EXPLOSIVE OILS.-Professor Chandler,' 'tile Analytical Chemist of tba Metropolitan Board of Health, recently tested several specimens of so-called kerosene oil, which were parchas- j ed at varions stores in New York Cjty. Of s'ev. anteen samples not one waa of the standard quality,' and many were "highly dangerous." Seven of the number were not kerosene oil at all, bat benzine or naptha, - "the most danger? ous pOTtlSn' of the natural petroleum." Ac? cording to Professor Chandler it is impossible by any means to render benzine, gasoline and naptha non-explosive. He has no rat tb in "pa? tent safety lamps." Charleston, hading the public welfare at heart, and not desiring office or emoluments, bare kindly consented to gire frequent public ex? hibitions, equal to any 'rapedy, comedy or farce; but se the area of. the Council Chamber ia limited, and in hot weather might be pun? gent and disagreeable to sensitive noses, we suggest the following as an additional and im? perative rule for the future government of this august and dignified body : RULE -Hereafter all meetings of this Council shall be held on the Citadel Green, wheres pavilion will be erected by the good and loyal taxpayers, sufficiently spacious to admit all lovers ef fan to <a<* intellectual entertainments; and that aa adjuncts thereto, there will be t .'prize ring" and "shooting eallery," and if the foolish "taxpayers" will only pay promptly, the amount intended to be assessed, there will be furnished a "grab bag," in which there are to be at least twelve prizes and no blanks.
