The lobby of thc Courthouse and the porches of St. Michael's Church, and the Guardhouse were occupied, during thc carly part of the mor nins, by a number of colored persons, in? terested ia the protest ; bat as the day ad vane?d. thoy struck bea linos for their several homes. _-_ Ax INFLUX OF STRANGERS.-Tho floating pnpulaLioa of Charleston has been considerably increased daring the past few days by the arrival of a large number of strangers, who aro visiting the city on busino3S and pleasure. The lists of ho.'el arrivals have assumed formidable -proportions, and those r-opuhr resorts present a more livoly aspect than for months past. Many of thes3 transient visitors are delegates lo the Grand Lodge now ia session, while others, who aro Nortaerneis, have come to iu apoct the phosphate deposits, and to invest t'ieir funds in this and other Southern cnter . prises._ MOIST AND UNPLEASANT.- The clouds that . lowered o'er this town discharged their watery contents about nine o'clock yesterday morning, and kept discharging during the day greatly to the disgust of some persons whose out-door business was thus summarily quashed. The real estate sales which had been advertised failed to come off, as the bidders would not come out, and the auctioneers wore reluctantly compelled to bo themselves "going, go-in, gone." .t ?as a miserably muddy day, neither warm nor cold, and sufficiently disagreeable to indu?c an attack of the blues. Toward night the rain ceased, and thero was some prospect ot a bright sky to-day. SALE OF A VALUABLE LAW LIB SAE Y_The law library ot' tho late James Tupper, Esq., Master in Equity, was Bold yesterday by Messrs. R. M. Marshall & Brother, at their auction rooms in Broad-street. Notwithstanding the iain there was a large attendance of the legal fra? ternity, and the bidding was quite brisk. The library,which had been carefully selected, com? prised many of the standard legal authorities, and the competition among the lawyers caused most of tho books to be knocked down at high figures. In some ina tar ces a better price was realized than publishers' rates, and the entire sale was one of the best that has taken place in Charleston since the war. GBAND LODGE A. F. M.- FOREIGN COBBES PONDENCE.-The annual report of the Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of the Ancient Freemasons of South Carolina, on foreign cor? respondence, has been published in pamphlet form by ivesBra. Walker, Evans & Cogswell, Stationers and Printers, No. 3 Broad and 109 East Bay streets. The condensed accounts of | Masonic transactions in other States, and the remarks thereon, indicate the abili'y of the Grand Secretary and his deep study of Masonic ethics, and the report is one of great interest to the fraternity. The pamphlet is printel on good paper, with clear and handsome type, and is altogether a fair specimen of tho typographi? cal excellence which marks the work of Messrs. Walker, Evans & Cogswell. The second article, ou "Clever Women," is a charmin? paper upon thc vexed question of the relations of the sexes. Thc essayist, whilo adinitti .g that "a woman's eyes are never so beautiful as when they look up," delineates, nevertheless, with groat judgment and impartiality, the sphere in which tho abilities ol' a real c'.uvor woman removed equally from exceptional genius on thc one hand and from insipid frivolity on tho other-should, and. in the pres-ut state of society, may find their true exercise and de? velopment. His view is contrasted and illus? trated by various extracts from a Feminine diary of fifty years ago, which form in them? selves thc most tantalizing bits of exquisite suggestion in the world.
