It was soon ascertained that Ir. Robert Laten, a passenger, about sixty years of ge, had suddenly fallen prostrate on board, with he mott serious symptoms. Immediate efforts were made by the officers and passengers to relieve bim, nd the services of Dr. W. T. Wragg were soon ob i tined; but the Doctor had hardly reached the pa? rent when life waa found to be extinct? supposed f om a disease of the heart. The tax bill was taken up tor considsration. alder man Honour moved to reduce the tax on real estate, proposed in the first section, from $2 60 to $2. Alderman Honour made a few remarks in support of his motion, showing tho evil effect* of overtaxing real estate. He eald, among other things, that with such taxes not mote than four per emt. interest on the capital would bc realized from real Catate, which was so much lower than other investments that lt would prevent the burnt district from ever being re bullt. Alderman Geddings made an elaborate reply, urg? ing the necessity of paying the interest on the oity debt Alderman Honour was anxious also to pay the in? terest of the city debt, but thought it could be done by keeping up the tax on sales and by curtailing ex? penses. The amendment was lost-ayes 5; noes 10. Alderman Olney offered the following amendment to paragraph 29 of section 1, which waa adopted: Fifty cents op every $100 of gross receipts or collec? tions made by any consignee or consign?es, shipping agent or ?gents, or any other person or persons act? ing at the Port of Charleston as agent or agents for any sailing vessel or vessels, or steamers, the same payable monthly by the said consignees or sgenta to the city treasury if they are residents of the city, and immediately eu collections if they aro non-residents. Al der nan Lindstrom moved to amend the section in regard to the street railroad by reducing the tax on cars to $2 60 a month, includiag the horses and mules in that tax. Adopted.
