CARPENTER, PBJtaxorsTO.-In the Common Pleat.-On Saturday tbo Jury oharged with the case of Mayne va. the Insur? ance and Tru 4 Company of Charleston, having failed to agree upon a verdict, were di? hargo l under the recent act of the Legislature. No other causes of public Interest were heard. PAYMENT OF INTEREST.-The January, 1869, interest on the first mortgage and guaranteed debt of the Greenville and Columbia Railroad Company, will be paid at the Columbia office on and after the 8th Instant, provided that the holders of the bonds will fund all interest accrued up to July 1,1868, in guaranteed bonds of the company. ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE.-A very unfortunate character In thia city, well known as Major Pickling trie 1 to commit suiaide by drowning himself in At? lantic dock on Saturday. His movements were ob? served by gentlemen nearby, who sucoerded in frus? trating his purposes. He was evidently und r the influence of a melancholy superinduced by distress and poverty. CONFIRMATION AT THE OATHEDBAL CHAPEL. Yesterday morning ninety-seven young nelsons were confirmed at the Cathedral Chapel, Queen -street Seventy one young ladies marched from the Academy of the Sisters to the church, where Bishop Persioo addressed them prior to administering the sacrament. Tn tho evening there waa a renewal of baptismal vows, when the Bishop again addrt-sred the children. PROJECT TO REBUILD THE INSTITUTE HALL. An Informal meeting of several of the directors of the Agricultural Institute was held at the Charleston Hotel on .Saturday evening, for tbo purpose of arriv? ing at some conclusion in reference to the rebuild? ing of the Institute Hall. It re^ms there is a mort gage on the lot (the old theatre site) of fifteen thous? and dollars, held by the. city, and an effort will be made at the next meeting of Connell to have the lien waived, in order to facilitate the project. If this movement o an be carried out, it ia thought tbo Board of Trade may be induced to combine with the Insti? tute and looate in tho new building the reading-room they have in view.
