Whonovor she gets excited she uses a great many Span iah words in ber conversation, and when really angry, she will, at last, only speak Spanish. The servants at the Imperial Court, therefore, ?when sayroir, "Tho Empress has talked Span? ish to me," means ''She has scoldod me." -At tho meeting of the Trusli.es of the Pea? body Fund, held in Baltimore on Thursday, Dr. Sears reported that ho had travelled extensive? ly in Arkansas and Tennessee, and had estab? lished schools at Little Rook, Camden, Napo? leon, Fort Smith and a few other points. He states that he found the people ready and anx? ious to assist lu carrying out the object of the gift. The schools which have been estab? lished already havo generally beon aided by a gift of one or two-thirds of the amount neces? sary to commence them, while the remaining sum has been raised by the citizens of tho vicinity. Somo of those schools will be self sustaining by the end of tho year. -The estimate of 2,500,000 halos of cotton (say 374.000,000 pout.da) as the average of hut year's Southern eri p is a very encouraging one for .general tiade during this year. The great stock purchase has se? riously affected the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad stock in our market. It has fallen from sixty to forty-eight. Tbero is no con?denco in that stock, as peoplo geuerally suppose tho Central will make a tuero convenience of it. -Georgo Wooded, a Claremont larmer, was tho victim of tho latest Now Hampshire mur? der, which teok placo Monday evening. His nephew, William N. Kenney, euteredtbebonso while Woodel and his wife wer o at supper, and attacked Woodel with a. knife, inflicting three torriblo wounds-ono upon tho face and two upon the throat-one of which Bcvcred the jug ulai* vein. He i ved but a few moments. Kenney then took an axe and inflicted four j more terrible woonda npon his victim's left | shoulder, arm and hip. Konney then attacked Mrs. Woodel with the axe, inflicting a terrible gash npon her head, cutting through the skull. She made her escape, with her babe, to her husband's father's near by, and gav; tho alarm. She is now alive and may recover. Kenney escaped without coat or hat, and is now at large, but will probably bo captured. He is about twenty-three years old, has three half brothers living in Boston, and WAS, during the summer, engaged in lumbering in Maine. Foreign dates are to tho 11th instant . Tbo Paris Patrie says tbat the Marquis de Mo us ti er is in an alarming condition. It is stated that tho expenditure in the budget to be submitted to the Constituent Cortes will not exceed 1,700, 000,000 reals. The Madrid Correspondencia of tho ?th declares that there is no necessity to som- any more troops to Cuba. The Epoca, on thc contrary, believes it to be urgent to send considerate reinforcements thither. A Swedish pat cr reports that the Prince of Wales, during his stay in Stockholm, on the 20th of ] December was admitted into Freemasonry, and passed through six degrees. His Royal High? ness, on the following day, had some addition? al degrees conferred upon him, and was created a Knight of the Masonic Order of Charles XIII. London was, on thc 7th, entirely in possession of tho fog, the darkest known this winter. The Florence corres? pondent of the Dobats says that although Gari? baldi has consented to become a mern bor of { the Italian Parliament again, he will keep away from the sittings exaotly as before. Tho Florence correspondent of tho Independence Beige seems to consider Garibaldi's return to Parliament as an event of some importance, and hints that it will bo so regarded in politi? cal circles. We do not feel that it is either a shame or a disgrace to have been born beyond the limits of Charleston or South Carolina, and if lhere is any dishonor in being an adopted citizen of this State, we are wil? ling that either of the editors or preprie tors of this paper should share that dis? honor with the worthy and substantial Germans, Irish, Scotch, English and North? ern men who have made South Carolina their home, and who, in their devotion to the interests of this old State, do not fear to be excelled by the good men and true who were boru within hearing of sweet St. Michael's chimes. So much for the sneer9 of "A Native" at the "new born "citizens who edit THE CHARLESTON NEWS," in thc letter in regard to the Port Royal Railroad, published under that signature in tho Courier of Saturday. What "A Native" says in rrgird to the scheme of building a railroad from Augusta to Pori Roy*l may be true. If so, why not ? But never since the days of the immortal Jack Buusby has there been such a stun? ning display of incomprehensible oracular wisdom. Captain Cuttle said of his friend Bunsby : If you were to take and show that man the buoy at the Nore, and ask him his opinion of it, Wal'r, he'd give you an opinion of it that was BO more like that buoy than your uncle's buttons are. There ain't a man. that walks-certainly not on two legs-ibat can come near him. Not near him. His name's Bunsby. But Lord ! it might anything for the matter of that, with such a miad as his. And as the name of Bunsby might, as Captain Cuttle said, be anything with such a mind as his, it is not queer that "A Na "tive" should lay down the law in