Greeley Blas themes I HORACE GREELEY grev blasphemous before the day of the New York elections, and said ex? ultantly that "God's finger had written plainly on the eventful history of our last ten years His approval" of the Republican cause and His resolve that it should triumph. In what manner this approval has been shown, other eyes than those of Mr. GREELEY cannot well discover. It certainly is not in the United States, which have been pushed back ualf-a-century by the unfaithfulness and per? jury of tho Radical party. It oannot bo in France, for there Imperia ism is more firmly seated than over. It oannot be in Italy, fo; there VICTOR EMMANUEL is King. It canna be in Germany, for there the King of Prussia is absolute. It cannot be in either Austr.a, Poland, ?pain, Russia, England or Turkey. Where then is it ? But Mr. GRESLEY seems to infer that larine approbation will consummate the great vork of rendering this a land of Equal Rights and Equal Laws, and says that they s.e blessed who shall have proved faithful, al.ke in dark and in brighter hours. The ides. of the Phi? losopher, ou this matter of equa-ity, are very refreshing. Coes he see any equality in the South, where one end of the beam touches the clouds, while tho other is in the mud? Does ue see it in the North, in class legislation, in class protection, in class proscription, and class abuse. Does he see it in the Tribun* office, where there is inequality of profit as there is inequality of merit ? Does he see the equality that he prates about in any oity, town ur hamlen between the North Pole and the .southern Ocean ? Mr. GREELEY did his best. He vowed, and swore, and abused, and threatened ; but his party lost the election- His words may be our words, but with a nigher, truer meaning, for ihe South can, from her heart, say : "Blessed are they who shall have proved faithful to the cause, alike in dark and in orighter hours. On, then, to the struggle of to-morrow." ..Great .Moral shows." The great sign-board of American society bears, in characters that may be read from the ice-fieids of Maine to the canebrakes of Louis? iana, this one startling word-MORALITY. Around the edge, there may be such incidental amusements as stock-jobbing, fortune-hunting, pi us hypocrisy, mock philanthropy, and gen. eral cheat-your-neighbor; but MORALITY is the groat catch-word, the great rallying cry, that gives effect and force to the whole. The prop may ce of gold or greenbacks, interest or amusement, veneer or solid stuff; but the sign that it bears, in all weai-iera and for all people, is unchanging und the same. Old-fashioned Ambition and Pride and Be? nevolence, have been cudgelled out of the field. .Morality must have the whole course to itself; and, barring uccidents, it runs ita race irom time to eternity, to the great advantage of the plucky jockey. It may be ridden by cat, man, or monkey; the track may be over green sward, or quick set hedges; the stakes may be large or small; but, in every case, the steed wins nothing Out tor his reputed owner, and may receive, for .ns pains, nothing more than a fresh polish, kick in the side, or a feed of benevolent oats bad quality and short measure. The sign of MORALITY is read by all manner of people, and its tawdy blazonry is watched oy tne prudent German of tho West, by the uravo Irishman of the iiorth, by the African .aborsr of the South, and by the crop-eared American of the Eastern States. Societies are formed for the purpose of fur? nishing flannel waistcoats to the scantily clothed Sandwich Islanders, while tens of thousands of poor white women, at home, are cryi. g for bread;-all on the soors of Morality. >Vom u doctors take to themseres braten faces and false fronts, stand bet?re the fire like men, .iud are jeered at, and pointed at, from Paris io Otaheite;-Al lor the good of Morality. "Black Crooks" be some more sreoaed,-sensation preachers ba? j?me more hotly energetic,-Congressmen be ;ome mor j pompously boring,-tens of thou? sands of prosperous speculators water their whiskey, ?and their sugar, burn their houses, eopper their preserves, bet their "pile" at turo, and bless the dispositions of a benevolent Providence;-all for pure Morality. Nor is this all. Neituer m*n, women, nor oeasis, can push along with pecuniary comfort unless the MORALITY sign-board, big or little, ueads their advancing train. It is true that it 1 L-nds occas onally in burietque and ridicule, in blasphemy aud coming to grief) but this matters ' uot if the aim is but-Morality. Poor Charleston bas not had as full a share ' ? There is reason a un-reason; there is consolation in small size c md inferior importance; and this half-burned , ;ity can show hor citizens some wondrous hiugs that New York, Philadelphia, and Bos? en hnv<> almost forgotten. There is, in each and every me, the fail t odor of saw-dust and lemon peel, " oe purpose is ever the same; but there is as - auch difference between the circus seen in the south and the hippodrome of the North, as here is between Bhort-sklrted, beautiful, t Mdlle ASASDISE, when tho horses gallop, and he band is loudly braying, and the sane old | young damsel, when, with uukompi hair and face ill-washed, she quaffs her morning draught. Circuses were nearly perfect. They had a great deal outside that was not inside; they had every animal in the world, and some out ?rf it; they had men who could ride fifty howes ot a time, and women who would lightly jump lt thousand feet in the air, turn head over heel, kiss bands and retire; they had oonjurors who would chew swords, cat fire, take something out of nothing, swallow the circus-pole, and disappear with the money-box; they had clowns who would make jokes at which folks laughed because they were not expected to cry, and there was no choosing between tba two ex? tremes; ?hey had saw-dust, rouge, paint, hum? bug, trickery,-all for fifty cents; but the whole vast fabric was incomplete for want of the crowning charm. The omission might have been fatal, but it was discovered; the managers have hoisted the sign-board of MORALITY, and every travel? ling circus is now knowu as a "great moral show." There is morality in the educated monkeys, horses and goats ; there is morality in the herd of tapirs, the flock of Emus, the gang of por? cupines ; there is morality in the famous goril? la, not belonging to Barnum ; there is morality in camel, lion and elephant ; there is morality in the symmetrical tent, in thc crowd of spec? tators, in the little nigger who slips in with? out paying, in the saucy boy who pours ? pint of peas into the big trombone, in the darkey who laughs, ha ! ha !-in the prancing, the dancing, the joking, thc jesting, the proprietor, the agent, the audience ; the whole show is concentrated, double-distilled extract of moral? ity and - only half a dollar. One is coming, two are coming. Two "great moral shows" are on their way to Charleston ; and, if every man, woman and little baby in this oity does not gain an extra tinge cf moral? ity, and lose an extra dollar, while they re? main, it will not be the fanlt of- JOHN ROBIN?
