GBEAT REDUCTION IN THE PBICE OF GAS. An import mt announcement to tho citizens of Charleston, and especially to those of uoderato means, is mado in our advertising columiiB this morning. Tbero are in fact but few men in our city so well off that they can learn with indifference that the price of gas bas been reduced twenty per cent. At the close of the war the Gas Company were com? pelled by circumstances to charge as high as S7 per thousand feet for gas, but dincc then, as tho price of coal has fallen ond th<nr facilities tor its manufacture have increased, they have reduced the price first to $6, then, to $5, and now to $4 per thousand feet. But they show a disposition to ac? commodate the public, not only by reducing the price of gas, but by affording facilities for its use free of charge. It will bo seen by ihe advertisement this morning that the com? pany offers to lay the pipo from tho .-treet to the basement of the house without danger to new consumers. This together with the reduc tisit of the price to $4 per thousand f.ot makes gas the cheapest, as it is already the best light ihit can bc us?d. In comparing gas with kerosene, as every one does nowadays, the cost of burners and chimneys, the value of the labor ot cleaning and the additional risk oi fire and lo?s of life, should not be omitted in estimating the expense of keroseno. The gas company have benefltteJ. the public and espe? cially the fire and life insurance companies by Uin? liberality, and they should be met in hke manner by the public and be generously supported. A very large increase in the consumption of gas is necessary to make its manufacturo profitable at the present low price, and the people owe it to the gas company and to themselves ihst such increase should not be wanting. CHAELESTON BO ABD OF TBADE.-There was a very largo attendance of the members ot tho Board of Trade last night, Presilcnt W. L. Trenholm in tho chair.
