A HEABTBENDINO OCCUBBENCE.- Yesterday af? ternoon, at the corner of King and Liberty-streets, a heartrending incident occurred, which, for a while, created the most intense excitement. Mrs. Osborn, the wife of the photographer who keeps an art gallery over the fctore of Miles Drake, Etq., was so severely burned by* kerosene eil lhat her life is despaired of. Sho had been laboring under mental abel ration lor several days, which developed itself moro seriously yesterday afternoon, when she pro? cured 9 large can of kerosene oil and emptied it about the gaUery, and thea applied a mate"1 :o tho inflammable substance Mr. Osborn was several rooms off, and ignorant of her st:ange ac, Hons, until she came rushing into his apartment, enveloped in flames. Sc. ing her alormi g condition > ho i inmediately drew a thin counterpane off a smal? bcd noar by, and tried to subdue tho fire, but all lo no avail; ho then rushed into the front room and seized a couple of blankets, and tried again to smother thc flames new fast consuming the clothes o' the suffering lady. THE MOUNT PLEASANT FE?,BT. -Thc cltizons of Mount Pleasant and Sullivan's islaud can congrat? ulate themselves that there ls again a comfortable boat upon the ferry line, ind there is no longer any risk of communication with the city being suddenly and unexpectedly interrupted. Mr. H. L P. McCor? mick, who has beon keeping up the lino during tho last two or three years for the accommodation ot thc public, in the m dst of great diffloultici and discour agemen's, is a man of too many resources and too much energy to be overcome, oven by the loss ol a good boat. When the Rockland was sunk last week by on unfortunate occident, and tho patrons of tho line were compelled to put np with the accommoda? tions of the Plato, Mr. McCormick, after making arrangements for raising the Rockland as early as possible, went at once to Savannah. There he with? drew the Edlslo from the Savannah and Danen line, which had proved very pio?tablc, in order ta put her on the Charleston and Edisto line, and thus redeve the Pocoin, which he ordered to Charleston. He then returned to Charleston, and is now here managing the lerry with his accustomed skill, aud prepared as ever to use all his ability and tact for the accommodation of the pub ic, and thc advancement of the interests of Charlo jton and the sui rounding country. THE STBEETS AND PLANK EOADS.-Thc chair? man and members of the Committee on Streets have managed ?heir department of thc city adminis? tration with ability an 1 energy, as is evi Jenced by the following items which will to read with interest by persons interested in horse flesh: A new plank road is to bo laid in Beaufuin-street, from King down to the water, at thc west ood. Another now road of plink is in contemplation from the Mall through Columbus-street to King. The plank road from tho South Carolina Railroad in John-s'rcet, through Eltzaboth to the herd of An s;n-street, was completed yesterday ufternoan.'and is open to drays and vehicles to-day. This road will connect with the one terminating at i lie head of East Bay on Calhonu-strcet. Thc connection is be? ing rapidly pressed forward, and will bc done by next Wednesday. Still another plai.k road is pro? posed in Kiog-.treet, from Linc-strect down to Vau derhors:. The plank road leading to tho railroads will be of immense advantage to transportation, and lightens tho burden on thc animals very materially, as the way over which they have been going prior to layiug the planks and grading the road was very boggy and heavy. And yet another plank ror.d is projected through Concord-street to Laurens, and thence to l ast Bay. Tho Laurens-8treet port ia to be made up prineipolly of good planks taV on from thc repaired road m King street The Colboun-street branch of thc plank i oad, which connects with Woshington-strcct, will be con t-nt cd to Coucord-street, the last street ca Gadsden's Wharf. This will please Aldeimau Ho'.vard, no doubt. A TOUCHING INCIDENT-A FATHER RECOVERS HIS LONG-LOST SON.-A few days a?o, an unfortu? nate young man, who had seeu better dav?, but had yielded to the ruinous influences of ldl-ucss and drink, fe'.l into tho hand3 of the poltc? aul was carried to the Up-town Guardhouse. As is usually done on such occasion-, ho was searched, and the articles, knife, pocket book, watch, ic, lound io his possss-.ion were taken in charge by the officers, (0 be safoly kept until he should be ic'.odscd. That night a strang-.-r, an old gray-headed fettle mau, we i dressed, and evidently well to do in the world, 4iad occasion to call at the Guardhouse to look alter some property Which he had lost. "TOI you let mo seo thc man who brought it herc?" "How do yon rccognizs Iho watch ?" asked the officer. "1 bouaht it ia this very city, tm years ago. as a Christmas present lor my sou, who ins then quite a boy. sec, lhere, is the jeweller's narnu on it: ?ames E. Spear, K wj-^trect, Charktton S. C," "Yes," replied thc officer, ..Mr. Sp:ar is a well known and relia1 le jewe 1er of this city, who aiways sells a greut number or Chrlatmts present?. You ?ball see thc man." Tho man wai brous'.it out, and proved to bc iho s'rau^ur'.siong-los: son. There was groat joy, miugled with gr.-?t sorrow. 'Ihe lather paid his sou's fine, and carried him off to take him home, and it is hoped that tho prodigal will improve ? his opport'inity to become a wiser and a better man.
