Apply to the agents, Messrs. James Adirer & Ce. A THOROUGH CONSERVATIVE.-The Zeitung of yesterday .-peaks of a model Democrat who gave fifty dollars to the Citizens' party and five hundred dollars to the Pillsburyitee. The Zietung seems to be posted, and should not indulge in inuendoes, but should ventilate all cases of fraud that come undpr its Lotice. IMPORTANT REMOVAL.-M e s s r s. Leitch & Bruns, whoso auction rooms on Broad Street have become tho centre of a large and valuable business, have recently romoved to No. 95 Broad-streot, formerly occupied by Mr. Bolger as a saddlery establishment. The premises are being refitted aod refurnished, and will soon become as popular a resort as their old stand. PAS YOUR Cm TAXES.-The third instal? ment of city taxes is now due, and, in the pre? sent strained circumstances of the city finances, patriotic citizens should not wait for tho last day allowed them by the law. It is all important that the obligations of the city gov? ernment should be promptly met, and those property-holders who have the money at com? mand would bo consulting their own interests, as well as those of the public at largo, by set? tling up at once._ SUBLIME IMPUDENCE.-The character of the ideas inculcated in the minds of tho more ignorant class of negroes by their Radical leaders may be iuferred from the following brief dialogue, which was overheard in the streets a few nights since : First Bagged Darkie-How de protes gitten on to-day? Second Bagged Darkie-Why, we got de white folks under hack. All we Traid of now ia de white tolks might mek anoder insurrec? tion. Fir3t Bagged Darkie-For true, brudder, an I reckon dat what dey hab dem Bogers down to de guardhouse for toder day, jis for keep dem white people quiet. " THE ZEITUNG AND THE ELECTION.-In yes? terday's NEWS we printed a translation of an ar? ticle published in the Zeitung in regard to the late Municipal election. This ai tic'.c has, wo are surprised to learn, been regarded as on endeavor to laud the patriotism of the Ger? mans of Charleston at the expense of the Irish. Sucli was not our intention, and TC are equally sure that it was not the intention of the writer in the Zeitung. Itmaybewoll to say here tb at we do not necessarily approve ot opinions expressed by other journals, because they are republished in THE NEWS, a id, in truth, in tbo present case wo do not see that the article referred to contains anjthhig to which the most fastidious should object,_ BEAL ESTATE SALES.-Mr. Hutson Lee sold yesterday, at the old Customhouse, a lot and buildings on the north side of Vendue Bange, measuring front nineteen feet ten inches, by fifty-jeven foot six inches deep, for $4950 one-third cash, tho balance in one year. Messrs. Leitch & Bruns also sold for J. W Gray, Esq., Master in Equity, a lot and build? ings on the north side of Baaufain-atroet, measuring thirty-five ieet front by two hun? dred feet deep, for $5000-one-thud cash, the balance in throe equal annual instalments. A lot and buildings on Mill-street, measur? ing front on Mill-street forty feet four inches, by ninety-nino feet lour inches deep, for $2009 -one-third cash, the balance in one and two years. Rt MO VAL OF MESSRS. HOLMES & CALDER. Messrs. Holmes & Calder wcro burnt out some time ago by the same Uro that destroyed the crockery establishment of Mr. W. L. Webb. With commendable energy aad enterprise they rebuilt and reopened their store. They had scarcely settled down, however, when another accident befell them. lu taking down the re? mains of .tho store of Mr. Webb for the purpose of rebuilding, thc walls suddenly caved in aud fell opon tho store of Messrs. Holmes & Calder, so recently repaired, and it.jurod it in such a manner that they were compelled to vacate. They have now opened their paint and oil warehouse on East Bay, next door to the well known grocory of Messrs. W. H. Chafeo & Co., tv here they, will be glad to meet their old cus? tomers, and to get now ones. (ONE GOOD ESTOCT OP THE ELECTIONS.-It ia . ai> undeniable fact that the interest taken in tho Presidential aud Muaioipal contest has roused our people from their lethargy and in? difference, and infused into them some of that vitality so absolutely necessary to tho attain? ment of. prosperity. It may not bo that there is actually any greater amount of busincsa transacted, though tiiere very probably ia, but what is dono is certainly done with an activity and life that was a scd stranger to our business thoroughfares a mfnth a,o. T'iose are not wild ncr vague, romantic nor chimerical, asser? tions, but remarks founded on close observa? tion and the knowledge of important fa:ts. One of the surest tests of the lifo and anima? tion of a city is the circulation of its newspa? pers, and it is certainly a hopeful sign of tbo resuscitation nt tho business prosperity of Charleston, that the daily city circulation of THE NEW3 is now between four hundred and .five hundred moro than it was a month ago. THE BANNES OF THE SOUTH.-Tais excollent exponent of Southern literature and Southern sentiment ia edited by Rev. A. J. Byan, au? thor of the Southerj po?m3 entitled "The Con? quered Banner," "Sword of Bobcrt E. Lee," "Prayer ot the South," &c. A very interesting and pleasantly written story-' The Earls of Southeiland," from tho pen of a talented lady of Georgia, is now being "published in Tho Banner. This journal is publishoi at Augusta, Ga., by L. T. Blome & Co., at $3 per annum, or $150 for six monthi, invariably in advanoe. Tho people of the South should give it an ear? nest and liberal Bupport. Wc are requested to announce that back numbera of the Banner, containing "The Earls of Southerland," can be supplied. The story ?a a charming one, being one of the most in? teresting and pleasing we have ever read. A LIBERAL INSURANCE COMPANY.