DUST AND RAIN.-There was a slight fall ot
rain yesterday, which laid tho dust in the
streets, much to the joy of those who have had
to encounter its blinding clouds. Considerable
rain is yet wanted to fill the cist erns, which
aro generally empty.
FIREMAN'S FAIR.-Tho ladies of Sumter in?
tend giving a fair about tho 31 of May for the
benong of the firo department of that town,
which has just been thoroughly organized, and
which bas purchased a IHW engine. The fair
promises to be quite a su sc eas.

strengthened since its last visit io Charleston,
opens to-night at Hibernian Hall. The opera
chosen for the occasion is Faust, always a fa?
vorite with tho Charleston public. Reserved
seats may bo bad this morning at Holmes'
book house._
ROBBERY OF TOBACCO.-Mr. Meyers, who
keeps a stora in Calboun-3treel, on or about
the 1st of April lost a quantity of leaf tobacco
from his establishment. ' Suspicion having
pointed strongly to Edward Middleton, colored,
he was arrested yesterday by Officers Beed and
Nipson, and is now held ou the charge for ex?
amination. _
THE CHESTER Soc.-A fine spocimou of this
breed of bogs passed through the city yester?
day tor Mr. William Knox, of Selma, Ala.
The porker iu question was weighty and of |
good size. Quite a number of this breed have
passed through our city of late, indicating that
some attention is being given to this branch
of stock-raising.
THE STATE LAND COOMISSIONES.-Mr. ?C. P.

be addressed to C. P. Leslie, Land Commis
siccer, Columbia, S. C.
ROSIN.-Il was reported a few days since
that a sale of rosin bad been made in this city
at $9, "?he highest price since the war." This
is a mistake, as rosin bas been sold in th 's
market at $12 per oarrel ot two hundred and
eighty pounds. Charleston is a-? good a mar?
ket for naval stores as any in thc country, and
as good prices can be bad as at any otb er point.
Indeed, low gradee of rosin have, wiibin the
last four mouths, boen shipped from Wilming?
ton to Charleston for sale.
BAUTE.-A fresh supply of the ioots of this
new textile has been received in this city, and
Mr. B. J. Pearce advertises them for sale in ano?
ther column of to-day's NEWS. We confidently
hope to tee the ramie soon occupy its deserv?
edly important position as one of the staple
productions of the South. The simplicity of |
its cult ore, the certainty of thc crop, and high
prices offered for the product, will, we think,
induce many of our planters and farmers to en?
gage in its cultivation.
