HUNT & SON will sell, at 10 o'clock, at theil- score, Meeting-street, boots, shoes, bro? gans, ?cc. ATTENTION, DEMOCRATS OF WARD 1.-The members of this Democratic Club and the property-holJcrs and tax-payer3 aro invited to attend a meeting of the club to-night, when ?business of importance will be transacted. ANOTHER BOY.-We mentioned some time since that the Bruderliche Bund had received a Knabe piano from Baltimore. The Freund Schafts Bund have ordered a piano from the same celebrated makers, and it is expected by .the next steamer. COBONER'S INQUEST.-Coroner Whiting yes? terday held an inquest on the body of James Brown, a colored man, who was found dead in his bed at No. 33 Warron-atreet. H ; had re? tired in apparent health tho night previous. The jory returned a verdict of death by visita? tion of God. IMPROVEMENTS TN THE MARKET.-That por? tion of the 'lower market which wr.s^formerly . occupied by the colored co3termongers, is be? ing purged from the smoke and filth that was .caused by these parties. The pavement has b3en thoroughly cleansed, and the walls treat? ed to several coats cf whitewash. THE BARNWELL SENTINEL. -Mr. Bronson, of | the Barnwell Sentinel, is in town for a fewdays, and will call on our merchants in relation to advertising. The Sentinal is the only paper published in that'section of country, and con? sequently affords a good medium of conimuni .cation with country merchants and farmers. Crrr COUNCIL-REOULAB MEETING-October 20.-Present, tho Mayor and Aldermen Potter, Lindstrom, Olnoy, Cade, Whilden, Voigt and McKinlay-9. There not being a quorum, tho?e members present adjourned to meet on Friday orening, .at seven o'clock. W. H. SMITH, Clerk of Council. ST. PAUL'S CHURCH, R A D CLII FEB OB o. -The vestry of thia church petitioned City Council, some time since, to repair the sidewalk on Coming-street, in front of the church. The petition was complied with, and the sidewalk repaired with sand. This does not seem to have answered tho desired purpose, and a num? ber of the congregation are anxious to know why the aspbaltum pavement, which has been so successfully tried in other parts of the city, was not laid down there also. A NUISANCE.-Since the ne<* plank road has een laid through Calhoun- reet to the North? eastern Railroad depot that poi rion at the head of Eu st Bay has become the rendezvous for numbera of vagrant boys, both white and colored. Tiiey have violated a city ordinance by using tba street as a play-grou?d, and the . noise made is a nuisance to the neighborhood. . If the police authorities would make a raid upon these juvenile offenders, it would be a salutary lesson that might produce a good re? sult. The war is over with its loud alarms, . and by all means "let us have peace."' EXPLOSION OP A PIPE.-Quite a consterna? tion was occasioned at Chisolm's Mill, yester? day, by the explosion of a small pipe connected with one of the boilers. A little steam and ?water were thrown into the packing rcom above the engine, where a numb jr of negro women were at work, and frightened them so badly that four of them jumped out of a win? dow, but fortunately none of them were injur e J. The damage was Boon repaired and work resumed, but not until the most exaggerated reports of the affair had been circulated in the .city._ MINIATURE BOAT RACE.-A regatta of a some? what singular character took place on the pond at the west end ol Broad-street, on Monday ; afternoon. Throe boats were entered, the largest boing about thirty inches in length. It was a closely contested race, as each craft was under fall sail. The point of the joko is that the boats were entered and their courses shaped by several legal and business gentle? men, whose staid appearance on Broad-street ?would not lead to the supposition that they could so unbind from their usual dignity. The race was witnessed by several delighted juve? niles, who constituted a part of the happy fam? ilies._ ORPHAN HOOBE ANNTVEBSABT_The anniver :aaty of the Charleston Orphan House occurs on the eighteenth of October; but on account .of the eighteenth falling this year on Sunday, the celebration was postponed until Tuesday the twentieth. Accordingly yesterday, after the usual examination and school exercises, which did credit to both teachers and pupils, a bountiful dinner was served for the little ones. The dining hall was handsomely decorated, and with its bevy of har>py juvenile gourmands presented an interesting and attractive scene. There arc now about three bundled and thirtv children in the Orphan House, the larger part .of whom were present at the examination and .dinner, and their personal appearance spoke -well for both the steward aud the matron. BonBEBiEs TN CHSIST CHUBCE_A number of robberies have taken place in Christ Church . lately under circumstances that render it doubtful whether any cotton will be brought to market from that parish, except in small par? cels tied up in the coats or blankets of freed? men. On tho night of the 18th inst, tho cotton house of Dr. J. E. Dawson and Mr. Joseph Thomlinson was broken open, and about seven hundred pounds of seed cotton, which was all that was on the plantation, was stolen. The thieves gained entrance to the building by rip? ping off the hinges of the windows and carried the cotton out in tho same way. A few nights before that the