JOHN'S BAT. CELEBRATION' OT THE DAT BT THE MASONS i. AT MOUNT PLEASANT AND AT THE 8CHL7ET ZEN PLATZ. Address ot J. Somers Buist-Pres? station of a Gold-headed Cane, Sie., ?tc, TECS MASONS Of Charleston and Mount Pleasant celebrated yesterday-a day that has boen solemnized and commemorated aa a sacred era by the historical osages of Ancient. Free and Accept? ed Masons, and comes down to them hallowed by traditions vitally interesting to the Masonic and Christian world-at Mount Pleasant and at theSchuebzenpIatz, in a most delightful manner -in a spirit of the broadest fraternal kindness -in.a way calculated to reanimate the Masonic, virtues, tending to develope the sphere of its usefulness, and promotive of social happiness. MASONBT. lt has boan truly said that the dawning, of Masonry should be dated at the commence? ment bf recorded time, when the All-wise and Supreme Architect, in the beginning, created the stupendous fabric of the Universe, for the mighty handiwork of Nature, as spread out to the gaze of man, at once suggested asd illus? trated the first principles taught by the Order; the perfection and harmony of Nature, the fit? ness and symmetry of ail its parts are sought t J be represented by this institution. Eut the time of the organization of tba Order was twenty-eight hundred and seventy-seven years ago, when were laid the foundations of the Holy Temple, which was erected to Qod by King Solomon at Jerusalem. In the erection >f this building, which was foreshadowed by pro- ] pheoy, one hundred and eighty-three thousand VS hundred men were employed. Among snob i number, there was great disorder and no lystem whatever; to systematize and regulate ihe la nor3 of this vast multitude of workers; to ateas order and harmony and efficiency ID to heir work; to guard their lives against the langera and oaeualities incident thereto; to iresoribe a system of siens and tokens by ?hieb, the workmen might recognize and com nanioate with each other; to impose upon all he builders a oom mon obligation to admin Ls er to the wanta of each; to teach them the ir l and science of architecture, and to incal? ?ate the practice of Fidelity, Brotherly Love, ie lief and Troth, ..waa the present system of | freemasonry struck ont by King Solomon. Stnoe then tho Order baa prospered, moving apidly andover onwafd.despite the fluctuations | if human altara; and despite the black surges if hatred and malice and calumny that once i wept around it, ft B tanda like the venerable ii ty of Corinth, which stand upon, an inde I true tibie rook, between two oceans that hurl heir waters at hex feet hi vain. "Many a vanished year and age, -T? . And tarn oes t's ?roath and batt la's rago, .. - Have swept over Corin th ; yet sbe stands ? fortress formed to Freedom's hands The whirlwind's wrath, the earthquake's shock, Bave left untouched her hoary rock; The Landmark to the dobbie tide. The purpling rolls on either - aide. As if then waters chare to meet, . Tnt pauae and crouch beneath her feet" THE DAT. Bar ly yesterday, when preparations were nade for a etan to the pointe designated for he celebration, there was every appearance of rain. Thia did not deter any one from going, II looking for fairer weather; bal they were for j time doomed to disappointment. At h alf? as t nine it commenced to dazzle, and though ?stopped very soon, the clouds remained and lade many look as gloomy as the sky. How ver, at half-past ten all Nature smiled-the ?n broke through the bank of clouds, they aniahing rapidly before the god of day-and y eleven it was as bright and pleasant as any ne could wish, and every one ia happy : "June's glorious sun unclouded shines. And not a bud unopemd Lingers. The roses brash, and "mid their vines The golden petaled ?alantines _ .. Tangle their fragrant (Ingers." AT MO ONT PLEASANT. At a quarter past eight o'clock, the Wash ag ton Lodge, No. 5, in a body, marched to the larket wharf. Here tbey found assembled a arge i.umber of ladies, and delegations from he Grand Lodge, Orang a No. ll, Friendship io. 9, Union Kilwinning, No. 4, Strict Observ ocer No. 73, Solomon's, No. 1, Ancient Land lark, No. 76, Pythagorean, No. 21, Franklin, Io. 96rUo ion and Carolina Chapter? and others rom Charleston, and the Signet Chapter, from Io wherry, 'South Carolina. ' The orator of the lay, Dr. J. Somers Buist, is a member of the ? Bebington Lodge, and waa in line with them, imong the more prominent Masons present rare ? rai td Master Jamos Conner, and Bev. E. iiWagner, Past Grand Chaplain of the Grand jodge of Texas. By half-past eight all of those assembled rere on board the steamer Pocos in, of the ionnt Pleasant Ferry line, and a atari: was sade 6oon after. A- portion of Mailer's band ' rae present, and enlivened the trip with some xeelient selections. Approaching the wharf | ,t Mount Pleasant, the Etiwan Lodge, of that ?lace, was obaex?ed drawn np to receive their ?Ls i tors. Tho members were ia regalia, and ore BU barmera, respectively iaaribed : Faith lope, Charity, Strength, Wisdom, Beauty, rho boat rounded to at the wharf, the ladies nd children were disembarked, and the visit ag brethren passed through the linea of the Etiwan Lodge. Then came a brief address if welcome from the Mister of the Etiwan, B. T. Yenning, to which Grand Master James fenner .made as brief;!