In addition to the troubles that grow out of the creed that self-profit and self-advancement are the highest laws of political parties, tho Radi? cals have now to fi?ht against the patent fact that their party is "a house divided against itself." Ono wing demands that GRANT be President ; another, led by tho Tribune, cries tor CHA!JE and universal equality, tome of its members support a return to specie payments ; others, whisper their approval of wholesale repudiation. Here, a journul declares that the party was nevor as strong as it is at pre? sent; there, a National Committee appeals to the people to save the Radical faction from sinking. Nor are the leaders agreed upon their plan of campaign. Each aroh-Rudical has his pet project. BUTLER harps on the five twenty bonds; SUMNER argues upon forced equal suffrage ; STEVENS demands confiscation (and payment for those Harrisburg iron works which were accidentally burned down when the rebels crossed the border); ASHLEY still threatens impeachment. There are ethers of high rank, in iniquity, who are willing to forego a little of their spite for the sake of con? tinued rule. These aro willing to moderate their terms, to give up confiscation, to give up proscription, to give up white-slavery in the South. No two sections of the tarty are in unison; and it will require all tho terrors of the Radical whippers-in to secure any concert? ed aotitn at the coming session. Two Radical leaders, however, have the merit of being frank and out-spoken. They do Dot fear to say what they intend to do, and STEVENS aid WADE, at least, are always willing to publish the programme of their play STE? VENS, through his Doct r and the Herald cor? respondent, has spoken his speech; and WADE has found an intelligent reporter, who willingly heard bis naive and artless tale. WADE, as usual, was free from rhetorical flourish, but profuse in oaths and exclamations. He admitted that the attempt to carry negro suffrage, lost Ohio to the Radicals ; but ho vowed, and declared, that this issue should never be abandoned. Some surprise he did ex. re3B, at finding that there were so many Republicans who were willing to soo negro equality in tho South, but were opposed to it in t ie North; but he mercilessly declared thut Congress would not modify the Reconstruction laws, and would make them heavier if thc South did not behave better. Ho was sorry that his party was preparing to run in the dumb General with a "hip, hip, hurrah," but lie denounced the confiscation bills of his chum THADDEUS STEVENS. This was Mr. WADE'S declaration of Inten? tion, and he will c ti ry it out with nil the rude energy that is at his command. But the per? plexity is that he will not find many members of his , a. ty to join in his game. Some will rebel on the suffrage olause, others will secede upon impeachment, a third party will quarrel about confiscation, a fourth will split on the matter of the currency. There are many r.cks upon which th- Radioals may strike, any one of which will send them to the bottom. General oon?Jence has given way to general distrust-general support to general opposition. The country is aw.ikiug to a tull knowledge of the perils of its position. Hatred is taking the place of love ; and the edifice ol power, raised by the Radioals with such cunning .-kill-cemented with blood, furnished with the spoils of war, an i crowned with ten million of down trodden Southrons-is now sha?ea to the base, Already, the rms are fleeing from the wrath to oome ; already the trembling walls give omen of the final fall of the whole fabric of North American Radicalism. h ree Religion? The world roils round from day to day, and the purposes and passions of men roll in a clr c e with it. No one knows their beginning; no one can see their end. But all is moving {a a ring, in which etch, if he live long enough, shall touch upon v hat has already beun known, done, and suffered. There is nothing new; and scepticism, and bowing to tbs golden idol, are as ol J as powdered wigs, and txtended trains. In the beginning there was reverence and submission. Thon, career? ing by, came violence and wrong. Then, ushered in ty flute and dulcimer, broko the day 01* purple and Bcarlet. Next, was the hour of forge fulness, and, last, was summary punishment. Of course it is inconvenient to be bothered by thoughts of eternal responsibility. The easiest programme is junketting, feasting, love? making, marrying, silver hairs, cramped limbs, bowed frame, and then-nothing. Fret dom is understood to be, not the right to work, and fight, and strive for a crown, but the right to do as is pleased and care not a jot for the cost. All is pretty; all pleasant; nil luxurious; if it were only somethiug more than a pit-fall, whose top is