The canvass is carried on with a good 'deal of bitterness on both sides. -A terrific thunder and rain storm passed over Newborn* North Carolina, on Friday even? ing. A stone budding in rear of ,tBe Gaston House was struck by lightning, and . several houses were consumed by Are. A vessel in the harbor and the steamer Louisa Moore were also struck sud considerably damaged. No' one waa seriously injured.. There was a large and motley crowd inude in an almost stifling at? mosphere. He refused to give any indication of his decision. -A careful compilation of the official figures at the lato French eleotions shews that there were in the whole country 5,579.885 "dynastio" .votes, and 2 416 931 of all shades of opposition. From her great stowage opacity and superior steadiness on the water, the Great Eastern can be used for laying ocean telegraph cables, and is now engaged in depositing the French cable along the bottom of tue Atlantic The officers and crew hare acquired expe? rience by their previous work in laying the last English cable, and will no doubt be here? after employed on similar expeditions^ as ocean telegraphic communications have not yet been completed around the globe. Wo may next hear of a company to lay a line from San Francisco to Yokohama and Guit?n. ?The New Yorkers are now talking about getting np a bigger jubilee in their oity than tho Bostonians lately had. The New York Telegram of Wednesday says : "Already we un dei stand the Philharmonic Ho3iofcy is moving in the matter. At a recent meeting it was re? solved next year to have in this oity a musical jubileo wbioh will completely overshadow the recent event in the Hutt The sarvices of St. Michael Costa will be secured for the occasion. Henoe, the Boston Jubilee has already borne good fruit. We can raise twenty thousand trained singers here andan appropriate orches? tra. Cost? is the first conductor in the world. No Cubaos are permitted to rendezvous at these headquarters, they being kept by themselves at another recruiting depot, and having Cuban officers to command them. Money bas boen very lavishly distributed among tbe recruits'/ by tho members bf the Cuban Junta, who are said fco have a large amount ot funds deposited under guard at a store. Tbe Junta expect to use, or have already used, a gfeat portion of these hinda in making con? tracts for arms and ammunition, purchasing aappiies'of un forms, and in securing vessels. to convey the troops to Cuba.' It' is believed that they have expended enormous - sums in carrying but their designs; and that they have afforded an excellent opportunity to contrac? tors for speculation. It is now reported to b9 the intention of the Junta to substitute new oflicers in the proposed expedition tor the present officers, in case the latter are com? pelled to abandon their position through the action of tbe government. -The statistics of immigration at-New York are still astounding to aU who ex tm me them, in comparison with the figures for previous years. Up . to June 16, there had. been landed at Castle Garden 124,088 foreteflers daring the present year-more by thousands than ever be? fore during the same period, and nearly 80,000 more than during tbe same time last year. Tho nam. bor of Germans is the greatest-40,950 Le? land follows with 25,854, the latter" figures being Jtor tho time up to the IC th o? June. There is something significant in the move? ment of Swedes, In 1866 the wholo number of natives of Sweden who, caine to this country waa but IO?. For the twenty j oars between 1847 ?nd 186Y tho whole n amber from th it country wa? 26,565. In 1867 the number waa 1695, and In 1668 it waa 14,526, and during the time np to the 16th of Jane of the present year tho Sweden bave already numbered 14,429. One thousand more of t lio samo nationality ar* rived during the ensuing week. It is estima? ted, from carefully prepared data at the statis? tical bureau of the Treasury Department at Washington, that during the past thirteen years we have received and asshnilated two and a half million immigrant's .'from' pthor lands. -Captain Ryan managed his esoape from tho United States Marshal in New York very neatly. After tbo Junta had boon disposed of, he leit court with a nonchalant air, proposing to call at the Metropolitan Botel before he went to jail. The deputy accompanied bim in a carriage. When the call was concluded, Ryan waived adieu to his companions, and turning the corner from Broadway into Houstou-street, handed tho deputy over to the tender care of a dozen or more friends, whom he encountered "accidentally," and at tho same timo tossed to the friends a fifty dollar bill, saying : "Boys, take good oare of him. Treat him well, for he used me like a prince." The colonel kissed his hand, jumped into a carriage and was lost in the whirl bf vehiolea on Broadway. The dozen friends had meantime caught the fle? ing bill, and with a firm grasp, though their hands wore gloved in kids, had also talen hold of tho deputy. The official made frantic efforts to free himself, and struggled savagely to esc Ape from the toils; but he was powerless, and in a fow moments being taken into an ad? jacent house, was gently, yet securely bound hand aud foot and assigned quarters for the night, from which, however, ho was subse? quently liberated, but too late to do anything toward the recapture of the Colonel. Io an in? terview which the Colonel had with ono or two s oleo t frien?a j sat before his bold escape, be announoed bis intention and added: "I deep? ly regret my having to take this last step, but it is the only ono left me, and I conaidor that the outriges which have been heaped upon me by the United States authorities and their in? justice toward the Cu jan patriots justify the act." It is said that he left New York that night at the head of an expedition of more than one