Strike on this Rice Plantations, Cooper
Bxteb.?The laborers in the rice fields on the Cooper
Biver have struck for one-half of the crop, instead of
one-third allowed under the arrangement of ihe
past season. The planters are much perplexed, and
many of them are in the city seeing what can bo
done in order to cultivate the next year's crop.

attending on tbiB court have been discharged until
the fiiBt Monday in February, at which time the Dis
trict Attorney, D. T. Corbin, Eeq., stated he would
present some oriminal cases
The petit Jury was discharged until Monday next,
when the Judgo will listen to any issues in bank
ruptcy. _ _
The Theatre .?There was a full house at
tha theatre last evening to witnesB the domestic
drama of tbe Lilly of Kll larney, which was perform
ed by the versatile an d accomplished Mr. and Mrs.
Watkins, assisted by the talented members of the
GUbort Troupe. The laughafcle farce, "To Oblige
Benson," created considerable mirth. To-night wiU
be performed the favorite drama, estitled "Ihe Hid
den Hand, or Virginia uh it Was." Iho dramatiza
tion is by Mr. Harry Watkins.
The Unitarian Pulpit.? The Rev. R. P.
Cutler, of i rooklyn, late of San Francisco, Califor
nia, is filling this pulpit to tho great satisfaction of
tho congregation. His oratorical and rhetorical qual
ifications are said to bo very fine. His readings are
characterized by grace and correctness. The ser
mons that he has preached bo far have been of a high

contemplated visit to Florida with Bishop Wightman.
Affray in Rxno-stbeet_Yesterday after
noon, Officer Lafayette C. Wolfe, while trying to
serve a magistrate's warvdnt on a man by the name
of Emanuel, at the house of Dr. Collins, King-street,
near Morris, was resisted by Collins, and a fight en
sued, in which Wolfe was roughly handled. Wolfe
appealed to the officer of tho Upper Guardhouse for
a policeman to assist him in carrying out his duty,
but was refused. Wolfe finally eouglit assistance at
the Lower Guardhouse, where a sufficient force was
furnished him. Emanuel was taken in custody, but
up to a late hour last night the policemen were still
hunting for Dr. Collins.
The Week of Pbayeb.?Two roligious ser
vices were held yesterday?one in the afternoon, at
the Circular Church, aad the other in the evening,
at ttie Citadel Square Church. Both were well at
tended and very interesting. Three olergymen par
ticipated in the af iernoo.i service. At night, Kev.
Mr. Wightman prosided. Appropriate and earnest
addresses were made by Rev. J. T. Wightman and
Bev. O. P. Gadsden, and prayer was offered by Bev.
Dr. Winkler and Rev. W. H. Adams. Iho meet
ings of th'.b week of prayer oontinue to grow in in
terest.
To-night the meeting is in the Lu'.he tan Church,
Wentworth-street?Bov. Mr. Bowman's; and the
subject, "Family Beligion and the Conversion of the
Young."

Ihe great topic of conversation yesterday was the
mandamus, and how it would bo decided. It was ru
mored last oventng that a telegram had been received
in this city stating that the writ had boon granted.
Masquerade balls and parties are all the rago in
the city now. Scvoi al parties bave been given within
the past week, at which the crstumes were unique
and elegant.
Mr. F. L. O'Neill, the newly cloctcd Assistant
Chief oi the Fire Department, was installed last night
Dr. Bucbman's congregation are going to rebuild
the Sunday School house, destroyed by fire during
tho war.
The whitewashing brigade is only waiting for fair
weather to get vigorously to work.
A wariant of aireat was issued yesterday by Magis
trate Axson for the three men who afsaulted Kelson
in his barroom, corner of King and Tradd streets, a
couple ef nichts ago.
J. W. BrownflnlH, lato Clerk of tho Court, is vory
ill in Summei ville. His recovery is thought doubt
ful.
By resolution of the Board of Directors of the City
'Railroad, all free tickets have been withdrawn.
A vale of city stock was reported yesterday at sixty
-cents.
A number of f oldiers of the garrison at the citadel
are being discharged dally, their terms of enlistment
having expired.
A goat was arrested in King-street yesterday,
which was painted in fancy colors on the homo,
nose, neck, legs, back and toil, and had the words
"Ku-Klux," in large - 'etters on both its sides.
