COLOR??B LAWYER.-lu the Court of Common
Ploas at Columbia, on Monday, Representative
Whipper, a colored lawyer, appeared for Peggy Bel?
ton, colored, charged with assault and battery upon
a lady. This, we believe, is the first appearance of a
colored lawyer in th.' courts ef this State. Colored
lawyers, however, practic-j in ibo United States Su?
preme Court, and in tho courts of Boveral Northern
States.
ARREST OF HIGHWAYMAN AND ROBBERS.
Yesterday George Godfrey nnrl-Liegley, colored,
were arrested by Magistrate Buoch, on tho charge
of being tho principals in the murderous assault
made on Mr. Tennent in Cannon-street on Monday
nihill last. Binaley was committed to jail, and Good
freywas put und'r ben 's to answer the charge.
The other parties couneclt d with the affair will soon
be arrested, when tho ouiiag>! will be properly inves?
tigated .
THE STEAMSHIP PROMETHEUS.-Tho very im?
portant trade between this port and Philadelphia re?
quires the best facilities which can bo given to lt,
and wo aro pleased to notice that Messrs. Jno. &
Iheo. Getty have tho steamship Prometheus now
regularly employed in this service. This steamer
made an excellent run on her last trip to this city,
and she has benn rapidly laden and went to seo yes?
terday with a full cargo. Her stevedore. Mr. Smith,
deserves mentijn for the promptness with which
his work was executed.

THE NEW CHURCH ON SULLIVAN'S ISLAND.
The Gazette for this week say.*: "Two weeks ago wo
noticed the laying of tho corner stone of a Catholic
church to be erected o:i Sullivan's Island and dedi?

St. Mary, Star of the '.'ea. Tho church is to be a
brick structure- thrty by sixty foot, having a spire
ono hundred and twenty feet high burrnoautcd by a

and development of our city. At the above mention

to several of the commercial centres of the North,