cotton house of Mr. Ferdinand Gregorio was broken open and fifty pounds of seed cotton stolen. These Christ Church robbers, however, do not confine their atten? tions to the fleecy staple, bat make love tr? the live stockas well. Cn the same ni^i<,that Mr. Gregorio's cotton house was broken open, Mr. Mosos Whitosides lost three turkeys and eleven ducks, and Mr. Samuel Riley and Mr. Richard Jervey wore each robbed of the only milch cow which they owned. A corps of detectives might be useful in Christ Churc'j, provided they were allowed to go well armod and to use their arms when oo ? - casion ren lered it necessary. No clue has been discovered to the perpetrators of any of the above robberies, except that their tracks show that they were negroes. THE RANDOLPH MCBDEB-THE LNQUEST AND VEBJICT-THE BCBIAL_The Columbia Pheo? nix, of yesterday, says : "Randolph, the col? ored senator, was buried in Columbia, Sunday aiternoon, aud bia- funeral was largely attend? ed by h?3 colored friends and admirers. The African Methodist Episcopal Church, corner of Taylor and Sumter streets, where the funeral services wore performed, was densely thronged. Eulogies wore pronounced over the dead man by three of his colored friends, after which a procession was formed and marched to the cemetery, where the body was interred. We omitted to state in our notice on Suuday morn? ing:, that an inquest was held over tho body at Hodge's Dep-'t (or Cokesbury, as it is general? ly termed, although Cokesbury proper is noar lv two miles off), and a verdict rendered that the deceased came to his untim?ly end at the hands of threo persons unknown to the jury. Individuals who were on the ground at the time of the occurrence, say that as soon as tho tembl? act was committed the partier mount? ed theil" horses aud rode off." IN CHAMBERS, BEFOBE MB. JUSTICE WIL? LARD.-James Cosgrove ads. Richard M. But? ler. A motion at Chambers to set aside judgment. This case was argued lost week before Justice Willard, when the foliowin; eynopsis was published in THE NEWS : In the last January term of thc Court of | Common Pleas, a case of trover, for the re? covery of a horse, was tried before Judge F. J. Moses. Mr. R. M. Butler claimed a horse in the possession ot Mr. James Cosgrove, and suit was brought to obtain the same. John Phil? lips, Esq.", appeared for Mr. Butlor, and M. P. O'Connor for Mr. Cosgrove. The case was de? cided in favor of the plaintiff, and an appeal being taken, the decision of the lower court was sustained. The Sheriff was ordered to pro? ceed, but the defendant referted thc matter to the military authorities, who commande ! the proceedings stayed UDtil further orders. No action was then "laken until the readmission of | tho State into the Union, whon Mr. Coserovo placed the caso m the hands of D. T. Corbin, Esq. An injunction was then obt tined by Mr. Corbin to stay the judgment, and a rule was served on Mr."Phillips to show cause why the judgment should not be vacated. A return to this rule was made by Mr. Phillips, and the case was argued before Ju?tico Willard in Chambers. The different features of the case wore re viewed by Justice Willard yesterday, and the conclusion of his decision, he stated "that it ber/fcme unimportant to confider whether th cause of action on which tho judgment was founded arose at the dato of the defendant purchase of the horse, or at tho tims of tb plaintiff's demand, and the motion of tho de fendant was denied." All classes of citizens will agree that it is ot vital importance that in nomi? nating candidates for Aldermen, the best men in the community-men of integrity, in? telligence and experience-should bc selected. And it is also important that the diff?re ut in? terests in the community should be recognized. In making up your tickets for Aldermen, thc claims jf thc Getmau and Irish clement of the community-the mechanic, the doctor, the merchant and the lawyer-should be consider? ed. And how will you reach the desired end ? Certainly not by selecting your candidates at the different ward meetings, as is contemplated by a portion ot orj citizens. Who can guaran? tee that either ward will put a German in nomination; and how can it be arranged thar a preponderance of either das? will not be nominated, if there is not concert of action among them all? We answer that, in our opin? ion, it should be done by a committee selectod from all the wards-tho same plan adopted in the selection of a candidate for Mayor, and then we can hope for success. MANY TAX-PAYERS. THE THEATSE.-The rain last night prevent? ed a large attendance at the theatre, but those who brared the elementa were more than sat? isfied with the dramatic treat that was fur? nished. Pocahontas is one ol' the most amus" ing farces that has ever been introduced on the otage. It is replete with wit and humor, and the actors sustained their parts admirably. After this play there was an equally amusing presentation of a tin cup to the ugliest mau in the audience. In consequence o? the smail number ot' ladies present, no cake was distrib? uted. The Taming of the Shrew closed Ibo entertainment. The performance of the or? chestra was particularly pood throughout. We trust that the woather will soon improve, and the Templeton Troupe receive the encourage? ment of lull houses every night. BUSINESS NOTICKS.
