THS LIQUOR LAW.-According to an act of ?the Legislature, ali bar-rooms and other drink? ing places are ordered to be closed on the days of an 3leciion, and a severe penalty is impos? ed lor any violation of this ordinance. No disturbance is anticipated at the coming ejec? tion, but it is the part of wisdom to remove Ruy cause that would be likely to create on -excitement, and wo eincerely hope that there will be no evasions of the law, and none but sober men be seen around the polls. -THE RIGHT SPIRIT.-A gentleman from New York recently bought a farm near Aiken, S. G His citizenship in the Empire Stale was not forfeited, although feeble health compelled him to remain South during a portion of the Tear. Very much prostrated aBd hardly in condition for travel, this gentleman has dc termined to sacrifice his ease for the sake of bis country's prosperity, and so has gone to New York for the sole purpose of voting for Sevmour and Blair. BURGLARY. -Several houses in different parts of the city have been recently entered and des poded of their lead and gas piping and copper pumps. These robberies aie usually effected in vacant houses, but the thieves are some? times bold and skilul enough to en*er occu? pied premises without awaking any ono. On Friday and Saturday nights there were two robberies of this character iu Calhoun-street, and a hen roost of the adjoining house was de? prived of its feathered inmates. A good yard dog might put some midnight prowler hors du cymbal, and relieve the community of a nui sir.ee._ WARD No. 4.-The largest Ward in the city should not be neglectful of its duty to-night. Let thc meeting be iii proportion t? thc Ward, and its influence cast in the right direction. FIRE.-The ala: m ci' fire was sounded at three o'clock on Friday night which brought out the firemen, though they were unable to had the place, and it was generally supposed to be a false alarm. The steeplenuu ai the Orphan House saw the hames from a chimney in Cal? houn 6treet. between King and Mee ing, and sounded " Ward 3." This was repeated by St. Mitchael's bell, but the Cre wai then extin? guished._ LOCKED CP ETA CHURCH YAIID.-Yestordny evening a.ter the services i:i St. Michael's Church were over, se vet al ladies of the con? gregation visited the graveyard and lingered there some time. Tba sexton, not aware ol thuir presence, closed the church and locked the gates. The ladies soon found that their egress was impossible, au i made their unpleas? ant predicament known to some gentlemen passing bye, but it was not until a late hour that the sexton was found and the ladies re? leased. THE enters.-On Saturday night another roujing crowd lilied the eauvas, and the shouts of merriment could be heard iibove the music of the band. No circus has been better attend? ed, and John Robinson can flatter himself ou the reception accorded him iu his cativo city. His circus is uo humbug, but comprises the best talent in the profession, and the iinest col? lection of animals in any menagerie. These have been procured at a great expense from all parts of the globe, and form ono of the most interesting featiu-es iu tho entertainment. The acting of the clowns, the feats of agility, and tho equestrian skill displayed are perhaps un? equalled, and combine to reader this circus one of the gieatest of travelling shows. THE ATLVXTIC AND GCLF RAILBOAD.-Mr. H. S. Haines, thc General Superintendent of this road, advertios a new schedule for the night express and day trains, which enables passen? gers to make a connection between Jackson? ville and Sav.nnah, and by steamers from St. marks, Florida, to New Orleans. This road is the main route betweon Florida, Savannah and Charleston, and the schedule published else? where furnishes the minutest details interest? ing io travellers. It is especially important to notice that by this fast sehe tide the distance between Savannah and Jacksonville, two hun? dred and sixty-three miles, is mado in the re? markably short time of twelve and a half hoars, or at the rate of tweuty-one miles an hour, in? cluding stoppages. THE WoFfosD COLLEGE.-A correspondent at Spartanburg desiree us to mention the fact that the Wofford College has never been closed, the regular exercises having been continued since it first opened about fourteen years ago. The first session of the fiiteeuth collegiate year began on the 1st October. Nearly ono hundred students were present, and more were expected in Jauuary. The Radicals in Spartauburg are giving tip the ghost. Corn is selling at fifty to sixty Bents per bushel. Much to be thankful tor. "Plenty to eat. Democracy on top. Three whites to one colored man. Two hundred colored Democrats and others coming over." Happy place that ! WARD NO. 6.-Lot the spirit and independ? ence which bas ever characterized the p. htical conduct of the citizens of this Ward, bear good fruit at the meeting to-night. THE NEW PILOT BOAT.