A Columbia correspondent of the New York Tribune says: "Tho official mortuary reports of the City of Charleston gives us 1208 as the number of deaths .during 1868. Of these 1208 there were 818 colored and 390 white. Now, as the population of the city (40,000) is about evenly divido 1-half white and half col ired-it appears that the deaths are over four per cent, a year of the colored race, while of the white it U les3 than two per cent. More exactly, ono colored perso o in every twenty-four dies yearly; while ol the whites, only one in every fifty-one dioa yevly. AN INTERESTING QUESTION was argued in the United Slates Court yesterday, in the matter cf A. T. Stewart b Co. vs. L. Drucker. It arose upon tho re? turn of A. T. Stewart ic Co., to a mle to show cause why iurther proceedings should not be stayed until the question of discharge of the bankrupt was deter? mined. It was contended by Messrs. Pressloy, Lord & Ingiesby, counst. for Messrs. Stewart A Co., Ihat inasmuch as a discharge might bo no rclcasr of their debt, they had the right to go and provo such tacts. M-. Asher D. Cohen, counsel for Mr. L. Drucker, argued that whether tho dis charlo released the debt or not, their claim was provable, and all action thereon must be stayed until discharge was or was not granted. After that had been decided, whether their debt was discharged or not cou'd come up when the case was regularly called. The judgment of the conrt was reserved. LA GRANDE DUCHESSE.-Odenbachs famous Opera Bou ffr. was performed last night at thc Hiber? nian Hall, by Whitman'* company, and went off very well. Mr. Pike as Frits played and sang with spirit, and Mrs. Taylor as Prince Paul made thc best of a part which depends altogot horror its success on the peculiar humor of the actor. Mr. Taylor as Bourn was as grand a roysterer ns over. He is a fine burlesque actor. Miss Kimball as La Grande Duckett* sang and acted charmingly and without any suggestion of tho coarseness of which Toolee appearod to bo so fond.
