THE DEATH OF J. W. BROWNFIELD.-To re? cord the work of death in its ravages among our friends is thc mest painful duty of the journalist, sud the more especially is th is thc case whon. as in the present inst a i ce, tho blow has fallon upon one rich in all the uoblo qualities that give dignity to human character, and occupying an exalted place in tho estimation of his fo'low-men. John W. Brownfield, tho subject of this notice, was born in Sta'.oourg, Sumter District, in this bta'e, on tho 21th of i ccember, 1807. After sn academic conreo in seuih Carolina, he completed hi? educa" Hon in Waehmgton Colle^o in Connecticut. He pre? pared himself for tho bar, but soon ro'icquisliod that practice, and entered upon the more quiet ana congenial pursuit oi agriculture. In 1630 he was invited to Charleston and was called to an important omeo iu tho Bank of thi h tate, the duties of which ho continued to discbaVge until 1861, when ho was elected to tho highly responsible office of Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas and General Sessions for Charleston District. This po? sition he continued to hold until a few months since, when hs was superseded, amid the general toulcoenement resulting from tho war. It would be scarcely possible to sneak in exagger? ated terms of the manner in which Mr. Brownfield responded to the confidence reposed in him by the public. The very soul of honor, he could do no? thing that was contrary to lui d?ctales. Conscien? tious in the purest acceptation of the term, no allure? ments oonld charm him from the path which doty pointed out, and he left tho offioe .which he has so worthily filled with the deep regrets sf the entire community.
