The young ma rooners have our best wishes. AM?SEMENTS.-Hibernian Hall last night was again "a banquet hal) deserted," and we be? lieve there is more truth than poetry in the current rumor that thc German Opera Com? pany, which 'ed Southward under the man? agement-or mismanagement-of Herr Grau with so grand a flourish of trumpets, has col? lapsed, and need not bc expected to till any part of its engagement here or in tho other Southern cities. We shall probably be without amusements until Monday next, when Whit? man i3 to return from Savannah with his spe: tacnlar company, including the popular sfar, Mies Jennie Kimball. THE SHIP PACIFIC AND THE RUN XE KS.-It seems that tho captain of this ship, unable to ?To'tain a crew here on such terms as he thought reasonable, sent North for the neces? sary compliment of tara. When they arrived they took i? into their heads that they would not go aboard, but being told that they must, and given as an alternative a doao of "arm lots," they yielded. The runners, we under? stand, have been exceeding wroth at the course of thc captain, and, report says, have been using their influence to embarrass him. It was found necessary to put an officer aboard the vessel night before last, and nhen the run? ners shot around the Pacific in their small craft they were warned off, but had to be fired into before they could be got rid off. The wri? ter, whoevtr he mir be, knows as little of Charleston as he does ot the spirit of the Co? lumbia firemen, and is evidently oblivious of the distinction between confidence and brass, flippancy and sense : Tho more wo read in our Charleston ex chances of (ht excitement caused in our good old "City By th? Sea" by the preliminary exer? cises of the Fire Department, the inore ice are amused at the idea of die Charleston boys beat? ing our Palmettoes. who are to bo their guests on tbat occasion. "Drift? wood" and "'Literature and Art" arc also ex? cellent. Tho editor's "Nebulae" are, as usual, sprightly and entertaining. On the whole the Galaxy for May is tully calculated to retain the good opinion of the reading public.
