition printed in colors." The new militia have a place in the pic turo this time. The Mayor yesterday disposed of ten devo? tees of "fusil oil." It ia generally believed that the negroes will soon fill the petty offices of the United States Court. The car horses are now supplied with the Dexter horse bonnet, and they are said to work to a charm. The gold cross and chain raffled on Thursday evening last, by the Sisters of Mercy, for the benefit of the Female Orphan Asylum, in Quoon-street, WAS won by Mrs. C. Dann. The number of the chance was 142. The yellow fever has disappeared from toe ship at favannah, and she will leave there for the North to-morrow. THE MAN WHO ATTEMPTED TO SELL MOSBIS' ISLAND.-A brief mention jf an attempt to sell Morris' Island, mide by a swindler in the North, has already appeared. From the Pro? vidence, Bb ode Island, Herald, we leam that about the first of this year a person claiming Charleston, 8. C., as his home, and calling himself Colonel Andrew J. Bodgera, went to Providence and pat up at the Aldrich House. He patronized the livery stables, smoked the best cigars and drank the choicest liquors-all on tick. Being possessed of overpowering cheek, and showing no appearance of anything like shrewdness or ability to carry out a swin? dle, no one suspected him, and be continued his course without interruption, borrowing fives and tens of his many acquaintances, and always forgetting to pay. He said he was the owner of Moms' Island, and selected Mr. Frank G. Allen as a broker to assist him in the disposal of it. At the same time he deposited in the bandi of Mr. Allen a draft, drawn by himself, and accepted by an ostensible party, J. P. Klingle, of Washington, D. C. He informed Mr Kilborn that he b id deposited that amonut-f3500-in money with Mr. Allen, but that it would be detrimental to bis interests in the sale of his property to draw it. He gave drafts on responsible parties, which were dishonored and bis vlllany was exposed. Rodgers while there waa engaged ostensibly in recruiting for the Cuban army, and made seve? ral ineffectual attempts in New York to raise money from the Junta. . Rodgers is a preoious rascal. In 1861 he en eluted as Andrew J. Livingston, in Company G, 3d Georgia Begiment. He attempted to desert, but was caught and sentenced to be shot. The papers of the court-martial were lost, and he escaped the shooting, bat in 13-32 waa drammed out of service. Shortly after, by some rascality, he obtained a captain's commission, and raised a company of cavalry, whiefa" soon became a terror io all good people oa account of their robberies and other hiwlas:! acts committed on the peopl j. Ridgers hop - his headquarters and and aa office in Uichmoad, where ho also car? ried on the suhitituto business. In 18CJ Rodgers ivout to New York from Sa? vannah, taking with him forged railroad re? ceipts for alargo quantity of cotton oa the line of the Gulf Railroad. Un those bogas raceipte he obtained a large amount of money, and re? turned to Savannah with the agents cf the par? ties to whom he had sold the cotton, and to whom be was to make the deliveries. A steam? er was chartered and everytbing made ready for the tnp, wheo he said ho had forgotten some important papers, and went for them, telling the captain to go ahead, that he would take bis baggy and cut across the neck and intercept the boat at Thunderbolt, only four miles by land, while it was distant by water some sixteen or eighteen miles. The boat left and so did Bodgers, and that was tho last that the agents heard of bim or of the cotton. TRUNKS, VALISES, AC, repaired, covered aod generally overhauled, at F. F.
