A FTBEMAN'S OFFEBTN?.-We have been fa? vored with a peep at a magnificent silver trum? pet to be presented tn ono of the presidents of the Fire Department, but- "who the lucky recip? ient wili be, is, aa yet, a mystery. Whiidea & Co.'a es? tablishment, wfcero tho argentiferous horn was deposited, was yesterday the centre ot attrac? tion. Ic is of the full size, elegantly chased and embossed, and wiil be supporte'! by a heavy bullion cord ami cassel. This beautiful specimen of artietic'skillwill remain at Messrs. -W. G. Whilden & Oo.s for a few days. We hazard * guess that the lucky recipient of the trumpet will be the popular president of one of the steam companies who will carry th6 swamp fox wherever the fire fiend rages the fiercest. When the d ogs are manned for the next parado we Bhall see-if our surmise is correct. CoKSTjatprtoN OF FEUTTLIZEBS.-In a printed :6tcer from Mr. William M. Lawton, of fchiB city, addressed to Messrs. Elston & Co.. cot? ton brokOi-3 of Now York, setting forth hi-j vie ws concerning oottou culture in tba Sjuth, we find the following paragraph : Another striking evidence of Southern agri? cultural poverty is furnished io the very small quantity of ^fertilizers used this season by the farmers. Ont? of the largest factors of this city told the writer on yesterday that be hod purchased last year for planters two thousand tons, but thia year ouly two hundred tons. Another factor, who paid for fertilizers for last year's crop $40,000, will not pay two thousand uollare thiB year. Thia is the case generally in all the Atlantic cotton States. Nor will the freedmen be induced to eollect the ordinary plantation manures, as they were required to do under the old system of farming. In their vanity of ideas they have ever discarded the conception of scientific Agricultural application of manure. . FINE POTATOES.-Sin oe the subject of raising vegetables for the Northern markets has been brought prominently to. tho attention of the community, the farmers in thu vicinity of the city have spared no pains to prodace early crops. Fertilizers have beeo used more lavish? ly than before, and the yield has fully equalled the expectations. The material from the old nitre beds has proved to be one of the best fer? tilizers, and admirably adapted to the cultrre bf. potatoes. Mr. J. E>. Brown, a practical far? mer Of large experience near the oity, has shown us some specimens of the Cosco (Irish) potatoes grown by him on his place at Potter's Field. These, we learn, have yielded forty barrels to one of s e ; d planted. Tae potato in question is rather over the full size, with a clear skin, and when properly cooked would form a dish fit to sit before a king. The Cosco is a new variety, and Mr. Brown attribute? his large yield principally to the use of the nitre bed fertilizer. H?rer, ABBIYALS-JOLY2.-Chjrletlon Hotel. Langston, Darlington._ THE CHESTEE STAND AND AND THE SOUTH CAE OLIN A KAXLBOAD.-On two occasions lately the Chester Standrrd has published articles stating'that tho South Caio'ina Railroad rates between Now York and Chester, and between Charleston and CLoster, discriminated against Charleston. The last article was in answer to the reply of THE NLWB to thc first communica? tion of the Standard's correspondent. The explanation of THE NEWS, waa so folland conoiusive that little remains tobe saids unless correspondents will insist upon having their own views of railroad tariffs, rates, ?sc., adopted, ia the place of the published rates by which the road is guided. The Standard, inreferring to the articles out of the sLipinent of which tho first piece origi? nated, designates thom os stones instead of hollow ware-but ibo misnomer wis wholly, unim? portant os they ore b^h.classod and charged alike. Hollowware, on the South Carolina Rail? road tariff from New York to Chester, is class? ed first-class and charged double ?r-t; one hundred pounds would bo, therefore. $2- 45. The same articles from Charleston is classed first-class and charged fiist; one hundred pounds would be 85c. If this is discriminating against Charleston, it is a carious modo of ac 2omplishing it. In making his complaint, the writer of Qie arbole in the standard quotes tho General Superintendent's published ratos from New York. It is hardly necessary to Bay that these rates ure by steamship, as the South Carolina Railroad has DO Northern connection per rail. ?_.