fair and green, but whose bottom is tull of spikes that tear, and covered with nets that hold. Freedom in thought, act and word does not cause freedom in trade. That is a pocket question; a consideration of dollars and oents. What a man will not do lor thc next world he will do for this; he will not give freedom of trade, but he will have freedom in religion. A number of persons have associated them? selves in Boston, as members of a church, which is to revolutionise America and push it a little further uown the steep sides >? Avernue. They announce that there is but one religion, and that is their religion-Fane RELIGION. Their soliiary article of fulth is: "M.emb:rship in this association shall leave each individual responsible for his o?n opinions alone, and afleot in no degr. o his relation to other asso? ciations." This mantle covers a motley group, j One applicant believed in his own unbelief, and J prated about the Author of his Being;-he was i counted in. Another aid he was * "Progres? sive Friend," and h:id no creed;-he was added to the roll. A third wa- utterly incredulous on the subject of spiritualism;-he was gladly cceptcd. A four:!: alleged that spirituality did exist, and Eupportea ihegospel narrative; he was received wiih open arma. Believe in une Deity or a dosvn, in LECOMTE, DALE OWES, PAYNE, JEREMY BENTUAM, MALTHUS, MUMBO JUMBO, VOLTAIRE, the grave of >iA HOMET, or noihing ai all, and there is room in the ranks of the disciples of FREE RELIGION. This new association absolve themselves from all obedience to external authority, and guvcrn themselves according io their own ca? pricious will. They acknowledge no moral or religious obligation. "I will, or I will not," is ?heir whole th?ologie system. They do ill by stealth and blush not to find it shame; they are g ling pell-mell to a devil whose existeuoe they do not credit. These poor fools-for fools they are in this FREE RELIGION, however wise they may be in other things-are endeavoring to free them? selves fi om the bond of un Almighty power. Religion know3 no suoh freedom at: they dream e.r; and thero is a grim otausoment in the idea of a dosen middla-aged men attempting to es tabl.sh a sysUm that neither eanh nor Heaveu will permit. Men must havo one firm pillar upon which to lean. They must have a Btaff that will not bend. There is no more hopeless i oondition than that of tho man who know? his own frailty, and tries to meet it by preaching that wro g has no scourge, and error no tor? ment. This last bubblo will soon break, but it is sad and grievous that it should ever have been made visible. Only those who are stained by inuits urge the absence of a punishing nrm; only those who have broken the law proclaim the penalty intolerable and unjust. The Land of Fogs. Americans will meddle with spelling. They have WEBSTER cn the brain ; and they had no sooner bought out the region of fogs and dai kness usually known as Aliaska, than they inegotis tically dropped the "I" and dubbed the new province Alaska. Little hnd been known ol' this Alaska,-with the "I,"-except that it was 350 miles long, and 25 miles wide, and had several active volcanoes ; but, when it became the property of tho United States, for a con? sideration of as many millions as there are deadly sins, it was immediately found to bo a pl.oe of oonsiderable importance. There were Alaskians and anti-Alaskians. Herald and Tribuna and Times waged a wordy war; but the disou6siqn did good, and some deter? minate result does seem to have been reached. A reliable gentleman, who came down in the last ship, says that Alaska is a temperate re? gion, although the natives are addioted to the use of alcoholio stimulants. It is warmer there in the Winter than it is in Southern New York or Northern Virginia; but the degree of warmth depends greatly on the thickness of clothing, and the muscular activity of the daring investigator. The soil is good; fish, particularly cod, is plentiful; cattle can be grazed for nine months, and eaten all tho year round; the trees would be excellent for ship? building, if any ships were wanted larger than a ten foot canoe ; there are many good har? bors, and no vessels to go into them ; there ls copper and gold, but, happily, no greenbacks ; the natives are fierce, warlike, and acoustomed to fighting each other, and will give amusement to a'spare Major-General, when the Indian row is settled, and thc bureau-people demand an? other war. In Alaska there aro thousands of ?ores of land as well adapted to cultivation and stock-raising as many parts of the New England States; and the thrico-happy abo? rigines have never seen a negro. This is onough. Alaska is amino of wealth. Future birthplace of bardy soamon, and pres? ent nome of seal, whale and walrus.
