THE OPENTSO OF THE YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION FATE.-If any one has doubted the truth that "when a woman will, she will," fcc, he should have visited the Hibernian Hall last evening and relieved his mind by looking upon the master? piece of taste whioh the fair hands of the sex fabri? cated for the delectation of the public, in the shape of tho Fair of the Young Men's Christian Associa? tion. Had a recipe for beauty been borrowed from the fairy world it could scarcely rival in results thatj which the ladiesUBed on the present occasion, with] their mundane appliances, to produce a scene whose only fault was that it bewildered the spectator with its lovely confusion. Take gems of art and industry ; the bijoux of the boudoir and the creations of the cook, the frost-work of tho sewing room and the daintiest design of the artisan; mix together, shake up whole basxetsful of evergreen and Spanish moss, then empty the heaped up contents of a score of flow? er gardens, sprinkle a melted rainbow over the entire concoction, and distribute to suit the fancy. Such briefly describes the manner in which the ladies have combined the elements of beauty and taste to make Hibernian Hall a sort of grotto, with real live houris for attendants. j To enter more into part culara, you pass from tbe sidewalk through an arched transparency on which in lighted letters are the words, "Young Men's C. A. Fair," thence to the door of the hall, where the scene that meets the eye is one surpassingly hand? some. From the four great chandeliers huge fes? toons of flowers and evergreen converge to the cen? tre of the room, and terminate in a great floral basket. Directly below this is an octagonal-shaped structure all of flowers, moss and green, from three sides of which, peeping through wreaths, the pretty faces of divinities in crinoline remind yon that they .re the postmistresses of the entire establishment- | only ten cents a letter, -and s fresh mao opened every minute. On the sides of the room are arrang? ed the tables, not unhxe the manner of the recent Catholic Fair. The iron ' scroll-work of Werner still r.--mains, but its fresh covering of roses acd moss the greater variety of taste displayed in the embellish? ments, the more lavish use of floral baskets, wreathes and arches, lend'new attractions to the arrangement. Two or three tables are aitignod to the respective denominations, and every other one of these tables is assigned to the uses of refreshments. We com? mence our inspection, on the right as we enter the hail Here is the department nf Grace Church. The decoration is exquisite. The corner appears to be lost in flowers, from. among which voices come, so sweet that they immediately tempt an appetite for he* i MTee, Hext is the fancy table, united to its neight - ?y .tn arch, from which hangs a floral pen? dant Ii bxa<i Claus had emptied his Ohristmas stores, the toys could not be more abundant Every? thing is la miniature except the handsome ladies who smile the greenbacks out of a family man'a pocket in a most demoralizing manner. Trinity Church tables are next in line. The ole gent pyramid of French art iflclal flowers, which all Ohsrltston has seen on the Vigilant eagine, rests on the centre of toe table, and around it are scattered, in generous profusion, the tributes of a hundred tan? ban d s in every possible shape that sduors and needle can work. A thing with an unpronounceable name, which permits the curious to look clean through a solid brick, is among the many attractions of this table. Passing on, the fragrance of an enor? mous bunch bf bsnanas draws your nose point blank in the direction of the refreshments, and the other senses then discover what an admirable array of viands have been provided for the occasion. The Baptist tables next attract attention. The portraits of the Rev. Dis. Winkler and Manly are prominently displayed, and all around are distribu? ted beautiful things, ia the shape of albums, chil? dren's clothing, vaser, dolls. Atc, atc, kc. Among the choice articles is some very beatiful work in pal? metto, sneh. as frames for cards, an ingenious repre? sentation of a pond with a palmetto tree growing, and an arbor In which reposes the Goddess of Liber? ty, so called. A miniature bed with sU its surround? ings is very pretty, and ahnest makes one wish him? self a very diminutive incant, that he may enjoy ita luxuries. Then follow refreshments, and a fairy grotto. The latter is the headquarters of the grab bag department The pillars are hung with presents for the little ones. Thestops to tbs stags are surmounted by a beaut! fol arch in scroll work, on the opposite or left side of ! which, as we move around the hall, is a pair of ? scale*, covered with evergreens and flowers, where the pounds