GENERAL GONZALES.-We learn from a private letter thai; (Jen -.ral Gonzales, whose arrest and con? finement in Moro Oastlo within fifteen minutes after his arrival at Havana was erroneously reported a week or two ago, wsa treated with courtesy and even kindness by General Dulce, and has not been in any way interfered with by the authorities. No person from tho steamship was allowed to land until Gen? eral Dulce had been perso i ally Informed of tho ob? ject of General Gonzales' return to Cuba. Beyond i this G.mer;il Gonzales suffered neither inconvenience nor confinement. . A NUISANCE.-Meoting-stroofc was blocked np for more than an hour yesterday afternoon by the orowd which assembled to see Bond, the tight rope walker, put his neck in Jeopardy. If the "greatest good of the ereatest number" is to prevail, and we must put up with this public anuoyance, we may at least ask that the President or the Street Rail ~Way Company will not airain allow his cars to be stopped for an hour to sec a tight ropo performance. It is stated that the legal advisor of Mr. Pillsbury baa cautioned relioenoe and a prohibition of the publication of con? templated action; yet, no'.withstanding this inter? diction, tho public will be correctly informed through the ingenuity of the ubiquitous press. A DAY OF SENSATIONS-GBEAT EXCITEMENT IMMENSE CBOWDS-HANLON krna BOND -The oldest inhabitant can scarcely recollect a greater manifes? tation of excitement on the streets of Charleston than'that which occurred yesterday. The causes were Banlon and Bond. Fox months past the public curiosity on the subject of velocipedes has been gradually increasing. Mr. Duo's invention, and bis Sunday twinkling through tho streets, intensified the general interest, and Hanlon's huge posters, with plctor'al illustrations of a velocipede race, wrought the excitement up to the highest pitch, ready to break out in any absurditj at ths slightest oppor? tunity. The opportunity was not long wanting. An authorize! notice nppeared in THE NEWS of yester? day morning stating that one of the Hanlons wou'd start with his velocipede at tho the corner of Queen and Stats-streets at twelve M. and give the business men of East Bay and Broad-street the first op? portunity of seeing the new mechanical horse. Long before the appointed hour peiple gathered in crowds in the neighborhood of the designa? ted starting point and along the proposed rento, and also on Meeting and King streets. They waited long and patiently-1. e., however impatient many of them were, they showed no signs of it. People within view af the corner of State and Queen streets were still gazing intently but wearily on that inter? esting locality, when oil at once the cry was raised that the velocipede had gone up Meeting-street, and the more infatuated portion of the crowd started in that direction at a run. They were, ot course, too late. Cn reaching Meetiag-slreet, they found them? selves among the stragglers at the tail-end of the crowd running np the street, and seeming to grow denser as it was more distant They were told that the velocipedes had gone up to the Washington Hace Course for a regular run-best three heats in five. They took the cars or increased their speed on foot, hoping to bain before the end of the fun; but when they reached the corner of Hisel aud Meeting streets, they saw a smell crowd gathered at the door ef the Pavilion Hotel, and were informed that the Hanlons had been up to the shell road, takea a run up and down, come back, and gone into the Pavilion to take a drink. Somebody bad been badly sold. So much for excitement numbar one. Excite? ment nnmber two was equally as great, but in it no? body was disappointed. All saw as much ss or more than they expected to see. The account of Bond's walking on Saturday from the top of the Pavilion Hotel to the top of the store of Messrs. Strauss, Vance & Co. on a light rope hid spread through the eily like wild fire, and the announce? ment that he would perform the same fast yesterday at three P. M. drew a crowd of not less than five thousand persons to seo him. Meeting and Hasel streets wore both bloca ed for a c.onald?r.ihiA tba tance each way for more than an hour, and the p az za ot tho Charleston Hotel, the veranda of the Pavil? ion Hotel aud the windows and roofs i f the neigh? boring houses were filled 'with tpeotators. Bond performed the feat several times with complete enc coes. At a beight of fifty feet over a paved street he performed all the manouvres usually performed by tight lope tancera in a circus at a height ot eight or ten feet over a bed of sawdust Be ant down and got up again, turned somorsots over the wire, bal? anced himself on his back, slipped down and caught with his leg?, and did BO many wonderful things, th st to say he stoo l on his head in mid air would scarcely be an exaggeration. He concluded his performance by walking across on tao rope dressed m a long calico dress, supposed to represent the Greoian Bend, but in reality bearing a very dis? tant resemblance to that striking costume. One was rather reminded or the o d nursery lhyme, " Whither old worn in V Whither so high t m To sweep the oooweos from the sky I" In the intervals between his performances Bond would walk around among the crowd and take up a collection, and he no doubt made a good deal o? money by his exhibition.