* reapo use-both being ppropriate. -> ? BM line was then formed ander Brother P. L Coburn, Grand Marshal, sad beaded by the ; .and, marched to the hall of the Etiwan Lodge. 1?re they entend. Aa we ara sot a member >f the "mystic tte," we cannot, of course, in? onu the public of what took plate therein, bat .n state the/ remained in there nearly two lours, after' which the Hos was again formed, md proceeded to HtUisrdw Grove, near the ]1 ibunt Pleasant House. Here an arbor had teen constructed, over the entrance of whieh I 1 ras the following inscription of welcome: "Eri- j ran Lodge. A. F. M., S. C. Welcome to the fraternity ot Charleston. June 24, 5869." 'endant from varions portions of the peaker's stand were repr?sentations of em lems of the Order, and the folio w.ng i n scrip ions : Brotherly Love-Morality-Friend hip. THE ORATION. Thc assemblage was called to order about alf-past ll o'clock by Grand Master James I 1 lonner, who, in a neat, bnet address, intro- j I need the orator of the day, Sr. James Somers luist, who then delivered the oration, of r hie li the following is a faint synopsis, its l tngth precluding publication. It was listened j D throughout with profound attention, and re eived, aa it deserved, the encomia ms of all resent;:_ lt The speaker began ty saying that they had | i sse m bled to celebrate a grand and a nb lime pooh-~one engraved apon the hearts of na? tone. The ample raso ure es from which his abject was arawa, made it impossible to Bay ?nything feat that which would folly interest, Dcbain tba attention, and amuse the fancy, 'he. ties that bind Masons together make! hem stand in a peculiar relation aa a body- 1 IOSSeasing rich treasure? accessible to all, and [ ndaed with the requisite virtue. Through countless ages this sublime body I 1 as passed unscathed, and to-day penetrates [ brough the remotest countries of the universe, Dundtd as it is m simplicity, in Truth, Charity | I ,nd purest Brotherly Love. In this age, when iew dogmas abound, with the allurements and opbiatries of a gilded moriaty, which threat en to undermine its excellencies, we gae with jealous care the principles and prece] of oar Order, requiring of ita votaries notbi beyond haman reach, knowing no distincti of sect, class or order, and only asks the pt formance of that which ehvates the mo; sense, calls into play the chaste and refin feelings, and implants into oar breasts tb divine precept, "Do unto others as you WOE they should da onto yon." When usurpation, linked with its coadjutoi Cruelty and Avarice, hounded on to perpetua an ignominious despotism; when Law and C der knew bat the behests of despotic will ai existed only in semblance, Liberty, which ' Masonry-hidden beneath the impenetrat clouds which concealed her beautiful form sought in association and anion a streng which, with Silence as its motto, and Hops e graved on its banners, started upon a pilgrir. age, which soon became a moral crusade, ti drew along a countless host of nations, sec and climes. The golden era of its intellect: ali ty then arose, and the first rays of its r splendent glory penetrated the gloom of Iga ranoe and Error, and dissipated the dark ps which overhang tbe world. Armed with i virtues, which constitute its strength, it is < necessity the mortal enemy of Fanaticism which persecutes, and arrays itself againi whatever is contrary to the laws of God. Man is made for man, ano by his natni prone to lean upon his kind in furtherance < all objects that affect him; hence, he feels tb necessity of this unity, which comente on Brotherhood, constituting strength and powfi which armed with virtue, are invincible, so tba cole or it mg as we do now apon this, the festi day of oar patron Saint, St. John the Baptist a brother having bat one common sentiment oonoeived at a lime vhen, ground to the dost matured and developed until, pheonix like, i sprang into refulgent light that permeate Christianity and Hu ked hand in hand with it sister and friend, now, like its great prototype paves the way for tbe dawn of that greatest o lights, which shall asher in fraternal teelingi among all mankind. It is with snob unity ai this which purchased