IN AN OBITUARY] NOTICE of tho late Colonel Hamiltcn, published last week in THU NEWS, several sad blunders were commitled by the types. The most annoying mistake was the substitution of the word "discretion" for "distinction." THE BANK OP THE STATE.-Tho Pheonix, of Saturday, bas the following paragraph : "The man? damus in tho case sf the Bank of tho State is set for a hearing on Thursday, 14th instant. Bon. W. F. A STOCK EXCHANGE.-Befereuce to this sub? ject is again suggested by the advertisement ot the ' sale of Law Range and other valuable real estate ad? joining IL The whole property is offered for sale to? gether, and of course, eveu at only one-third cash, w ill require large Immediate capital to purchase it, an amount so large indeed that it will confine com? petition for the purchise to very few bidders. It would seem that the lot might be divided and other buildings gold to more advantage separately. The purchaser or purchasers of Law Range might then utiliza the present open square by cavering it and making a stock exchange, or general merchants' ex? change, and the offices which are now rented to lawyers at nominal prices might, when occupied by brokers and bankers, be made to pay very high fig? ures. THE COURT OF GENERAL SESSIONS AT ORANGE BUBO.-The term of the Court of General Sessions commenced in Orangeburg on Monday, tho fourth. Judge Carpenter took his scat on that day, and the juries were at once organized. The Orangeburg News remarks: The criminal dockets aro vory heavy, and there ssems but little likelihood of ail of the cases being disposed cf this week. We learn, however, thit the Judge has determined to continua tbe sessions until aU of the criminal mut er is oleured from the dock? ets. Judge Carpenter has n thi->, bis first court on the circuit, won golden opinions from all in the com? munity. His administration cf justice is marked with great ability ; and his ohargea to the Juries, both as to the exposinon ol the law as well as the state? ment of testimonv, show a thorough knowledge of his profession, end a perfect discrimination of light and wrong, togetuer ? 1th iairness and justice rarely surpassed. We predict for the. Judge a most certain popularity in his career on tho bench, based upon all the higher qualities and attributes which belong to the ormino. It is not likely that any civil cases oi consequence will bo touched befure tho week after next FIRE.-On Saturday morning last, about five o'clock, a fire occurred ii the rear of Mr. J. B. D., late elected assis? tant pastor of the English Lutheran Church, preach? ed a most eloquent and appropriate sermon yester? day, on the fifty-fourth anniversary of Dr. Bachman's ministerial services in tbat church. His text was taken from the 17th chapter of Exodus, and the ll tb, verse: "And it came to pass, when Moses held up bis hand, that Israel prevailed; and when ho let down l is band, Amalek prevailed." We should perhaps do the eloquent divine injus? tice by aoytuing like an attempt to sketch the ser? mon, or even to transfer the most e'oquent and striking passages to paper. To be appreciated In all Its force and power, it should be beard. 'J ho occa? sion was one of deep interest and impressive solem? nity, which was felt and exhibited by all, both preichor and congregation. His allusions to tho aged pastor who had faith? fully and effectively administered tho word of life to th's people for the last half century, were touch? ingly pathetic, and brought tears to manyan eye unused to tbe metung rnooa. TIM fcrurroyar? ur memory gave up its dead, and the mind of many travelled back to other times whlob now lie moulder? ing beneath the mossy tombstones ol the unfor? gotten past. And there stood their Moses, tottering and feeble with age, whose hands they bad held up, and who had led them from Bethel to Jericho, and from Jericho they were approaching Jordan. The house was densely crowded, and the eloquent speaker did full justice to the solemn sad impres? sive occasion, holding tbe iapt attention of his audience from beginning te end. The battle of Rephidim between Israel and Amalek was striking ly portiayed as representing the battle between the church audits enemies of tho present day. At the close of tbe sermon, Dr. Bacbman delivered his fifty-fourth anniversary discourse, which was re? plete with touching pathos, faithful exhortation, and fatherly advice, He speke of tho triumphant march of the Lutheran Church, until it new included a membership of forty millions, perhaps as many as all other Protestant denominations combined. In the reoent erection of a monument to Luther, at Worms, the whole Protestant world sympathized with the movement, und, to a great extent, aided in ita accomplishment. In conclusion, he paid a merit? ed compliment to the assistant pastor, and said that he .v is the man of his own choice, and that the con? gregation had unanimously confirmed his selection. It is no mean honor to ba worthy of the mantle of a Bacbman, and may the assistant pastor be tbe Elisha upon whom it miy fall.
