MOSE ABOUT THE DILL MTTRDEB.-We lei from a gentleman who "left Camden after i murder of Dill that four arrests of white n had been made by tho military, and they wi incarcerated at Camden. The parties arrest were Mr. Lemuel Parker and son, Dr. 01< and Mr. William Kelley. These persons i charged with having fired into Dill's houi killing him and a negro man instantly, ? wounding Dill's wife seriously. The criden so far is only circumstantial, but has be deemed sufficiently strong to cause th? arrest. . - Dill was a member of the Bepublican pari i and had made himself very officious in abnsii the Democrats. '.'. Public mee tings were held i both parties, and Dill tried to prevent the n groes from affiliating with the Democrats I informing them that they would all bo pc 8 on ed. The general, desiri expressed 09 them being that every effor should be made to detect the guilty, but thal .the innocent should not suffer. On Tuesday an inquest was held over th? dead bodies by J. K. Witiierspoon, who render? ed the following verdict : That the partie; came.to their death from gunshot wound' in the hands of persona, to the jory unknown, , On Sunday the bodies of Dill and Ellison were brought over to Camden, and funeral ser? vices performed in the colored Methodist Church, after which they were interred, the former in the white and the latter in the color? ed burial ground. The funeral procession was a very large one, c imposed exclusively of blacks. - , . , . , On Monday afternoon a detachment of United States soldiers arrived, the object of whose visit, wo are informed, is to detect, if possible, the perpetrators of the murder. Arrests have been made of-several respecta? ble white men, merely upon suspicion. We do not know upon what grounds the suspicion is based, or what disposition is to be made of the parties arrested, but feel confident not a tittle of evidence can be produced to connect them with the perpetration of tho deed. We hope that the perpetrators of this crime will be discovered, and we heartily say, "Fiat justina nutt coetum J" 1 , REPOST OF THE CHIEF OF THE FIRE DEPABT MEST.-We are indebted to Chief M. H. Nathan for a copy of his annual report to April 28,1868. The report was printed by Mr. J. W. McMU lan, ari is a neat, specimen of typography. It is full and complete in all of its details, giving much interesting information about the de? partment. The city has been singularly fa? vored during the last year, as the loss by uro was comparatively small. There were twenty four fires and twenty-three alarms, and the losses paid by the insurance companies are but $80,717, which is $86,494 less than the sum paid the previous year; $25,000 of this sum was losjt by the burning of the steamer Kate, the vessel being cut from her moorings before the arrival of the department. The amount paid to the several companies for services at fires is only $8550, a decrease of $6846 25 on last year's payment. Of this sum the average is $648 to each of the white and $159 to each of the colored compa? nies. Notwithstanding the general stagnation in every circle; the Fire Department has pre? served its record as one of the most efficient and beet conducted in the Union, and a credit to the "City by the Sea." Chief Nathan's re? port is a resume of the operations of the De? partment during the past year, and is replete with interest to ali firemen. The most diminutive darkies are selected for this purpose, and when seen together, half naked, and as blaok as Erebus, they form an admirable subject for ai white washer. Yesterday two of these waifs of | black humanity were seen in a gutter in Mid-; die-street, pillowed in each others armB like the babes in the wood, and sleeping soundly. They attracted considerable attention, but none were hard-hearted enough to disturb their rest, and they? slumbered on unconscious of the busy world around them. The group-! ing was admirable; one had "rested bis head upon a lap of earth," while-the other reclined against the curb. To the Editor of the Daily News : In the past two or three weeks there have appeared in the Courier and Mercury notices commendatory of an early closing movement during the summ er months. What was sug? gested: in those notices came right borne to 'me, and I was in hopes that our business men might be induced to act on the suggestions set forth; but nothing has been done further than closing at 2 P. UV on Saturdays. This is something gained, but, BO far as I have beard, no houses have fallen into the plan of Messrs. J. E. Adger & Co. and C. Graveley. I think that our business men, wholesale, retail and all, are blind to their own interest in this matter. A little relaxation granted themselves and em? ployees during the relaxing, enervating sum? mer months, would render them, physically and mentally, more efficient when work is to be done. Your office being in the very centre of business, you can judge for yourselves how, much is done after 6 P. M., and how easily thc stores can be closed at that hour BB far as busi? ness is concerned. I have taken the liberty of | trying to enlist your sympathies in behalf of a very large class of business men who earnestly desire this change, boping that you may, through the columns of your paper, bring tho matter before the mercantile community.
