Nos. street. [advt] THE ELECTION.-CODtrary to the expectation both of the dvil ona military authorities, the elec? tion in the city yesterday was unmarked by any dis? turbance worthy of notice. At nine o'clock last evening not more than ten arrests were reported as the result of the day's watchfulness, and these were made on the principle that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, rather than as a punishment for a vicious disturbance of the peace. The principal localities of excitement were the" Washington Engine Hou6e in Ward 6, and the Court? house in Ward 2. In both of these places there was angry contention in the early part of the day, but by judicious management on the part of the police, the excitement was quelled before blows were passed, and our reporter was unable to record a bloody nose ora broken head. It was not known to the community at large, that, as a measure of precaution, Col. Bomford, the Commandant of the Post, had quietly, in squads of j two's and three's, congregated ? foroe of men in such localities as seemed likely to breed the greatest dis? cord. With the exception cf these passing detach? ments not a bayonet was to be seen during the day. At an early hour lt was ascertained that much oi the wordy contention around the polls was caused by ignorant and offidoua persons, who as su ned to de? cide for the managers upon the merits of each doubt? ful voter. To put a stop to this, Col. Cogswell au? thorized the appointment of throe challengers in behalf of the respective candidates, with instructions to abide by the decisions of the managers in all cases, and instructions to the police to enforce the same without fear or favor. This arrangement very quickly quelled all symptoms of disturbance, and those who were ready Tor a row were compelled to ignominiously subside, or accept the alternative of a bunk in the guardhouse. * The amount of whiskey consumed yesterday was wonderful. Where rt came from or by whom it was dispensed are secrets known only to the initiated; but it told in hundreds of flushed faces and bloodshot eyes-in noisy ejaculations and wandering legs. The foreign vote was particularly strong, and perhaps a greater endeavor was made to secure it than on any previous occasion. Mr. E. W. M. Mackey visited the upper wards fre? quently, but seemed particularly attached to the Eagle Engine House, where many of his constituents were gathered. His heart, no doubt, warmed at the sight of the faithful few, and, loosening his purse string?, he invested in pindars and treated the crowd. The dusky voters munched the nats, but kept their counsel and voted as they thought best Towards dinner time the crowd, of voters dwin? dled some whit, and the hard-worked managers were allowed time to moisten, their clay and demolish the crackers and cheese furnished by the candidates. The heaviest voting was done in the morning, and few persons came forward" after 2 o'clock. The results in the dry are given below. There suits in the country are yet unknown, but rumors reach ns from Christ Church Parish and Wadmalaw Island that a raid was made upon the ballot-boxes, and they were destroyed by the friends of the Radical nominee. .Similar demonstrations ate said to have been made a^d checked on John's and Edi s to Islands, where Cap tam Sigwald is understood to be ahead. Aman ls said to have been shot in Berkeley Dis? trict but of the circumstances we know nothing. On the whole,' we may congratulate ourselves that an occasion of so much, excitement between the races has passed without trouble, and that whoever may be elected wfll not AB an office whose doorsteps have been stained with blood. After 6 P. M. last night, tho managers declared the polls dosed, and proceeded to count the votes. There waa no opposition to the Radical ticket in the case of j any office bot that of sheriff, and the votes were counted carefully, showing the following result : Mackey. Sigwald. Hastie. One precinct in Berkeley District known as the 16-Mile Church, polled 219 votes for Mackey and two for Ha'tie. The attention of smokers is called to a new brand of Smoking Tobacco, "NERVINE TOBACCO," manufactured solely by C. MADSEN. It is Tobacco from which the nicotine, in great part, has been extracted, and is thereby made a very wholesome article for smokers. It retains all the fine flavor of the Havana without its injurious and nerve-exciting properties. Tobacco con tain mg nicotine largely acts powerfully upon the nerve centres, and is therefore very prejudicial to health, causing nervous tremor, headache, dyspepsia, Ac, but the "NERVINE TO? BACCO" can be smoked in any quantity without the least effect or injury to your constitution. As to its perfect safety, I can refer to Ute statement of the undersigned gentlemen, Professors and Doctors in Medicine, who have made an examination of the same. It is sold in pound and half pound packages, and in two qualities : No. 1 at $1 per pound; Fine (2dj at 75 cents per pound. I osiers allowed 25 cents dis? count per pound when buying twenty-five pounds and upwards. We nave examined the specimens of '-NERVINE TOBACCO" put into our hands by Mr. C.
