She has sixteen stato rooms, and is well fitted upiu every particular. PLATFORMS AGAIN.-Since the platform ordi nanco was first unearthed there haw boen a number of charges preferred, but no fines have ns yet been imposed. In many of the cases brought before the Mayor tho parties have claimed that tho sidewalks in trout of their houses were on a level with the street, and being unprotected by a curb no platform was necessary- This excuso has, in every in stanco, boou considered valid, and tho street inspector requested to furnish tho necessary curbing. Mayor Bums seems determined to rulo over a model city. THE WHOLE HOG OR NOSE.-Messrs. Jeffords & Co. yesterday hung their shingle on the outer walls of their now stores ou Vonduo Range, which proceeding may be considered as * an intimation that they will 6oon take posses? sion of the premises. Tho now sign is an elaborate specimen of the artistic skill ol' Mr. C. W. Stdes. Besides tho name ol thc firm, which appears in bold letters, ?ure is an ex? cellent representatiun of a lull grown porker a significant allusion to thc public that Messrs. Tho new store, which has al? ready been described in these columns, is rapidly approaching cuniplctiou, and will soon be tenanted by tho proprietors. THE YACHT CLUB.-A called meeting of tho J yacht ownezs ar.d others, who r.ish to form a club, wiil bo held to-night at Daytou's r:stau rant, aud a full attendance is earnestly request? ed. There aro many in our community who take an interest in this subject, and who would willingly unite themselves with un enterprise o ' th's description. Our pleasure flotilla is constantly increasing, and if tho proper steps ure taken, there is no reason why Charleston should not in. time boast a handsome yacht squadron. Messrs. Marsh & Brother are now building a yacht which will bc forty feet deck, twenty-five foot eleven inches keel, r.nd about five feet deep. Sho will bc a counterpart of the Eleanor. Mr. Jones, Charleston's famed boat builder, has als^ a fine yacht, which will be ready for launchiug in a few days. Bcjides these now vessels' there aro a number that havo already seen service. Tho Kate,"tho Ruse, the Eleanor, and the M.iggio Mitchell,-wit ii others equally well known, already form a re? spectable squadron. Charleston harbor is ad? mirably adapted for the sport of yachting, aud it is boped that the meoting to-night will be fully attended. REV. DB. IXUMMEK.-This venerable and be? loved ?iviuo beliverod a most eluquent and powerful sermon beiorc the ?oung Men's Christian Association, last Sunday evening, in the Second Presbyterian Church, nis text ?wa3 from tho 2d Epistb of Peter, first chapter and sixt jcnth verse: ''For wo hr.vo not followed cunningly devised fabler." Notwithstanding the inclemency of thc weather, quito a largo audi nco was in attendance-as, indeed, there generally is whenever public services ar ? held under thc auspices of this association-an for nearly an hour and a half the venerable minis? ter held them completely enchained by tho power of his argument, and tho earnestness of Us manner. As ho stood in front of ,he au? dience (for, at the close of the preparatory ser? vice, before commencing his sermon, ho cane down from the pulpit), with his Bilver-whito hair and long flowing beard, roaching nearly to his waist, also of silver-whiteness, ho seemed like one ol' the old prophets returned to thc earth to prove by his appearance as weil as by his arguments thai he hal not spent a lifetime in following "cunningly devised fables." but thc Gospel ho preached and believed was, indeed, given "by inspiration of God. ' We are pleased to learn that the Doctor has promised to return to tho city later iu tho sea? son and preach a series of sormons before, tho Young Men's Christian Association, whon our citizens may have another opportunity of hear? ing bim. PROMENADE ENTERTAINMENT.-Thc ladi Trinity Church will give to-morrow anrlT! day overling apromonado entertainment ti hall ovor tho Adams Express Company, have spared no pains to make this one o events of the season. Tho post band has engaged, and the tables and booths wi furnished and decorated in the most ar mauger. Tho object proposed in one should enlist the sympathies of the public THE COURT OF EQUITY, CHANCELLOR ROLL PRESIDING.