hundred and fifty men.7 - GHABLEST ON. MONDAY MORNING, JUNE 28, 1869. How to See rare Watte Immigration. Thors are two ohief reasons why it must be many years before the tide of white im? migration will flow to the South as it now flows to the North aud Weat; and these ros? sons are, (1) that Europeans have deep rooted pr?judices against the South; : and (2 ) that the European Immigrants naturally f allow their friends or acquaintances, not one in a thousand of whom had any idea of ooming to the Southern States. The preju? dice of whioh we have spoken oan only be removed by time and patience; but we may each day .do something towards giving our? selves a good reputation, and securing ad? vocates who will plead our oause across the broad Atlantic. While we need not expeot white immi? grants to oome to South Carolina by the thousand, they will still come in small num? bers-few and far between. These may be made the lever by whioh to overturn the barrier of falsehood and misrepresentation whioh now stands between us and the Ger man. vVish and English peoples. Each im? migrant who settles amongst us must bo made an apostle to teach the doctrino that in the South the white foreigner is, what the African oan never be made by any de? cree or statute-'the equal in every particular of the native born American. This oan be done by giving the new comer an active and not a passive welcome. Wo know that the immigrant will have equal protection and equal rights under the law; but this is not enough. A little personal attention, goes a long wey, end this attention it is wise to show to the man who comes to toil and work, not to steal or play the politician. Take the ease of a German or Irishman who buys or leases s farm in this State, and by so doing oasts his lot with oars. ! His interests sro then oar interests, and our interests sro his. He will bs as eager ss we are to preserve pesos snd quiet, snd fully as anxious to have sn honest, just snd eoonomiosl government, both State snd Federal. In living with ns he becomes s psrt of our system, ind he should hsve practical proofs that the accession of an? other white man to onr ranks is properly appreciated. Being s stranger, he requires i advice and sssistanoe, snd these should be given in no grudging spirit. This msy seem s trifle; bat we ssy that personal at? tention to the new oomer will do more than any books, pamphlets or resolutions, to per? suade him that he is the right msn in the right place. If he has any difficulty in proctor? ing stock, show him where it osn be hsd apon the best terms. If he heeds help in mauling timber sad fencing his land, give him that help freely and generously. If he Is ignorant of the peculiarities of our farm? ing system, give him sn the advice that he requires. Ia short, let him be treated as though hs hsd been born within the limits of the State. These things have not hitherto been con? sidered as seriously ss th?; dessrved; sot so much from s lack of generosity ss from carelessness sad want of thought - Now, however, we must eoiie apon every oppor tunity of strengthening our position; never forgetting that every white man from abroad who come? into the State, and is well oared for and made thoroughly st home, may be tho means of bringing here dozens of men like himself. As the letters describing the manner in whioh the immi? grant has been taken by the hand reach the English hamlet, the Irish county town or the villages of Northern Europe, they will bo read sad discussed by scores of hearty men sad women, sad when these in tara determine to immigrate, whore should they go bat to the State la which ons of their friends wsa received with open arms snd welcomed with every kindness that good feeling eoald suggest ? There is no theory ia this; it is a hard fact. , All theft wo desire osaaot be accom? plished in a meath or s year; bat we msy make every honest white man who settles la this Stat? tb? mesas of attracting here many others ss r-spss'ablo SK* ss diligent as himself. Thia we can do; and it is in sny event, worth while to prove by our ao tions that for tf? industrious immigrant there is not better sad happier home than osa be found fa the Palmetto stat e. A Munt who Me?no Baelmearu A ?Rhode leland" correspondent of the Courier is wroth because ont Columbia correspondent disclosed the faot that Sena? tor S prague intends to forfeit th? purchase of the Columbia oanal, and Tory properly suggested that when the oanal is parted with again, it be given "to a mab Who "means business." Rhode Island says, in reply, that "a manufacturer who at the "present time finds employment for over "4000 hands daily, oertainly is 'a man who " 'means business.' " Preoisoly; but he is not a man who moans business in South Carolina. The 4000 hands employed in other States will do us ho more good than Senator Spraguo will do the working classes of the country by defending and advocating proteotive tariffs. Both may put money in the pockets of New England; but neither will in any way be of benefit to this State. A Flank Movement. The Philadelphia North American takes the review of the crops of this State, pub? lished in Tua NBWS, as an evidence that large quantities of fertilizers have been uBcd ' this season with the most beneficial results, and that the planters are now spending their money in improving their maohinery and feeding their Un rf It there fore advises its readers to arrange their trade with the South on the basis of pro? duce, so as to avoid the use of ourrenoy, of which the South has not as much as she needs for home use. The planters, it says, can pay in produoe but a vt in cash, and the produoe is always convertible into Cash in the Northern markets. This would, doubt? less, bc an excellent arrangement for our friends in the great Quaker City, but it would be slightly injurious to Charleston.