averdu pc ls of the curious are marked to an ounce. Next come the?taree tables of Dr. Smyth's church-refreshment .and' fancy. Very handsome and recherche. The old woman who lived in a shoe, a sewing machine, a French rotary ice cream freezer -a funny thing, elegant embroidery and all sorts of knick-knacks are the attractions here. {? Dr. Glrardeau's congregation have likewise a very tempting department, whioh testifies the industry and taste of the ta-Jles, and the genero ti ty of friends. A tall silver palmetto fruit stand is one or the richest ad rumen ts of the hall. Coffee, ice cream, sherbets, ambrosial drinks, cold 'am and cake keep a man's mouth too busy even for the compliments deserved. En passant wo should not negloct mention of a book table, where one can supply htopew with everything, from a tract to a hymn-book or Bible. Three tables, devoted to the Lutheran Churches of Rev. Messrs. Muller, Bowman and Bachman, teim?? nate the attractive list All of these .are like their neighbors, handsomely adorned, heavily freighted, and thoroughly illustrative of the good taste of the fair managers by whom they wore supplied. The cakes, boquete, and pyramids of jellies, are beauties, to say nothing of the extensive bill of fare with which the ladies coax a customer into on epicurean alliance wi th^the church. The bind of tho 6th Regiment was in attendance during the evening, the crowd was large, the expen? diture of mosey healthy, tho tatties beautiful, and, altogether, the first night of the Fair was a decided succees. Few left the room without a glance at tl io four evergreen letters over the door, Y. M. C. A., and in their hearts determining to accept the invitation, which they were evidently Intended to extend, "Yon Must Come Again." "Be Can? did," I would state that, if elected sheriff, and am re? quired to enter upon the duties of tho office before the State is admitted, I would refuse to qualify if the test oath be required. I have good reason to believe, however, that before I shall be required to qualify, the disabilities will be removed, and the oath known as the "iron clad," re? ferred to by your correspondent, will be dispensed with by the governing powers. . On this understanding, I am a candidate. Yours, very respefltfully, C. B. SIGWALD. The City Property and Taxation. To the Editors of the News: Last week there was an adrettlsement in your valuable paper stating that some city property was for sale. That is the last we have heard of it As a tax payer I would like our city fathers to enlighten us on this subject Are we going to remedy matters ? I see we are building new engine houses. Why not sell' out the old and useless property of the city ? Or are we to be (axed for both ? We are taxed heavily enough now without having any ad? ditional burdens imposed upon us. As I have not seen any record of this small matter in the Council proceedings, I deem it due to the citizens that we should have a little more light cn this sub? ject A TAX PAYER. BUSINESS NOTI?ES. In 1817 the great grand principle of etopping the most excruciating pain in an instant without em? ploying such dangerous agents as Chloroform, Opium, Morphine, Acon?ne, Ether, Ac, was first made known in RADWAY'S READY RELIEF. This remedy accomplished this wonderful and de? lightful desideratum in all cases of external and in? ternal pam. In an instant it afforded relief, the moment lt was applied to the parts ot the body where Inflammation or pam existed-ft at once re? lieved the patient of the moat violent and excruciat? ing pangs and throbs of pain, and imparted the de? lightful sensation of ease and comfort. Every kind of pain, whether Rheumatism. Neu? ralgia, Toothache, Pal .s in the Chest, Side, Lungs. Stomach, Bowels, Kidneys, Spine, Legs, Arms, Feet one application was sufficient to kill and extern ina ie the paim Taken internally, twenty drops to a teaspoonful would cure, and will cure, Asiatic Cholera, Fever and Ague, Chills and Fever, Billons Colic, Inflam? mation of the Bowels, Cramps, Spasms, Diarrhoea, Dysentery, and every pain that may exist in the in? side of man, woman or child; this was RADWAY'S READY RELIEF of 1847, and it le BADWA?'S RE? We then started it in its mission of relieving the infirm, pain-stricken, sick, distressed and crippled of all nations throughout the world, and now to-day it is used patronized and revered ae a household necessity, Th the palaces of Sultans, Emperors, Kaimos, Kings, High Priests, Nobles, os well as in the cottages of the laboring classes of every nation on the face of the earth. CONGESTION OF THE LUNGS CURED IN THIRTY MINUTES I Important to .Know how to Use "Rad. way's Ready Relief" in Acate and Dangerons Attacke! MT OWN CASE. On Saturday night, the 19th, I was violently seized with Congestion of the Lungs.
