It has been a complaint frequently urged against American literature by English writers, and concurred ia to a great extent by such of our own critics as have treated the subjeot, that it is devoid of originality and without any dis? tinctive character of its own. They reproach cur poets with being merely more or loss sue cesstul L itators of their English brethren, our novelists with the reproduction of English novels, under a flimsy garb of American man? ner and locale, and in every dept - meat of lite? rature they tell us that only a faint and confused who of English thought, Uko the mysterious whispers of tho ancient sacred groves, is borno back across thc Atlantic to English care. It is difficult at first sight to perceive what it is that tbesb censors Uvsire; and if it were not that tho abortion is made a matter of re? proach, and that, ou thc strength of it, wo are twitted with want of individuality, and con? temptuously asked whether the world is never to have an original American literature, we j might admit the charge. But one of the Eng I Uah litterateurs, abandoning indefinite generali? ties, has condesconded to inform us what is meant by tho accusation. And tho spell that works this result is diffused from tho pages of a certain WALT WHITMAN, a creature who "locates" himself somowhero in New England, and who has published a volume entitled "Leaves of Grass," whereby, ia theeyob of the English critic-himself no mean poet-he has wiped away the reproach of his people, and opened the path to that "originality and distinc? tiveness" which, until his appeara: -?., Ameri? can literature so sadly lacked. Few of cur reader?, we imagine, have seen this book, and we do not advise them to seek it. Tho Bpirit of Mr. SWINBURNE clothed in metre resembling more in its uncouth, unmelo? dious grotesqueness the wonderful productions of Mr. TUPPER than any other professedly sane publication, may be American original? ity, but it is certainly neither common de. cency nor common sen3e. A "poem" in which, according to tho eulogy of the critic in the "Broadway," the animal propensities of tho body aro discussed and described with elaborate notice of the functions of caoh par? ticular member, may be a valuable contribu tiou to practical physiology, but its claim to a place in a lady's boudoir, or in thc bel'et lettres compartment of u gentleman's library, may well be questioned. Tte nature of the subject forbids illustrative quotations. If it bo originality io cloths the grossest and most repulsive sensuality in words which run io the rhythm of no known metrical system,-if to be "characteristic and distinc? tive" we must discard tho old alliterative rule of "rhyme and reason," and evolve a poetical literature out cf a WOTBO thau Lesbian filth, and a more than Babelian confusion of words and ideas, we think the American peoplo would gladly defer their day of literary regeneration as long as may be. Meantime, to meet the critic's objections to our literature as it slauds, we would ask the question, Is an original American literature, rightly considered, a possibility ? To dise?es this question fully, would lead us far beyond our Umiti. Bat we think the conclusion, to any thoughtful mind, must bo that ii is not. In all that relates to thc development of mind, all thal creates a literature, the two nations are identical. Tho linc of Horace, "Ccelun non anim-im rr.xitani, qui trans mare currun'," applies with a peculiar force to the present instance. Our customs, our manne", our abstract no? tions, our babils and phases of thought, are not local, but inherited. The iudividualily of the Anglo-Saxon mind ia marked and tena? cious. Indeed, there are facts which go to prove that tho law of development ia England cad America is essentially the same, and that the effect of colonial transplanting has been rather to hasten the growth ii that inevitable modiiicatiou cf law aad customs which charac? terize all human institutions than to produce ii or vary its nature. In every sphere of thought this is apparent. The ileform move? ment which is now agitating England, is only the reflux of a wave which has had its rising hero ; and it is a remarkable fact that the in itances aro neither few nor far between where statutory modifications of that great inheri? tance of tho race, the Common Law of Eng? land, have been adopted there kag after their establishment ca thic side the Atlantic. Tho Charleston DAILY News is the only pa? per in this Stale which has explained and dis? cussed thc principles of co-operative societies, md urged upon tho people tito wisdom of their general adoption. One co-operative socie'y has 'neeu established, and it wa? seen with great pleasure that tho "Palmetto Pioneer Co-opera? tive Association" had determined to organize ind establish immediately a co-operative store. This is n practical movement towards making tho co-operative principle thoroughly under? stood. Examplo will do more thau precept; and, although thc first co operative store may huvo to light against difficulties, it must suc? ceed if properly and economically managed. Indeed, there is encourng-ment fer the "Pi oncer," in the history of every wcll-conduclcd co operative society. A co-operative grocery store was opened in New York about twelve months ago, upon the principles mentioned ia a nre-vicus article. It is now a prosperous con? cern, has a good stock cu hand, has money to meet all its engagements, and is supplying its inembors at rates thirty and forty per cent, lower than those of tho ordinary shops. In Brooklyn the co-operativo glass cutters are doing remarkably well; and, in Albany, a co? operative flour society is supplying its mem? bers with flour at nine dollars, which is sell? ing at retail at eleven dollars, while a cc-ope rative coal society is supplying coal at six dol? lars per 'on, which ueually retails at seven dollars per lon. AU these societies are accu? mulating capital, as well ns saving the money of their members; but the grandest results havo been achieved in England. Thirty co-operative associations in England, in one year, sold goods to the amount of $100,000 each, and six to the amount of $500,000 each. The Rochdale "Equitable Pieneers," whose so? ciety met lately to open another new store, had, in 1S6?, six thousand two hundred and forty six members, and a share capital of half a million of dollars. It sold groceries in ono year to the amount of Si,500,000 ; and, al? though eales were made at a trifle over net cost, the profits of thc society-that is, the profits of tho members, in addition to their privilege cf purchasing-amounted to no less iban two hundrod thousand dollars. Thc capital of nearly all thc English co-ope? rative sooiciies is issued iu shares of ?4, each member being allowed to hold onl}* a cer? tain number of share*. Nearly all do a cash business, some give members oredit io tho extent of their paid up capital, and a few give credit to a greater extent. These societies have broken up the "truck" shops which, un? der the old credit system, ate up the entire earnings of thc working people. Their real? ized profits during tho year 1806, were S2,634, 078; and this proves that a working man can? not have a better investment than tho purchase of a ahare in a co-operativo socioty. TO REMT.