this pe? culiar fashion : . If Charleston is to lose her present pres? tige by the building of this road, why it is the clearest evidence of the wisdom of its projectors. Does "A Native" mean that it is an "evi "dence of wisdom'' to cause Charleston to loso her present prestige? Or docs he mean that Charleston must lose her pres? tige, and that no one can foresee it but this prophet or son of a prophet ? Or does he mean that Charleston has no prestige, and cannot lose what she never possessed, ac? cording to the familiar principle that yeu cannot "lak' tho breeks off a llieland "man." Or if he does not mean either of theso Ihiugs, let the original Bunsby an? swer : Whereby-why not? If so, what odds? Can d.uy mau say otherwise ? No. Awast, then. But it is not desired to do "A Native' injustice. Let him have the benefit of the doubt, and let us see whether his noxt sen? tence will make his meaning clear. "A .?Native" says : If Charleston is to diminish, which we do not admit or desire, why 'hat would be n proof pbsuive that Port Royal was the place. Road this over! "If Charleston is to di '.miuish * * lhat would bc proof positive "that Port Royal was tho place." What place ? The place ol' dimiuiskiDg; or the place of proof positive; or Ihe place of Charleston; or the place of Port Royal; or commoa place ? Nay, we have it ! Port Hov al would bc Charleston. As Bunsby said : For why ? Which way ? If so, why not : Therefore. A little further on "A Native" soars aloft and chantB this little song, "We" ("A Na "tive") "love Charleston, but we love South "Carolina more." Ju9t as Captain Cuttle might say, "Affliction 6ore long time he "bore;" or as we might say, "We love *A 'Native' well, but do love Bunsby more." Rut it deems to be difficult for "A Native" to exhaust anything but his own English and the patience of his readers, so he says : Small in territory, small in population, eurrouuded by large and powerful Staten, how is she to mainiain her relative positiuii to her sister States unless she has comnur cial supremacy; how is she to accomplish this either by increasing her commercial facilities through Charleston, or if that caunot be done, why then go to Port Royal. This bangs Bunsby, and out-IIcroda Herod. What becomes of the relative po?i ? ion if South Carolina has the supremacy ? If the State is supreme, there is the end of the matter without palaver. Jack Bunsby Said : "If a skipper stands out by Sen' "George's channel, making for the Downs, "what's right ahead of him ? The Good "wins. He isn't forced to run upon the "Goodwins, but he may. The hearings ef "this observation lays in the application." And if the State has commercial supremacy what need is there to chatter about relative positions? But "A Native" wants to know "How is she is to aocomplish this (commer "cial supremacy ?) either by increasing her "commercial facilities tliroHgh Charleston, "or if that cannot be done, why then by "Port Royal." This sentence is a jewel of j a puzzle. We give it up. We wait for a reply; which, as Bunsby said, "That ain't "no part of our duty." We should, however, like to ask "A Na "tivc" why THE NEWS alone should be so much concerned "at this profligate expend i "lure of money by the State" for the Port Royal Railroad scheme. "A Native" calls ita "profligate expenditure;" but does not seem to be shocked. Perhaps, like the tra? ditional turkey, he is very tongh and would not stick at a trifle. Wait a moment ! "Native" goes on to say, and lot the Uni? verse listen, "But there is no meney spent. Sweet censor 1 Sweet critic ! Naive na? tive ! No wonder that "A Native" was not concerned; for with all this "profligate ex "pendilure of money * * there is no money "spent." We will conclude wilh a little anecdote A romantic youth by the name of Reuben Smith went to a Christmas party, at which he condescended to pay especial attention io a fair young damsel, whose name was Susan Jane. After the party, the romantic Smith found himself in a room adjoining the chamber which was occupied by the sweet Susan Jane and some of the friends of her youth. These girls of the period discussed the party, criticised the ladies who were there, estimated thc cost and age of their rivals, and all ogrecd that they had had a delightful evening, that the par? ty was delicious and the supper perfectly elegant. Ono of the guileless girls then asked Susan Jane what she thought of the romantic Reuben Smith. (R, S. was agony in the next room.) Susan hesitated a moment, and then replied: "Well! Ido love Mr. Smith. "That without such official declaration the party receiving tho majority of votes could not contest hie right to tho office. "Thc rotura must placo him in a po?ition to do so. "It make3 no difference, in point of law. that the City Council have failed lo insert in their return tho woreU* duly elected. "The return is made in good faith, and has thc samo cff.ct as if the words duly elected were inserted. "Practically, it says: We declare thc election by announcing the votes cast, and that Pills? bury had tho majority. "Pillsbury is in as good a position as if retain had said ho was duly elected. "Ibo court does not intend to intimate any? thing further as to right of Pillsbury to quo warrunlo, or as to rights of City Couucil."