-It is not very often that wo have to chronicle a gener? ous act on the part o? a privato corporation, but we received information of one through a notice in tho Savannah News of Mond y, that is highly creditable and deserving cf special notice, particularly from tho fraternity of j our? nalists, as it was the widow of a deceased brother who came in for the benefit of its liber? ality. Mr. S. W. Mason, formerly editor and proprietor of th - News, insured his lii'o in tho Knickerbocker Lifo Insurance Company, of which Mi*. J. Hutson Leo, of thia city, is agent. From some oversight or neglect, ho allowed tho policy to expire, or failed to pay thc pre? mium which waa nee.saar? to its renewal. Ho went North some months ago and thero died. The company was uudor no obligations to pay the amount of tho policy, but in consideration of the service rendered it thiough his di? urnos", and the noedy condition of his family, tho amount waa promptly paid over to bia surviving widow. Such bread cast upon thc waters never fails to return. AN INTEEESTISO PRESENTATION.-The Au? gusta papers contain an interesting account of a recent compliment to J. A. Brenner, Esq., tho accomplished and indefatigable superin? tendent of the Third District Western Uuio;: Telegraph Company. Mr. Brenner was unfor? tunate enough, a few weeks ago, to bo robbed of his watch and chain. When this became kuown, tao manager and o aerators of tho Au? gusta office proposed to the employees of other offices in the Third Distric*, to prosent Mr. Brenner with a gold watch and ciiai -. The proposition waa readily seconded, the money subscribed, and the watch and chain purchased. On Tuesday night, Mr. Brenner was surprised by a visit from his sabordinalce, bearing thia handsome testimonial. Tbo pre? sentation was made in a neat speech, and duly acknowledged by the recipient. Thc watch and chain cost two hundred and twenty dol? lars. Tho watch is of tho American style and make, eighteen carat gold, double case, full jewelled. It is but simple justice to Mr. Brou ner to say that the working of the telegraphic arrangements in this district has never been so Bmooth and satisfactory as now. SOUTHERN ENTERPRISE--MACHINERY MADE CHEAPER THAN AT THE NORTH-A BKIEF DE? SCRIPTION OF THE PHIENIX IRON WORKS. Messrs. J. F. Taylor & Co., tho proprietors of the Pboaix Iron Works, have been uutiring in "advancing the mechanical talent and ability of Charleston. They have established a largo foundry and machine shops, possessing ample facilities for all mechanical demands, and em? bracing the newest and best pattorns of lahor eaving machinery. Mr. Taylor, tho bead of the firm, is a practical mechanic, whose skill has been widely acknowledged. A largo portion of the machinery m hit establishment has been made at tho Pboaix Works, and they have suc? cessfully competed with the Northern manufac? turers. The eDgine which drivoa the machine? ry both in the Pboaix Works and in Mr. W. P. Russell's sash and bliul factory, waa designed by Mr. Taylor, and though of 120 horse-power, it occupies but a small space, lt is upright, and made ou a now principle. Tho boilers have attached to them a low water steam guage, which instantly gives the alarm whe the water is running low, by sounding a whis? tle. All accidents are thus nravonted, and tho motive power of tho machinery is tho same throughout the establishment. Mr. Taylor has recently finished several complicated pieces of machinery for tho Wando Phosphate Works, the various steamers in thc harbor, and tho boats engaged in dredging and raising the Bunkeu monitors. One of the Charleston flotilla, tho Pilot Boy, was compelled co have a now. boiler, and her owner, Captain John Fergusoti, decided to employ homo talent, and gave the coutiuct to Mr. Taylor. This boiler was finished and turned over to the owners ycstordiy, and prov? ed to be not only entirely satisfactory, but compared favorably with thoso of Nortborn manufacture that have been lately brought to this city. The boiler of tho Pilot Boy is seven and a half feet in diameter, sixteen feet six inches in length, a..d haB four flues and sixty tubos. The steam chimney is six feet six inches in diameter, and oight feot high, and the engine and boiler is of ono hundred and twenty horse power. The entire work is solid and substantial, every rivet having been care? fully welded, a few of them by machinery, but tho larger portion by hand. Thc superiority of this home-made boi'or to thoso imported is the more manifest when it ia known that it waa furnished at one-third the cost, and will, it is estimated, outlast the others by several years. The Phoenix Iron Works aro essentially a home enterprise, managed with home capi? tal, and controlled by u practical mechanic, whoso ability is appreciate! by thoso who know that Char'ostou talent is fully equal to that developed in tho North. CHARLESTON AND SELM4.-Tho following paragraphs {rom the Solma Times show that our merchants arc already preparing to tafe advantage of tho opening or thc railroad con? necting Charleston with Selma. Wc hope that tho name of our city will soon be ai familiar as that of Now York in every city o? thc South, and that tho opening wodgo at Salnu will bc driveu home by t.ie hird knocks oi all our en? terprising mere int?lo botts :s : Three weeks ago our merchants and busi? ness men scarcely remomberod that there was such a placo as Charleston, and the peop'.o of Charleston scarcely know of tho existetico of such a place ai Selina, or of sue!) a country as thc rich one around here. Ia the twinkling ot' an cy0 all has changed; Charcston and Selma aro neighbors; our respectivo business houses are forming connection's; and tho people of the two cities are becoming acquainted. A con? tinuous railroad and through cari from the Alabama Biver to tho Atlantic at Charleslon have broken down tho ? arriera that separated those cities, and mutual interests are draw? ing our pooplo together. For tho first time in too history ol' Solina, yesterday d Charleston house was represented hero soliciting our business; and, properly enough, that bouse WAS that of G. W.