and preserved tbe ?ber ties we now enjoy, and which has given to th? social compact euch solidity. Free Masonry does exolnde from its confines the presence and soft influen?as of woman, ye) we may consider the sex intelligent judges upon whose verdict it will, notwithstanding, rely for defence of its grand tenets. Free Masonry is philosophical ; it cultivates, the profound virtues, while it pursues its on? ward path as it accumulates in the rieh grana, ries of its progress the treasures of its never dying fame. Broad and deep to those who would penetrate the inner sanotaary, it teaches upon what reeta the world ; and by what in Bcrutible laws its fabric is governed. Jost as the first fruit apon the tree is evidence ot the solidity of the parent trank, so are all the vir? tues, of Masonry but ornaments and arguments to that philosophy which gives permanence and durability to its standing; without its philosophy. Charity sinks into a pale and insig? nificant light, and would seek some more (reniai bowers, whence, reclining in the soft luxuriance of a greater certainty, it ;ould be calm and content to remain. With such philosophy Masonry is calculated to break the bonds of entwining sophistry and ignorance. This philosophy, we are proud to jay, is tbe keystone in the arch from whose brilliant light emanate those rays that bring happiness to a benighted world. If obstacles ire mot with it is your buckler, and like a gran? ite promontory you will stand unmoved amidst the wild ravings of fanaticism, which surge around yon only to be hurled back amid their riatiaafoam. Its philosophy is the great base upon wbieh it rests, and as it rears its light to the freo and welcoming air, we turn onr eyes bo the beacon revolving in purity, and drink of ?he sweet waters that flow in an inexhaustible stream, making us a singular Order amongst men. Oar tie of Charity carries with it many rare ?nd invaluable virtues-it is the anion of all the virtues not of human origin; no human mind ever produced them ; they are living ema? nations from tbe fountain of universal good. It fells how it has spoken ia the soft whispers of the f ympatbetic soul; bow it has showered un? expectedly rich comforts to the dying and dis? tressed; bow it has dried the widow's tears, placen a joy where sorrow reigned; it founds hos? pitals and educational institutions, and finds a brother in the form of a foo, and sheds light upon the prisoner in his dungeon. It is the love of all mankind that erects the great temples from whose portals issue Brotherly Love, which makes each and every Mason feel, how? ever humbie his position in life, his worth and virtues, he has aplaoa in tho niobe of the rock of ages, whose fonndation is Love. Such principles as these will nev jr die; tbe fiery eua on its throne may grow dim; the sil? ver queen of night may wane; the besom's sweep of devastation may carry away all the greatness and glory of man, and entomb them in the irrelamiuable night of oblivion, bat these principles will never die, and will live as God is eternity. These great and vital prin? ciples that give it character and worth, spring from the ever-glowing fullness, and justly lay claim to the prerogative of eternity. They meet aggressive vice and overthrow it in battle. Lastly, brethren. Living in a country whose aegis ie Liberty, when tolerance to think and speak when one chooses has been somewhat curtailed, and when by the ead experiences of the late sectional strife we see all the finer feelings of life suborned, still the beaten star of its genios shone in the firmament from ont of the clouds-a guide to a common and finally dispensed Charity that knew no bounds; re? maining tra i to the eod, the only unbroken links tn the chain of man's bent valence. Mach remains for ns to do. We hold io oar beeping high destinies. Lek us kindly and properly apply oar wisdom, and ever remain living emblems of a trae and noble organiza? tion whose foundation is of God and in God. At the conclusion ot the oration, there was music by the band, after which General Coa? ler thanked tho audience for their kind atten? tion, and slated that Brothor Pickett would dis? miss them with tbo benediction, which was lone. The young people immediately repaired io a house near ' by, where, with music and lancing, with an interlude for dinner, thora mainder of tho day was spent mobt happily. There was not, so far as wa are aware, any formal dinner; most of the assemblage brought iheir dinners with tbem. having a delightful picnicing time of it after the regular morning exercises were concluded. The maj on ty ot ?be members of the Order and their frienda re urned at six o'clock, bat a large number re? mained to dance the hours away until the last rip