C., wishes to purchase fifty thousand acres of pine land on or near the line of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. The intontion is to estab trucking and ft ait farms. -Colonel John W. Forney, with a party of capitalists from Washington and Philadelphia, passed tb rc ugh Raleigh a few days ago, on their way to Western North Carolina, with a view to inv sting in lands in the Counties of Caldwell and Watauga. -Ex-Secretary Stanton authorizes tho denial of the sensational story concerning an alleged issue of an order for tho supersedure of Gen? eral Grant before Vicksburg by General Banks. He says ho never issued such an order, and ho does not behove that anybody else did. -An improbable story is told that Victor Emmanuel lately visited the Pope secretly, was cordially received, and exhibited emotion at parting. It is added that tho utmost rains were taken to keep the^aignifloant event front* French ears, but it leake 1 out. -There aro conflicti'ig rumors about the ac? quisition of Cuba by the United States. Some of the reports havo it that Mr. Soward has pro? posed to bay tho i si and, and the other that Mr. Halo, our Minister at Madrid, has been approached by the Spanish authorities in rela? tion to its transfer to the United States. -Tho Empress of the French speaks and writes French quito incorrectly. Whenever she gets excited she uses a great many Span? ish words in her conversation, and when really angry, she will, at last, only speak Spanish. The sorvanta at the Imperial Court, therefore, when Haying, "The Empress has talked Span? ish to me," moans "She has scoldod me." -At the mooting of the Trustees of the Pea? body Fund, held in Baltimore on Thursday, Dr. Sears reported that he had travelled extensive? ly in Arkansas and Tennessee, and had estab? lished schools at Little Rock, Camden, Napo? leon, Fort Smith and a few other points. He statcB that he found the people ready and anx? ious to assist in carrying out the object of the gift. The schools which have been estab? lished already have generally been aided by a gift of one or two-thirds of the amount neces? sary to commenoo them, while the remaining sum has been raised by tho citizens of the vicinity. Some of those Bchools will be self sustaining by the ond of tho year. -The estimate of 2,500,000 bales of cotton (say 374,000,000 pounds) as the average of la?t year's Southern crop is a veiy encouraging one for general ti ade during this year. At an aver? age of twenty-iivo cents, the South will have o'.eated, after paying all expenses of transpor? tation, commission sales, and so on, about seventy millions of dollars. And this, says the New York Times, will be pretty much intact as new capital, for the South bought very little grain last year, raising nearly all she needed. Good sense in "accepting tho situation" and a hoariy setting to work in developing tho superb resources of our Southern country'will not fail, if opportunity bo given, to redeem i* Irom its misery and misfortune in a fow years. -"It is not enjoyment," writes a correspon? dent, "That is sought for now in Franco-it is forgetfulness. The an? swer wai evidently in her mind so conclusive, that I felt I had nothing moro to say." *?L -At no time since the war, says the Macon Telegraph, has there been so large a volume of currency afloat a? in Georgia to-day. The planters have realized an enormous price for their crop, and, being comparatively free from debt, they have the bulk of it on hand. About thirty-four thousand bales of colton have been sold in this mark it alono, bringing $4,250,000. At least $3 000,000 of this money is now within the commercial radius of Macon, to say nothing of money received for ether produots and the money we had on band when tho cotton sea? son opened. The great stock purchase has se? riously affected the Atlantic and Golf Railroad stock in our market. It has fallen from sixty to forty-eight. There is no confidence in that stock, as people generally suppose tho Central will make a mere convenience of it. -Oeorge Woodel, a Claremont farmer, was the victim ot the latest New Hampshire mur? der, which took plnoe Monday evening. His nephew, William N. Kenney, entered tbe house while Woodel and his wife were at sapper, and attacked Woodel with a knife, inflicting three j tM-r h'o wounds-one upon tbe face and two apon the throat-one of which severed che jug ular vein. He hort but ft. few ? moments. Kenney then took an axe and inflicted four more terrible woonda upon hie victim's left Shoulder, arm and hip. Kenney then attaoked Mrs. Woodol with tho axe, inflicting a terrible gash upon her bead, eutting