-In re Alexander Glonni Francis 21. Weston, el al. This case wai sumed from Friday, and the pleadings t read. Mr. Miles opened his argument, vi was continued until the court adjourned. DISTRICT COURT-JUDGE LOGAN PRESIDE Tho 6emi-monthJv session at chambere held yesterday. The commitments of thc fifteen days reported by tho magistrates, .several discontinuances ordered, but t were no matters of public interest. This tom of Btated preliminary examinations (i gurated by Judge Logan, and afterward n imperative upon tho magistrates by a Ger .Order), is a ronsiderable^aving of expens the State, as well as a material aid in obtaii a speedy adniinistration of justice. Our Mi also disposes very summarily of much ma that would otherwise go through the fo and oxpenses of jury trials in tho quart sessions. We hope to hear that the next dot will not be so heavy as tho ono of the last ti of this court._' MATOB'S COURT.-Monday has always b considered an unfortunate day A iib the? delinquents, and a large number of that cl ?appeared yesterday to answer for their n deedn. As usual, tho two days' docket cons cd principally of those who had forgotten ti standing in society, s. .uinbed to the bot and transgressed the city ordinances making their beds on the sidewalk. Sleep in thc open air being considered injurious, tl were each doctored to the amount of $5, t advised to bo moro careful of their health, thc doso would be doubled. Some of tho sinners acknowledged th shortcomings with penitence; others, aga tried thc- bluff game, but found that they t not hold tho trumps, and were compelled como down with the stamps. Among tho fraternity was a colored manw rejoiced in the royal name of Francis Josej He disclaimed all relationship to the Empei of Austria, but acknowledged that it was 1 birthday, and that he had made merry accoi ingly. In consideration of his candor ho vi released, but advised not to let his birthda occur moro than once a j ear. . A dispeuser of thc fluid, who neglected observo Sunday, was fined $20 for his irre gious practices. Several parties who were charged with i saults and being disorderly were each mulct to the tune of $5. Ben Huger (colored), a fish vender, succee ed in cleating a neat row with a brother rn? chant, and was accordingly captured. T Mayor, though not a fisherman, knew how catch such characters, and his net soon haul in a $10 greenback. There are few nights that pass without sor applications for lodgings, and among tho brought before the Mayor woro two negroe one au octogenarian, and the otb or a boy abo nvc years of age. The first was grey and d crepid, and, from his statement, it appear that he was formerly a slave of Ur. Perry, St. Helena Parish. Ho approached the dei with tears, and said : '"Massa, I can't seo no I nas a good-f-lavc once, but I'se worthlo now." Tho Mayor asked him a few qncstion fro:.! which it appearou that thia was nia fir visit to thc city, aud that he had come to see aid from thc government. He was sent to tt almshouse with his young companion, wb claimed to be a waif on thc wido world. Samuel Knights, a colored youth, who hu doubtless read the Scripture, and had tried i omulato David, succeeded in slinging a stot into tiie window of St. Peter's Church (colored on Wont worth-s'rect. Unfortunately for hil li o did not strike a Goliath, and tho slingii was charged u V tor his shot. She leaves Charleston every Monday night at 12 o'clock, and Savannah every Wednesday morn inc at 7 o'clock. Through tickets can bo bought for Florida, or the traveller may stop at Beaufort, Hil on Hoad and Bluffton. Captain John Ferguson hascharge of freight or passage. THE THEATRE.-Kathleen Mavourneen was greeted last night with a large and apprecia? tive audience, ifr. and Mrs. Watkins were in their happiest vein, and the piece v. as render? ed with a freshness and a thorough persona? tion of the characters which elicited general applause, it is an extremely difficult matter to render Irish characters in an acceptable manner, but. thc present star6 hu vc ably sus? tained the reputation they acquired abroad, and thc aching is worthy of ?enuinc natives of the Green Idle. She. Watkins' fine voice adds an additional charm to thc entertainment, and tho songs "WeariDg of the Greoti" and "Kslh leen Mavourneen, ' neverfail to touch r. respon? sivo chord in thc audience. CITY IMPROVEMENTS.-It is uow well under? stood (.hat our present Mayor will rigidly en? force overy ordinance on the books. Many of these have been dead letters, and their resur? rection from the dust of tho past will cause some uneasiness among the property owners. The platform question settled, thesidewaiks are the next feature wort In ofconsidoralioti. Many of tho.