of the Pocosin at ll o'clock. Including the Masonic fraternity, there participated m be exercises here yesterday fully six hundred persons, who seemed to enjoy tbe day amaz? ingly. Messrs. F. Gregorie, Geo. F. Kinloch and fohn G. DoPre, and others of the Committee ;f Arrangements, deserve great credit for the : meccas of this affair, which was, in a great < measure, doe to their energy, courtesy and 1 foresight. AT THE SCHUETZEMPLATZ, I rhe La Candeur Lodge, No. 36, and the Wal- I aalla Lodge, No. 66, had a most delightful picnic ' They arrived there on the cars shortly alter 1 ; wo o'clock. A portion of Muller's band was aere too, and discoursed excellent mus c, to < which merry hearts and twinkling feetk*pt i time until dinner, and after it too. The dinner was a sumptuous affair, and toast after toast went around the festive board; there was a jingling of glasses, sparkling of wit and champagne and general joyousness. Dorins; tho toasts, H. W. Sobroder, Grand Treasnrer of the Grand Lodge, said : Brethren-I feel highly gratified at tho op? portunity thus aff >rded me of expressing my high opinion of tho two Lodges which have met ibis aay to celebrate the anniversary of one of the two great patron* of Masonry. La Candeur Lodge is one of the oldest Lodges under our jurisdiction, fnr on the 24th Angust next, only two brief months, she will have been in existence for just seventy-three years, near? ly three-quart era of a century. During that period some of the most excellent men in our community bavo, through her means, been gathered into the masonic fold. Walhalla Lodge is, it u< true, a yonng mem? ber ot our order, for dating her inauguration in June, 1844, she bas now just paused her twenty-fifth year. But not less energetic and laborious bas she been than her elder sister. And when there was a probability that the charter of La Candeur Lodge might, from un? avoidable circumstances, expire, she generous? ly came forward, and, by reinforcements from her own body, revived its drooping energies and gave to it new life, so that now the mod? ern La Candeur mav almost be called the child of Walhalla. ? It is meet and proper that two Lodges, so closely united by historical circumstances, and by tte personal relations of their members, should join on Ihe same festive occasion, as they have often joined in the hours of labor. lu the Ancient and Accepted Bite, of which I have tho honor to be a member, there is a motto which I shall borrow, as exceedingly appropriate to the friendly union of these two Lodges. I propose the following sentiment: La Candeur and Walhalla Lodges-What Virtue unite?, De J th cannot ?eparate. PBE8ENTATION. About six o'clock Grand Secretary B. S. Bruns presented, in behalf of the two Lodges present, a gold-headed cane to Past Master Genera1 John A. Wagener, in so doing making a nice little speech. General Wagener was completely surprised, bnt soon recovered him? self and responded in a felicitous manner. Puring this pleasant occasion Mr. R. W. Sey? mour entertained tbe audience with a few re? marks. There were about four hundred persons at this picnic, whose beaming countenances ex? pressed more powerfully than words the happi? ness occasioned by the joyous events of the day, for which they were much indebted to the efficiency or the committee, Messrs. GIBARDEAU rs VIRGINIA.-The corres? pondent of the Bichmond Examiner, writing from Washington College, Lexington, Ya., (of which General Lee is President,) ander date of the 20th instant, says: The commencement exercises of our college began this morning, with the Baccsleureato sermon by Bev. John L. Girard eau, D. D., of South Carolina. This gentleman, a native of the City of Charleston, bas been for fifteen years the pastor of one' of the Presbyterian Churches there. Althongh comparatively a yoong man, his r?putation for ability and pul? pit eloquence is high and widespread. While pastor of a church of whites, he bas also, be? fore and since ibe war, labored zealously for tbVwelfare of the negroes, and bas had charge of a large congregation of them. Ibis congregation was in connection with the white church before the war; after its close the Yankees succeeded in enticing them away, bat Mr. Girardeaa's popularity is such that be has gathered them back to their former connection with the white church. Mr. Gi rar dc au served during the whole war as chaplain in the army of Northern Virginia, and was taken prisoner between Petersburg and Appomattox Court? house three days before the surrender of Gen eral Lee and army. We feel that wo do injustice to the dis? course iu giving fragmentary specimens of the reasoning used. It is en ou g h to say that every one was impressed and delighted with the sermon. FTETHE?