through the skull. She made her escapo, with her babe, to her husband's father's near by, and gave tho alarm. She is now aiivo and may recovor. Kcnpey escaped without coat or hat, and is now at large, but will probably bo captured. He is about twenty-three years old, has throe half brothers living in Boston, and WAS, during tho summer, engaged in lumbering in Maine. Foreign dates are to tho 11th instant. The Paris Patrio says that the Marquis de Moustior is in an alarming condition. It is stated that tho expenditure in tho budget to be submitted to tho Constituent Cortes will not exceed 1,700, 000,000 reals. Tho Madrid Correspondencia of the 8th declares tbat there is no necessity to send any moro troups to Cuba. Tho Epoca, on tho contrary, believes it to be urgent to send considerable reinforcements thither. A Swedish parer reports that the Prince of Wales, during his stay in Stockholm, on the 20th of Docember was admitted into Freemasonry, and passed through six degrees. His Royal High? ness, on the following day, had some addition? al degreco conferred upon him, and was created a Knight of tho Masonic Order of Charles XIII. London was, on the 7th, entiroly in possession of tho fog, the darkest known this winter. Such a state is a complete calamity lor the metropolis, prevonting business and encour? aging accidents and offences of all kinds whilo it lasts. The navigation of the Thames waa altogether stopped. The Florence corres? pondent of tho Debate says that although Gari? baldi has consented to become a member of the Italian Parliament again, he will keep away from the sittings exactly as before. Tho Florence correspondent of tho Independence Bolgo scorns to consider Garibaldi's roturn to Parliament as an event of some importance, and hints that it will bo so regarded iu politi? cal circles. We do not feel that it is either a shame or a disgrace to have been born beyond the limits of Charleston or South Carolina, and if there is any dishonor in being an adopted citizen of this State, we are wil ling that either of the .editors or proprie? tors of this paper should share that dis honor with the worthy and substantial Germans, Irish, Scotch, English and North? ern men who have made South Carolina their home, and who, in their devotion to the interests of this old State, do not fear to be excelled by tho good men and true who were born within hearing of sweet St. Michael's chime?. So much for the sneers of "A Native" at the "new born "citizens who edit THE CHARLESTON NEWS," in the Utter in regard to the Port Royal Railroad, published under that signature in the Courier of Saturday. What "A Native" says in regard to the Boheme of building a railroad from Augusta to Port Roy?! may be true. If so, why not ? But never since the days of the immortal Jack Bunsby has there been such a stun? ning display of incomprehensible oracular wisdom. Captain Cuttle said of his friend Bunsby : If you were to take and show that man the buoy at the Nore, and ask him his opinion of it, Wal'r, he'd give you an opinion of it that was no more like that buoy than your uncle's buttons are. There ain't a man that walks-oertainly not on two legs-that oan come near him. Not near him. His name's Bunsby. But Lord ! it might be anything for the matter of that, with such a mind as his. And as the name of Bunsby might, as Captain Cuttle said, be anything with such a mind as his, it is not queer that "A Na "tive" should lay down the law in this pe? culiar fashion : If Charleston is to lose her present pres? tige by the building of thia road, why it is the clearest evidenoe of the wisdom of its projectors. Does "A Native" mean that it is an "evi "dence of wisdom" to cause Charleston to lose her present prestige? Or does he mean that Charleston must lose her pres? tige, and that no one oan foresee it but this prophet or son of a prophet ? Or does he mean that Charleston has no prestige, and cannot lose what she never possessed, ac? cording to the familiar principle that you cannot "tak' the breeks off a Hieland "man." Or if he does not mean either el these things, Let the original Bunsby an? swer: Whereby-why not ? If so, what odds ? Can any man say otherwise ? No. Awast, then. But it is not desired to do "A Native" injustice. Let him have tho benefit of the doubt, and let us see whether his next sen? tence will make his meaning olear. "A .'Native" says : If Charleston is to diminish, which we do not admit or desire, why that would be a proof positive that Port Royal was the place. Read this over ! "If Charleston is to dl*> "miniah * * that would be proof positive "that Port Royal was the place." What