Tho slight rain of Tuesday morn Jng increased by night, and at ten o'clock it seemed . as if the windows of Heaven were opened and the - floods had descended upon the earth. In the north? eastern portion nf the city the streots bordering on ? ?the river were, completely submerged, and pedestri? ans were compelled to swim and wade before they ?could reach their destination. The fan of water was greater ?han has before, been recorded in the ssme. .length of time, ?nd during twenty-four hours showed a total depth of four and ? half Inches. I THE COASTWISE TRADE or CHARLESTON by --Steam bas received a great. Impetus since the war, -and ls managed with marked energy and tact by the ? enterprising firms which are its representatives. Wo gladly hail every accession to our steam?hip fleet; and it is with much pleasure that we are enabled ito announce that the fine steamer Proms thens, -?which has lately received a thorough overhauling ?and. refitting, vr?l leave Philadelphia on. the 13th instant for Charleston, and_thereafter ply regularly .between this port and the "City of Brotherly Love." . Messrs. John and Theo, Getty ore the agents of the newline, and we are glad to hear it mtimated that ; their fine'New York steamers, the Moneta and the -Souder, wffl, before long."be running regularly to .S?w 3 ort " --. - CROPS IN DABLINGTON AND MARION.-The : Marion Star, cf yesterday, says : "From every por ? Hon of the Pea. Dee, section we hear flattering anden ' couraging reports of tho crops. While in many in ? . Btsnoe* neither the com nor cotton is as forward as -.is wu1 at this season heretofore, yet the plant hasa -healthy and vigorous appearance, and our planters 'feel much elated." The Florence Gazette baa the following: "Reports .from sB perts of the district concur in the statement .-.that the crop?, though backward from the late spring - and heavy rains, are looking weD, and If the seasons are favorable promise v large yield- Cotton, weare . glad to learn, has boen planted very sparingly. Our > farmers are more hopeful, and the laborers are work? ing better thanlaat year " THE CZBOITS TENT PROSTRATED-A TRAGIC ? EVENT.-The heavy wind and rain of Tuesday night proved tod much for the giant pavilion of the New Orleans Circus, and the canvas blew, flapped and . strained in such a manner that the managers loosen? ed the ropes and drew it down. Unfortunately the spot selected f r the show is the lowest on the camp? us, and the water settled around the tent and ren? dered navigation somewhat difficult. The ?TiT?lr objected seriously to being exposed to the weather, -and testified their disapprobation by sundry growls, but they were not heeded until a Brazilian tiger | made a dash on an African leopard in : he same cage -and soon reconstructed the un'ortunate animal The tiger was evidently alarmed at the unusual warring . -of the elements, and was in such a stew him; elf that ? he made a hash of his companion. ^ A CLAIM FOB DAMAGES.-The Wilmington -Journal, of yesterday, says : "Colonel J. W. Atkin. ? son returned to the city yesterday, afttr an absence .of savers! days in Charleston, whither lie bas been," -as already announced, in prosecution, as one of the - agents, of the claim preferred by the steamship -James A. Gary for damages against the steamship Sherman. We learn .from him that the matter came "-op before the United States Commissioner m Charle'ion. The depositions of Captain Hall and .the captain of the Sherman and those of other wit- j noeses were taken. Upon these depositions the case will be ti fed in the United States District Court, to | . -meet ia a few weeks, over which Chief Justice Chase is expected to preside, and where the matter will bc "nally adjudicated.
