BOBOLABT AMD ATTEMPTED RAPE,-At two o'clock dav before yesterday morning an able bodied negro'man catered a residence'In _street, and made his way to the apart? ments, where he robbed the clothing of the sleeping inmates of pocket books containing money. Not content with this crime, ho went to an adjoining room where a daughter of the gentleman, a young girl about fourteen years old, was sleeping, and attempted to gratify his hellish lusts. She screamed, whiob aroused her father, who instantly repaired to the scene, but before he could apprehend the fiend, he leaped from the second story window ! to a lot below and made his escape. Which threw the good cltiznae living ic thc vicinity of the "burnt distrust," on Broad street, in a peifeot fever of excitement, every one supposing that the cries proceeded from one who was being murdered. A number of gentleman rushed to the rescuo of the unfor? tunate f jmale, and found a colored man beat? ing bis wife. Ever; time he slapped ber she yelled. S. %BTtM, PEBSIDINO.-The following business was transacted yesterday: In the case of the United States vs. one hundred and sixty-nine packages of tobacco, found at Columbia, S. C., in possession of the South Carolina Railroad, the information was read and filed, and on motion of the United States District Attorney, it was ordered that a warrant of arrest and monition do issue as therein prayed, returnable on the first Monday in July next. In the case of Richard Arnold vs. the steam? ship Moneka, the Judge decreed th 3 collection of costs and damages, and ordered that an ex? ecution forthwith issue in furtherance of said dooroo against H. S. Lobby, Alexander R. Chisolm, and Edward Willis, stipulators, and John and Archibald Getty and Theodore D. Wagner, sureties on the appeal bond. CHEAP RATXBOAD TBAVBXLIMO.-H. T. Peake, Esq., the General Superintendent of the South Carolina Railroad, is now issuing "Green Line" certificates which entitle the bearer to travel at half fare, once each way, over the follow? ing named railroads: Louisville and Nashville, Memphis and Louisville, Nashville and North? western, Nashville and Chattanooga, Western and Atlantic, Selma, Borne and Dalton, Macon and. Western, Atlanta and West Point, Mont? gomery anl West Point, Georgia and South Carolina Railroads. This is done under an agreement entered into at the "Green Line" Convention, held at Atlanta in March last, and the "half fare" pri? vilege is extended to all persons travelling "for the purpose of soliciting business." The cost of travelling is in this way reduced one half, and our Charleston merchants may now, without great expense, extend their trips to all the most important points in the South west. We are glad to see this new movement. It is an indication that our railroads are bent on giving all the help they can to our people, who must do their part by working actively to extend their trade and make known the busi? ness advantages they are prepared to offer. These banks have done much toward mak? ing the colored people more thrifty, and have kept thousands from moral and pecuniary ruin by preventing, them from spending their h unl? earned money tn liquor and lotteries, the latter of which tends more (after liberty) than any other known cause toward thronging our streets with idle, worthless negroes. E. Calder residing with her father, Mr. E. C. Prince, al No. 1 Ann, near Elizabeth-street, was aroused by a light in her chamber, in which she, witt her two children, one an infant four monthi old, slept. She immediately jumped np am discovered that the bed was on fire, buruinf from the bottom. She gave the alarm, ant her father and brother, Mr. J. E. Prince, oam< to her assistance. They 'rescued the childrei from the flames, which, with some difficult] and after two beds were burnt, were extin guisbed. Mrs. Calder, ber brother aud father, were burnt about the hands and arms while rescu ing the children, both of whom were Beverel; barnt. One of them, Edwin Charles, abou three years of age," lingered in excruoiatini agony anti! seven o'clock yesterday afternoon when death put an end to his sufferings. At i hate hour last night no hopes of the recover' of the babe were entertained. The injurie sustained by the others were of a comparative ly trifling character, and they are now doini well. After the flames were extinguished, and th children attended to, an examination of th room was made. A kerosene oil lamp, whicl Mr. Prmee asserts, positively, at twelve o'oloc! when he retired, blew out and planed upon th mantelpiece, waa found under the bed. J was out, having, of c J ur so, been extingu?s he with the beds and bedding. The lamp wa touching the washboard ot the house, whic was partially burnr. The family have no suspicion of who the ii cendiary was, or what motive prompted him t this fiendish deed. The fiend must have gotte into the house in the early part'of the nigh wben all of the family were in the back portioi and concealed himself. How he got out is yt a mystery, as there is no trace to show whei he made his egress. Chief Engineer Nathai will give the matter a thorough inveatigatioi and will do all that can be done to bring tl perpetrator to justice. The shop next door to Mr. Prince's resideno kept by Mr. H.