- e are : n a dilapid?t ed condition. Caused by tho breaking of tiajc brick or stone pavements and tb a absence of curbs. On tho lino of the burnt district tho lota arc, in nearly every in? stance, open to the street, and cattle stray on the sidewall: unmolested, unless by some vigi? lant policeman. A number of those lots ore either excavated, or have ugly collars near the sidewalk, which iorm clangorous traps to pe? destrians. One of tho city ordinances states that all lots must be enclosed by a fence; but since the war this has not been enforced, and thc 6ic':ewalks have necessarily suffered. Mayor Burns has .visited overy section of tho city, and will net pass its imperfections by. Curbs aro to be laid, fences erected, sidewalks repaired, and a general improvement effected. Some pockets mo;, suffer, but tho city will reap the advantage, and tho public will bc able to pi c serve "meir shoe leather and their tempers. . SOMETHING NICE.-WC have boon luruishod. by Mr. Joseph Waiker, with u ".specimen brick" of the elegant work which, for the last two years, ho baa been daily turning out from his establishment, at No. 3 Broad-street, for thc admiration of thc public and to thc envy of all his brother typos. It ia an elegant little pamphlet of forty pages, printed for John H. Fairley &_ Co., our neigh? bors on Haync-atrect, and for exquisite execu? tion, tasteful arrangement, and effective "pre aentabiiity," it is a bijou iii it3 way. Tho pamphlet recites, tirat, what a busino-s-mau can do better i:i Charleston than anywhere oise; ard, next, give? a catalogue ol' all thc articles in thc calendar of dry, wet and taney gooda, with alternate pages of blank paper whose very surface tempts both peu and pen? cil. Wo aro at a loss whether to compliment Mr. Walker for bin success in this work of art, or Messrs. Fairloy & Co. (or so happily appro? priating tho advertising thunder that belongs to newspapers. Both are evidently "masters of tho situation,"' and prepared to make fur thor flunk movements in their rospoctivu ?Mh of operation. IMPROVEMENT IN BICE CULTURE.-A great Having of labor baa boen effected by tho intro ' duction of T. D. Dottorar'a rice planter, a. teat of which was given on thc 20th of February, al tho plantation of Mr. Vandorkorst, on theAshe poo, before a number of planters. Tho experi? ment is said to have been a complete success, and it was acknowledged by all prosont to be a machino admirably adapted for the purpose ol planting rice. Thi i machino is of home pro? duction, and ia described to bo one of tho bea* over introduced. It can be arranged to plant one or more trenches, and rons closo io ditch odgoa, thereby losing no planting gt'ou d. Wo give bolow one or two certificates of its working, which have been addressed to Mr. Dotterer: "The trial made yesterday on this place, with your improved nco planter, was highly .satisfac? tory, particularly so as it waa put tu a scVero teat in being triod m a Ueld which was only partially harrowed and toft, and liv no means free from slumps. Siuce writing that paragraph thc Ballimore Sun, of Saturday, has como to hand, in which paper wc find a report of a decision pf Judge Garey's, in tho Court ol' Common Fleas, up..ii th::, very point. Judge Carey said : "But it is not admitted that the oct did not take ( fleet except'as to tho appointment oi thc officers created thoicby and tho promulga? tion of roles and trcneral orders' until tho 1st day ol Juuo, 18C9 ; but to tito contrary it will be'found that thc most important rights and liabilities devolve upon parties immediately after the passage of thc act ; [seo sections 23, 27, 29, 39, and M]-for tho right to compel u debtor into involuntary bankruptcy-the dis allowance of preferences, or- ol a discharge ta :i bankrupt and thc right to have kim punished' for a fraud upon Ins creditors. WALKER'S ESTABLISHMENT, NO. 3 BBOAD STBEET.- Yesterday we had tho gratification ot examining two personal lodgers for the Pcple'a National Bank, manufactured at Walk? er's, No. li Broad-street. We commend them to the inspec? tion of thc public, l'heso booka aro furnished at tho same price as New York work, and aro tully equal to thc very beat Northern, and from careful inspection we cannot imagino how it could bo botter done.