-That line specimen UL boat building, the new pilot boat " Neca," which has been lyiug hore since her launch receiving the finishing touches of the joiners, pain tot 6 and riggers, departed yesterday morning for Savannah to take part immedi itely in active businoss competition with the other pilot boats at Ty bee. The "Neca," while it her berth, has attracted numerous visitors (vho have all admired her beauty of model and slegant clipper-like appearance. Her nie manical work, in all departments, does great ire lit to the experts who have b tn engaged m her, and the enterprise of Capt. Usina is mtitled to praise for his commendable pat? ronage of home work, by which we think ho las secured a boat which, while sho will at ract general notice for her faultless appear mce, will be found eminently successful in 1er general suitability tr? the business for vhich she has bee-? oo':atructed. THE ORATORIO AT ST. PATRICK'S CHUECH. ["be Oratorio last night may be said to have >een a triumphant success, and the church was io crowded that the proceeds will doubtless be . substantial aid to the indefatigable gentle ucn who have the church in charge. Carto? n's Kyrie, with its quaint movements and ef? ectivo though abrupt transitions, was sung rith fluency and force. Florentmvs solo for oprauo wis next sung, and was follower by be Et in tara pax, which, was probably the ;em of the evening. In tho second part thc }ai lollis was rendered with great accuracy nd striking effect. A Ta ni um Ergo was gi v m in place of Cartoni's Trio, aud thc Oratorio mded with the Qwmiam, which is rich in hai aony and power. The music throughout was xceedingly difficult, aud its execution reflects auch credit upon the peiiormers. The lead ng soprano sang with the sweetness and neat icss of execution for which she is celebrated, nd the soprano singing in the Ta winn Ergo ras worthy of praise. Thc leadme tenor sang rith striking precision, ?nd added greatly to he success of the cvoniug. The chorusscs vere full aud accurate, and thc whole music vas as new to the hearers as it was graceful, irilliant and handsomely delivered. WARD NO. 7.-Citizens, be on your guard. Mend the meeting to night, aud see that the lunicipality receives no dominen:. THE THEATRE.-The good people of Charles - on will have no cause to complain of a dearth if amusements this whiter, as Mauager Tem? pleton is determined to make every effort to ?lease, and his success is uot problematical Ie has made arransromeuts with several dis inguislied actors from New York, and bis roupo will be one of the bosr that has ever ap >eared before a Charleston audience. A.-conic irtisthas beeu engaged, and the e.itiro stage larapbcrualia will be ?marge I and improved lefore the grand winier opening. Thc Vane listers, who are undoubted favorites, wiil con inue to nil the principal petitions, in which hey will be ably assist: d by tho Northern ac ois. The minstrels and the circus have no :ausc to regret their vis ii to Charle? iou, and i remains to bo seen if the legit?male drama viii not be as well supported by the pleasnrc icekers. Mr. Templeton is now arranging for lie exhibition of Mazeppa mi ler canvas, and viii foim a combination with L iwautle's Cacu6 br this purpose at au early day. Work for thc Ward Meetings. Cn.uiLESTox, S. C., October 31,1868. TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEWS. It has gladdened thc hearts of many of your readers to learn the action of thc Central Club at the meeting last night. Their preamble and resolutions exactly meet tho present slate of affairs in our city. Political principles arc in no way involved in our Municipal elee'ion? aud the SU?gctftio?s ol thc Central Club, thsi citizens irrespective of political bias should meet on Monday night for thc nomination of citizen caud dates, is eminently proper. With candidates who represent the intelli? gence and property of our city, and with tho exorcise of that energy, earnestness and hearty co-operation which tho occasion demands from every man having al heart the prosperity and best interest of Charleston, there is no reason why we should not elect the candidate of our own choice. Our time is short and our work plentiful; and the thorough organization of the forces already in thc field teaches the imperative necessity of prompt and zealous action on oar part. If the Wards at their meeting on Monday night will secure efficient momber3 for an Ex oculivo Committee, who shall be charged with all thc details of the coming election, and sec to it that the trust is confided ouiy to energet? ic, skilful hands, tho result of tho coming Mu? nicipal election will provo, unless we have greatly misjudged our people, that we have not forgotten our past, and arc not yet willing to transfer our eily and its vital interests to the tendor mercies of itinerants and strangers. i ASHLEY. A Card. To de Citizens' Nominating Conun'ion : At a time like the present, when the necessi? ty for having a candidtte for Mayor to repre? sent tho people at largo is appa-ent to all, it behooves us to inako such a selection as will unite all conflicting interests and sootlio all political differences. Captain Henry Gerdts, one of thc late Board of Aldermen and a well knowu merchant on East Buy, is fully capable of filling the responsible position of Mayor. Ho possesses thc respect and esteem of all who know him, and is the man for thc times. If elected ho would sock only tho cit v's good, and would prove acceptable to every TAX-PAYER. BUSLVKSS NOTICES.
