Bryan, Esq., was heard for the libellant, and Ihomas Y. Simons, Esq., for the respondent. COLORED PASSENGERS ON STEAMSHIP LINES. In New York, on 1 hursday, in the case of Louisa -Jacobi again-t tte Atlantic Navigation Company, in which the plaintiff (colored ) claimed damages for be? ing refused first-class passage on a steamer to Savan? nah after purchasing a first-class ticket, the jury were unable to agree, two standing out for the de? fendants, and were discharged. "HE TELEGRAPH O F F I C E.-Tho inconve? nience of not having any telegraph offico in thc principal business portion of tho city is dally felt and hourly complained of. 7 .ere are many reasons, it is true, why there nh -nid be a telegraph office just ?where there is one at present, but there are many more, as all business men will acknowledge, why there should be at least a branch office down town. THE LATEST CUBE FOB LOVE.-The female principal of a young lady's seminary in London cures the innumerable cases of "falling in love" that occur among her pupils, with clcse confinement and doses of senna tea. She says the toa never rads. Sometimes the girl gives in after a fow doses, but usually it takes two or three days, and m ono case ehe was a whole week effectirg a cure. For a school girl's "cab love," she declares lhere is nothing like senna tea. MAGNOLIA CEMETERY.-The fino spring wea? ther is causing crowd$ of visitors to repair to Mag? nolia, to view the quiet and picturesque scenery of that beaut ?ful abode of the dead, or to care for the earthly resting place of so mo departed loved one. The haK-hourly line of omnibuses, just established, connecting the city with the cemetery, is a great convenience, and will, os soon as its advantages be? come generally known, saoet with liberal support. Tho proprietor, Mr. Graham, has eur thanks for kind attention?. AocroENT TO A GEORGETOWN TUG.-Tho steam tug J. B. staples, while towing up the Wac camaw Hirer, near Buck's Mills, OB the 10th instant, was discovered to be on fire below decks. The tow was Immediately cut adrift, and iho boat run ashore, when every exertion was made to buppress the fi?mes. The upper works, houses, decks, kc, were consumed, and machinery badly damaged. Great credit is due Captain Springs and his crew, who, with the assistance sent them from Buck's Mills, saved his boat from entire deitrnctien. The J. R. Staples was formerly owaed at Norfolk, Virginia, but fer the last eighteen months has been ?wnei and used at Georgetown, South Carolina, and is partially insured. Tho damage will be speedily repaired, and the tug soon at work again. "Nobody hurt" THE SPECTACULAR DRAMA seems almost as popular at the South a9 in the North. M.maser Whitman's company closed avery successful engage? ment of two weeks ia Savannah on Saturday last. A complimentary benefit given to Mr. Whitman by the leading citizens on Friday night drew an over? whelming audience, and the style in which the fairy pieces, CindertUa and Undine, wete brought out a la Opera Bouffe is highly praised by the papers of our Bister city. It was hoped that these a 11 rac nv? plays would have bad a run of a fortnight in Charleston; but the pre-engagement of Hibernian Hall renders lt impossible, and the company will tppeir h-ro on two evenings only-to-night and to-mortow night. Cin? derella will be given this even im. It is described as a light and sparkling medley of song, wit. acting ind admirable scenic effects. The piece is interspersed with ballet interIndes in which the graceful star. Mlle. Dlani, will appear, supported by tho Parisian corps de ballet, and closes with the beautiful trans? formation scene. Undine is on tho bills for to-mor? row night. Seats can be engaged lor either night at Holmes' book store. On Wednesday morning th ? company departa for ihe North. THE KRAKEN REDIVTVTJS.-Cap' "n Perry, of the buoy tender Maggie, which arri\ . at this port on Saturday morning, repor s that about len days ago, while off St. Simon's Bay, on thc coast of Geor? gia, he fell in with a dead monster of the deep float? ing on tho surface. The carcass stood fifteen tect out of water, and was about thirty feet long by twenty wide, with an alligator shaped head attached to the body by a n < ck about fifteen feet in length. As weU as could be judged, tho creature was shaped like a tortoise, and had beeu dead for some time, as the atmosph?re was tainted with tin* smoU. Captain Porry sail<xl within five ieet of tho carcass, and would have taken it in tow but a galo was rising and ho was anxious to mak- an offing. The captain, who is an old vhaler, says that he hus never seen such a sight, and judges that the unknown creature most have been one of the oldest inhabitants of the briny deep, as the corrugations on ils back shooed that it hid attained an advance! age. ho "strange fish" was subsequently seen by several cf the pilots and the lighthouse koepor of SI. Simon's, who all corrobo? rate Captain Perry's statement When last s eu the body was drifting toward laud, wh*-re it will proba? bly r?foain and luraish phosphates for future gene? rations. INSPECTOR OF GUANO.-Tho communication of Professor C. 0. shepard to Governor Scott, on the subjec: of appniutiug au inspector ol fertilizers, has naturally directed tho attention cf thc public to this important matter. It is self-evident that the planters and farmers of thc country are liable to great imposition in having worthless mixtures or adulterated guin^ pa-scJ off on them as valuable manures, and that it is thc duty of the Stats, as far as practicaje, to prefect them from such swindles. If, then, it wore possible to cet a good man as in? spector of yuan i or fertilizer*, and every ton sod could be mide to pass under his inspection, a great public good would be accomplished, which would more than compensate tor the high salaiy which such I such a man would undoubtedly demand. Thc ucr tiflcato of such an officer wou'd bc the only guar? antee that the purchaser u^ed have that he was get? ting a good article. Dut If the officq should bo filled, as most of the State offices aro, with a man who would look only to plunder, tho thing had bettor be left alone, and planters sud farmers left as now to find their only security iu dealiug with respoi albie houses. Charleston manufacturers of fertilizers, and Charleston merchants nf sta:.ding, who are agents for manures, havo too much at st ike to sell a bad article, and their bill of sale is as good as any inspec? tor's certificate. The chief uso of m inspector would bc to protect the regular business men a* well as the planters from sharpers, and that would not bo ef fecC& if the inspector was himself a sharper. Cuan MAKERS val! notice something to their advantage under bead of "wants." MASONIC TESTIMONIALS.-At a recent meet? ing cf LaOandtur Lottie. No. 36, A. F.
