THE NEW HOTEL in Columbia was opened on the 27tU inst., at 6 P. M., having filled its fifty five chambers with one hundred and thirty visitors. The .Oranitoviile delegation to the Agricultural Con? vention gave a hop in the house on the open? ing evening, which was quite a success, over one hundred persons being present. SOUTH CAROLINA AGRIGULTURAL MAGAZINE. The State Agricultural Society bas endorsed, as its official organ, an agricultural monthly magazine, to be published by Messrs. Walker, Evans A Cogswell, of Charleston. The first number ot the magazine will appe&r about the first of August, and the name of the publishers is a sufficient guarantee that this ioug-felt want of South Carolina is about to be well sup? plied._ THE UNION BANK.-By the official announce meut, which we publish to day, it will bs seen that the Union Bank has been authorized by the State Government to resume its business, and will soon open its doors as a bank of dis? count and deposit. The high character which this bank always [enjoyed before the war has been fully sustained by the circumstance, that it alone, of similar institution io this State, has been enabled to recommence business. Every addition to our banking facilities at this time is a marked public benefit, and President Smith deserves oredit for the energy and prudence he has displayed in managing the affairs of the institution._ . DEPARTURE OF THE VISITING FIREMEN.-The Washingtons, or Augusta, left yesterday morn? ing, and were escorted with music to the depot by their entertainers, the Germans, who had presented them with a pictare of their engine boase. The case of the steamer Oriental against the brigantine Pye was beard, and appraisers ap? pointed by tho court to appraise tho value of the Pye and cargo, and make a return to tao court, and specify whether the value ison tho basis of gold or currency, with or without cus? tomhouse duties paid or not. In (he Bankrupt Court, a number of petitions for final discharge were referred. Thomas L. Cuthbert ind Daniel T. Complow were finally discharged in bankruptcy. In the Circuit Court, the following verdicts were rendered : Phelps, Bliss & Co., of New York, against Danner, Bell & Co., of South Car? olina-$2,198 87 for plaintiffs. D. M. Lawton, of Georgia, against William M. Lawton and George G. Martin-$691 15 for plaintiff. Mary C. Goss against Frauk Goss-$7,174 40 for plaintiff. The Issue and Enquiry dockets will be called to-day at ll o'clock. ANNUAL PICNIC OF THE OBPHAN HOUSE. Regularly eaoh spring, the children of the Charleston Orphan House, an institution that cannot be excelled in ita management and dis? cipline, are treated to a pionio in Che woods, where they spend a day in such innocent an i suitable pastimes"- as the Board of Com? missioners may direct. The occasion is always looked for with the greatest in? terest ou the part of the ohildren and their friends. At an early hour yesterday morning the orphans wore up early, with their minds full of the event, and formed in line, three hundred in number, headed by the prin? cipal and teachers, and marched to the North? eastern Railroad depot, where they took the cars at 8 o'clook, accompanied by the Board of Commissioners and other invited guests, and were soon on the way to the farm of their old friend, Philip J. Poroher, Esq., who for several years post has welcomed the children to his rustic home. When they had reached the farm they bogan to cast about for the best method of enjoying the occasion. The boys we-t romping in one direction, while the girls sought wild flowers and shady seats be? neath the venerable oaks. During the day a. visit was made to the old Goose creek Church, nearly two hundred years old. In the church tho ohildren, led by tho teachers, sung some touching and beautiful hymns, after which they again betook them? selves to the wild woods f jr enjoyment. When dinner was ready, the little band attacked thc edibles with spirit, after a blessing by the Rev. Jno. H. Honour. Afcer dinner, James Ingham, a pupil of the institution, stepped forward and delivered iu creditable style the following ad? dress : l&spected Friend -After weeks of anxious expectancy, again are we assembled beneath the Bhelterof these venerable oaks. In inno? cent amusements and healthful sports have swiftly sped the hours of our vernal festival. Yon weary sun, in his descent towards the horizon, reminds us that the hour of our de? parture is at hand, when we must bid farewell to these familiir scenes, and to you, sir, our generous host and friend. Aa oa?h y?ar, kind sir, we look forward to this eventful day-as we recall the happy memories of the past, and in childish fancies picture the glowing future, there is a name linked with all, and lisped,, in gratitude, even by the youngest of our youth? ful band. Mr. Poroher responded feelingly, and aastu ed the children of a hearty welcome. He toll them that aa long as he lived they should en joy the vernal season on his farm. The incident of the day, however, was th presentation to the principal, Miss Agnes B Irving, under whoso marageiuent tho genera economy pf the institution has given thb great est satisfaction to the Board.
