C. The Wilmington, N. C., Journal of Sunday, tne _uth instant, Bays: The steamship Mary Sanford, which went ashore on the rip at the western bar, several days since, has now become quite critical. Friday She wa? compelled to throw overboard a Binall portion of her cargo, and was subse? quently relieved of 200 barrels of rosin by the sloop Flash, of Smithville. Yesterday morning, a l-ek waa sprang, and the tug Alexander Old? ham commg to her relief, 160 barrels more of her cargo waa taken off and brought to this city. The vessel ls now in a critioal condition. She lays grounded on the rip about midship, and is leaking quite badly. The Oldham came np to the city yesterday afternoon for a steam pump, whioh was taken down to the Sanford last night. The steamer Governor Worth was also sent to ber assistance yesterday afternoon, and carried down'Mr. D. ?. Worth, the agent of tho line. Everything will be done for the relief of the Sanford, and all of the bargo re? learning win doubtless be saved. It is hoped adanto get the vessel off. The Mary Sanford has been employed on the route between Wilmington, N. C., and Mea: York.' ? . . . r ACQUITTAL ow LEGISLATORS.- The trial of' 'Richardson and Gray, members: el the Legis? lature, (both negroes) for the murder of Dallas Smith, itt Columbia, has been concluded, and their prompt acquittal by ; a jury of twelve ne? groes been declared, The tacts of thia mur? der bas been sifted on two occasions, the first of which at last term of court proving a mis? trial. The Phos nix remarks : Whether Rieb ard son waa guilty or not, we hold that the negro jury who decided the issue was utterly and thoroughly unfit to pro? nounce in judgment. We do not touoh tho conduct of the case, the management of the attorneys pr the Charge of the judge; we sim? ply assert and maintain that m such a grave and solemn issue, involving intricate details of law and evidence, caUing forth the moat deli? cate exercise of nico and accurate judgment, with the sign posts of the previous trial before them .that the provision of a negro jury to retry this oaae pointed clearly to the nature of the verdict. In any event, the empanelling of auch a jury was disastrous to the cause of jus tics and the truthful investigation of a: great crime.