place? The plaoe of diminishing; or the plaoe of proof positive; or the plaoe of Charleston; or the plaoe of Port Royal; or common plaoe ? Nay, we have it ! Port Royal would be Charleston. As Bunsby said: For why? Which way? If BO, why not ? Therefore. A little farther on "A Native" soars aloft and chants this little song, "We" ("A Na "tive") "love Charleston, but we lore South "Carolina more." Just as Captain Cattle might say, "Affliction sore long time he "bore;" or as we might Bay, "Wo love ?A .Native' well, bat do love Bunsby more." But it seems to be difficult for "A Native" to exhaust anything bat his own English and the patience of his readers, so he sayu : Small in territory, email in population, surrounded by large and powerful States, < how is she to maintain her relative position | to her lister States unless she has commer? cial supremacy; how is she to accomplish this either by increasing ber commercial facilities through Charleston, or if th?? cannot be done, why then go to Port Royal. This bangs Bunsby, and out-Horods Herod. What becomes of the relative posi? tion if South Carolina has th? supremacy ? If th? Stat? is supreme, thor? is the ?nd of 1 th? matter without palaver. Jack Banaby said : "If a skipper Btanda out by Sen' ?'George's channel, making for the Downs, "what's right ahead of him ? The Good? wins. He isn't foroed to run upon the "Goodwins, hut he may. The hearings of "this observation lays in the application." And if the State has commercial supremacy what need is there to chatter about relative positions ? But "A Native" wants to know "How is she is to accomplish this (oommer "oial supremacy?) either by increasing her "commercial facilities through Charleston, "or if that oannot be done, why then by "Port Royal." This sentence is a jewel of a puzzle. We give it up. We wait for a reply; whioh, as Bunsby said, "That ain't "no part of our duty." We should, however, like to ask "A Na "tive" why Tua NEWS alone Bhould be so much concerned "at this profligate expendi "ture of money by the State" for the Port Royal Railroad scheme. "A Nativo" calls it a "profligate expenditure;" but does net seem to be shocked. Perhaps, like the tra? ditional turkey, he is very tough and would net stick at a ?rifle. Wait a moment ! "A "Native" goes on to say, and let the Uni? verse listen, "But there is no money spent." Sweet oensor ! Sweet critic ! Naive na? tive ! No wonder that "A Native" was not concerned; for with all this "profligate ex? penditure of money * * there is no money 'spent." We will conclude with a little anecdote : A romantic youth by the name of Reuben Smith went to a Christmas party, at which ho oondesoended to pay especial attention to a fair young damsel, whose name was Susan Jane. After the party, the romantic Smith found himself in a room adjoining the chamber which was occupied by the sweet Susan Jane and some of the friends of her youth. These girls of the period discussed the party, criticised the ladies who were there, estimated the cost and age of their rivals, and all agreed that they had had a delightful evening, that the par? ty whs delicious and tho supper perfectly elegant. One of the guileless girls then asked Susan Jane what she thought of the romantio Reuben Smith. (R, S. was in agony in the next room.) Susan hesitated a moment, and then replied: "Well ! I do I love Mr. Smith. He-is-such-a-fool!" And WK DO LOVE JACK BUNSBY, "who was "beat in his apprenticeship, for three weeks "(off an on) about the head with a ring "bolt. And yet a clearer-minded man "don't walk!" TUE FOLLOWING is the substance of the opinion pronounced by Chief Justice Moses, on refusing to grant a rule against the Ci'y Council to show cause why they should not be attached for contempt: "The return is a substantial compliance with the writ. "Ihe allegation was that the City Council failed in their duty in not declaring tbe elec? tion. "That without such official declaration the party receiving the majority of votes could not eintest his right to the office. "The return must place him in a position to do so. "It makes no difference, in point of law, that the City Council have failed to insert in their return tbe words duly elected. "Tho return is made in good faith, and has tho same effect as if tho words duly elected wore inserted. "Practically, it says: We declaro tho election by announcing the votes oast, and that Pills? bury had the majority. "Pillsbury is in as good a position as if return had said ho was duly elected. "The court does not intend to intimate any? thing further as to right of Pillsbury to quo toarranto, or as to rights of City Oounoil."
