On John's Island the total vote cast during the three days was 870. Of thia aggregate, which included only two white voters, and not a single vote against tho consti? tution, CC. The mem? bers of the different companies are generally familiar with their location, but it has been thought best to prepare new plats of each ward, which will be distributed among the sev? eral engine companies. Mr. Barbot, the city engineer, has this matter in charge, and the old maps will be revised and new plats drawn .that will give a correct statement of every well pnmp and tidal drain opening in each ward. THE SALE OF THE BEAU.-Notwithstanding the disagreeable weather, a number of persons assembled at Messrs. Badenhop k Co.'s saloon yesterday to witness the sale of their old fa? vorite, the bear. Mr. Wm. Knox, of the firm .of Campbell, Knox & Co., was th? auctioneer, .and his long acquaintance with "Coffee" ena? bled him to present bim to the assembled com? pany under the most favorable aspect. The .bids were opened at $15, but rapidly increased until Bruin was knocked down to a Captain Willis for $42. It is understood that Cu fie a's new owner will take him to Barnum's Museum, where he will be exhibited as one of the na? tives of the unreconstructed States. ST. MASS'S FATS.-The hall in Meeting-street, -opposite Pinckney, is nightly crowded, and the Fair has proved in every particular a great success. The room has been very tastefully .decorated, and the different tables and .booths vie with each other in their attractive? ness. All of the time honored customs that are known to fair goers are rigidly observed, .and both the postoffice and the fortune teller are extensively patronized, while the grab bags are flitting in every direction. The en? tire management of the Fair is deserving ol great credit. Each table is supplied with every delicacy in season, and the array of fancy ar? ticles is sufficiently tempting to induce the .greenbacks to leave their hiding places. DEATH OF CATTAIN HABTSTENE, LATE OF THE UNITED STATES NAVT.-Captain Henry J. Hart ,-atene, formerly of the United States navy, died in Paris on the 80th of March of paralysis. This officer, it will be remembered, made the cele? brated voyage to the Arctic Ocean in search of Dr. Kane and Sir John Franklin, and was suc? cessful in finding Dr. Kane and bringing him home. Subsequently, he was entrustad by -government with the complimentary duty of .returning the Resolute, one of the British Arc? tic discovery fleet, which was found abandoned and adrift at se?, to Queen Victoria, after the ship had been put in thorough repair by this government. Captain Hartstene was a South Carolinian by birth, and retired to Europe on the breaking out of the war. UNITED STATES COUBT-Hos. GEO. S. The following petition for citizenship wa granted ; Ferdinand Leopold Schnell CITY IMXBOVEMESTS.-The water lot in Cal houn-8treet, at the head ot' East Bay, which has long been a uuisanco to the neighborhood, is now being transformed, and will soon bo converted :nto a valuable piece of property. It was recently pur.hised by a Mr. Morrisey, who has obtained permission from the city to uso the sweepings of the streets for the pur? pose of fillinfr the lot. He hVbuilt a wooden trunk through the tract, and established a thorough drainage, which will prevent the tide from flowing into the premises as hereto? fore. In diggins a passage for the trunk, the laborers discovered an old drain that was not laid down on Che city charts. This improvement is a subject of gratifica? tion to the neighborhood, as the lot in ques? tion has been suspected of breeding pestilence, a green, malarious mould being almost con? stantly present, and the water thai collected from the tides and rain falls remained until it became stagnant. We learn also that the city engineer has been authorized to survey aud lay out a route by which farmers living beyond the marsh inlet, in the northwestern part of the city limits, may reach the market with their produce by a more direct road than that which they are now compelled to take. The improvement contem? plates the extension of Simons-street, and the construction of a causeway over the marsh in? let, which will 6ave many rods of travel to par? ties living in that neighborhood. It is under? stood that these changes will be commenced at an early dav. The farmers in that section have agreed to contribute labor to effect the desired improvement. We notice that in varions parts of the city sidewalks ire being relaid and the embroidery done in shell work by General Gilmore upon the property of our citizens is being rapidly effaced. The cobble stones in several streets are being removed and relaid, and a uniform grade established. The traies of the recent fire in Warren street, near King, have been completely oblite? rated.
