The Sunday school pupils of the above Church, with their Superintendent, Mr. John G.' Mil nor, teachers and friends, repaired to Payne's farm yesterday afternoon, to continue their annual celebration began in the church on last Sunday. Mr. William S. Henerey was mister of ceremonies, at the corner of Line and Meeting-streets, where he saw -the little ones safe in Graham's Omnibusses, in which they were comfortably conveyed to the pleas ore ground? Here the committee, consisting of Messrs. William G. Whilden, chairman, Zim? merman Davi?, H. B. Olney, A. J. Salinas, J, E. Bork, George W. McKee ver and A. Prince, and Miss Olney, Mrs. Stocker, Mrs. 8teedman, Mrs. Shepherd, and Mrs E. H. Jackson, and Misses Whilden, Heriot, Shepherd and .rodie, were in attendance to arrange mattera. While the preliminaries for dinner were being arranged, the children played games, rambled in the woods, Ac. 8everal paper balloons, six, eight, and fifteen feet high, made for the ocoassion by Mr. B. M. Alex? ander, were sent up by him, and were eagerly watohed until they floated oat of sight. The dinner bell ran?, and the teachers and scholars assembled in front of the boose and thea marched to the tables well supplied with good things, of which they bountifully partook. While there, Rev. Tile Spring-street ci? ure h and Northern Methodist Preachers. TO THE EDITOR 0*7 THE NEWS. Daring my late absence from the city, there appeared io yoar journal T. W. Lewis and A. Webster, denying the statement of my circular, that their church obtained and held Spring streef Church and the McKee estate by mili? tary authority. Their communication weare on ita faoe tho expression ot injured innocence, and the holy purposes ol ambassadois of peace and truth. They say they hold not by the military, bot by tender to bim (Lewis,) by a vote taken at a "largely attended and duly notified public meeting." Shades of Blackstone! and Mar ? shall I Titles to property by "vote of public < meeting I" What will oar learned bar say to this mode of getting titles to property ? They have usually called fur "signing, sealing and delivering,7*by "trustees," of choren property. The bayonet is the only other mode, unless these men propose "spirit rapping." The trastees of my church say there never was a meeting of their board for the purpose of giving their consent, and that consent was never asked or given for Mr. Lewis or Mr. Webster to use their church. Mr. W. published in bis own paper the fact that he knew the ase of trastees; for he says, the "trastees" of my church "rented" it to the "bogus*' "rickety" "chaos'of the "Confed? eracy," and it promised to repair; "but like the test of its promises, it never fulfilled." Tbe troth of this, or t he want of that virtue, is pt oven by the workmen, who say the Con? federacy paid for the replacement of the roof and other repairs. The abusive teims he uses only give illustration to their cry for "sectional aaa national peace." He had better learn it from C. i. Chase, wbo presides over the temple of strife (the Courthouse) in his noble speech over the graves ot the Confederate and Federal dead at Magnolia. This Northern church makes its own commentary on its Jove of troth and peace. There is no plea of ignorance for its crimes against both. Did they get one church by military power ? My friends in the country, for whom I write, were deprived of the city papers till tbe war closed, do not know the faetB, which every in? telligent man in the city knows, for they reid the biston- in the daily papers. To the point before us. Not holding by the "trustees," did these Northern preachers pos? sess and keep by the '-bayonet." The first person Mr. Lewis called noon after arri vin tr in Charleston was Dr. G. S. P., then living in No. 117 Coming-street. He says Mr. Lewis produced aa "order from the War De? partment for him to seize all churches with? out pastora," Ae., Ac,, which he (Mr. Lewis) regretted to do. A friend hands me thia from the Charleston Conner, of dato of June 1, 1865: "I hold in trust for their ase (the colored people) the three churches they occupy, by an order from the War Department, and nave served them as pastor for nearly three months, and propose to oontinue amongst them. (8igned) T. W. LEWIS." Nearly three months before that, there is an advertisement in the same paper, dato of March ll. 1865, where he asserts the same re? sponsibility. The above agrees with the spirit and temper of their church. The Secretary of War eives the following order of date November 80,1863: "That all the houses of worship belonging to the M. E. Church South, in which a loyal min? ister, who has been appointed by a lo>al bish? op, does not now officiate, are hereby placed at tbe disposal of Rev. Bishop Ames," (Northern bishop.) My Church came nuder that description. Mr. Lewis says in his notice atovu that he held by order of the War Department. There is now before me a military order da? ted November 18, 1867, refusing to give ns back oar church, and refers to a former act by which we were deprived of it. These men, with seeming injured innocence, should ask with Donna Julia : "Antonia, where's my pocket handkerchief ?" As to the McKee estate, tbey deny the "bay? onet" as depri vi nz us of it by a special plead? ing disgusting to those who know the shifts taken before tbe provost court in this city, which the citizens never can forget, to deprive as of it. Our church carried the decision of the first military court, by appeal, to tbe higher bayonet authority, bat the bayonet gave it to them. Rev. L. C. Loyal, a more truthful mao the city cannot furaisb, tells mo that, in pur? chasing back Spring-street Church from Mr. Lewis, the military trustee, Mr. Lewis requir? ed, at first, besides the money, titles to the McGee estate and also to old Bethel from our church. ? Our friends in the country should know that when Mr. Lewis was sworn in the trial of the above case, he said, on oath, that be had "fulfil 1 ed his promises to our church." Old Brother B., to whom with others Mr. Lewis, with tears in his eyes, when he first came to the city trying to get the members to be reconciled to his min- j i s try. saying he only came to "try to save their souls," and that when the Southern preachers returned he "would give ap the property and members to them." when be was sworn as above, Brother B. said aloud, "That is a-." la the d?cision of the Supreme Court (16 vol., Howard's Reports, Smith TS. S Wormstedt) the 00ort with perfect unanimity decided that I the "plan of separation" wis tho foundation of their decision in favor of otu church. It said the "plan" was of "binding force." Let every one read this "plan," and be cannot donbt bnl that it covers all such cases as the McKee estate. They say of the colored people, as they Mt ns, ' that they were very respectable and law abiding." Trae, "one grain of wheat in mil? lions of chaff." Why should they be led off from those fountains of "respectability" now opened for them ? I fear they liavo lost ground since. I hope the colored people will not for? get the lessons Uu#ht them by us in their new fellowship. I have done with these men. Thor attacked my circular three times, first, personally; se? cond, in their own paper of May 19; then in yonrs of 29th ult. I now dismiss them. They may cry "peace" as they stir up strife, speak of "respectability" as they degrade, profess honesty as Iago, and boast their church weilth as Butler can ot spoons, as much as they please for me. The above I deem due to the appeal which I mide in behalf of my dilapidated church, that these mea should not prejudice the object of Christian benevolence by putting my church in a false position.
