The juveniles who have gazed wonderingly at the huge pictures on his sign board, will have to console themselves with the anticipation of tho good time coming. FBEIGHTS.-The increase in tho arrivals of cot? ton from the interior, has caused quite a demand for steam freight .room, and the steamships de? parting for Northern ports appear all to go full. Tho Ohampion which left for New York on Satur? day, had on board 1440 bales of Upland Cotton, besides other ^merchandise, and the Alabama whioh departed * early on Sunday, had about 1000 packages of cotton, rice, and other sundries. Ves? sels seem to bo iii demand here. SAILS AOAINHT STEAM.-The fine three-masted schooner Moses B. Brambah, Captain HUSSEY, arrived hore on Saturday last in sixty-five hours from New York, having left that city on Wednes? day. Tho trip may be considered in all respecta as equal to steam time. She is now employed in MAOBEADX'S line of New York packets, and is one of the fastest vessels on the coast. Mr. WILLIAM ROACH is tho agent here for these first class sail? ing packets. _ THE STEAMSHIP GEORGE B. They have recently placed messengers on tho night Columbia train which connects with thc Greenville and Columbia Road, and all moneys . and freight confided to their core aro forwarded through without any delay at Columbia. This will provo a great asaistanco to shippers, and will enable consignees to receive their goods at the earliest possible date. ? MAYOB'S COUBT.-The only culprit brought be? fore the Court was a cow with a crumpled horn, though not the same one spoken of by Mother Goose as having performed the un-oow-like feat of jumping over the moon. The bovine was found ,, going astray, wandering in forbidden pastures contrary to the ordinance made and provided in such coses, and was impounded. An owner appear? ing to claim his beast, was informed that a one dollar greenback was tho only key that could re? lease her. This was paid, with a promise that he would teach his cow to avoid trespassing on for? bidden territory. THE CHARLESTON STEAM SAW MILL.-Among tho various improvements that are now being per? fected in different paris of the city, we are pleased to notice the rebuilding of the Charleston Steam Saw Mill, better known, perhaps, M STEINMEYKB'S Mill. This mill is at the foot of Beaufain street, fronting on Gadsden street, and was burnt down before the war. Messrs. J. H. STXTNMXYEB SC Son the prosont proprietors, have commenced rebuild? ing the mill on the old site, and expect to have it in foll operation by January. The lumber business of Charleston has always been an important source of revenue, and we are glad to see that Messrs. HTEINMEYE R & Hon have determined to put their mill again in running order. ARREST OP PARTIES CONCERNED IN TEASING OT THE TltAOK ON THE SOUTH CAROLINA RA?LBOAD. Officer COATES, of the Detective Force, who has been absent from the city on the trail of certain parties suspected of having torn up the tra ok on tho South Carolina Railroad, near Hopkin's Torn Out, returned to the city a few days since with I three colored men, Barney Goodwin, John Mont? gomery and William Kirkland. The prisoners wero taken about nine miles from Columbia, and near the seen-) of tho accident. The arres* was made by order of the Commanding General, and the parties turned over to Lieutenant HBKPBIOKS for examination, Their depositions and the evi? dence in the case was taken by Magistrate KANA VAUX, and will bo made public in ? abort time. IBO* COVTON TIKH.-Tn walking along tho wharves, the difference between the cotton bales secured by ropes and those having iron ba apparent. The former havo an old-fast clumsy appearance, whioh is ip striking cc_ with tho oloso, compact balea bound with iron. Many of'the latter have been compressed in tho patent hand-power press, and, being all of the same size, ar? more easily handled than those prepared in tho country screw. As a largo num? ber of ties have boon paton ted, samples of each can be econ on tho different wharves, and (tooee interested can compare the patents and form some estimate of their efficiency. The iron ties have been received .with general favor by tho planters and a large proportion ort?c cotton n?W stet to market is scoured in this manner. No deduction is allowed for the exits weight, but tho advantages more than counterbalance this loss. It ia a known fact that cotton bales' bound with Iron are less | likely to be damaged by Are than others, several'[ fires having occurred At different points; in1 which J the iron bound bale?, were the only-ones that were | saved. VANDKBHUBBT'B WHAB*-THE LEAHY LINK. -This largo and oommodions wharf, which has boon long known by tho name of VANDBBHOBST'S from its ownership in that family, has lately boon undergo? ing coneidorablo repairs, the bulkheads having boen cut down and rebuilt with new palmetto. The bridge? have boen repaired and new timber and plank pot iu place of the old and a substantial and commodious shed is now being fitted up and will soon be completed for tho accommodation of the LEAHY line of steamships, now composed of the Saragossa and Alabama, both superior vessels and well commanded. Tho agents of the line hero are Messrs. lt AVENEL SC Co., and their ships leave promptly for New York on every Saturday. This wharf has been for many years uudor tho manage? ment of Mr. F. P. BROWN & Co's WHABVBS.-This valuable property composed of two pier hoads, and which is so cen? trally and conveniently located for business, has, for some time past, boon in ' he bauds of the wharf builders, and tho South pier which is very broad and commodious, has been largely rebuilt with new Palmetto work, and the wharf placed in tho best condition for the accommodating, of vessels. The docks have boon dredged during tho past season, and with an excellent shed to facilitate tim disohargo of cargoes, every desirable facility can bo given for the rapid ^mpatch ot work. Previous to the war this property was under tbe officient man? agement of the late H. P. S TREET, Esq., and is now under control of his son, Mr. THADDEUS STREET, of the house of STREET Bro. Sc Co. Tho tact displayed in its management has secured it a full share of traffic; and the wharves generally present a lively and busmens-1 ike appearance. THE WEATHER.-A sorry set of rueful visages was turned skyward yesterday, but no ray of hopo gleamed out from tho leaden clouds. Thc dork of the weather had evidently changed the pro? gramme, and many church-goers woro reluctantly compelled to romain at homo, A rainy Sunday is always depressing. The love of a bonnet cannot bo admired, and the pleasuro of wearing Sunday - go-to-meeting clothes is gone. Old Bin vins is nc respecter of persons, and those whose duties call them abroad aro glad to escape from his fury bj taking refuge in a street car. In a city like Charleston, a rainy Sunday has more than thc usual solemn stillness connected with the hob day. Tho streets aro comparatively deserted, and the hotels have only a few stragglers who tn to kill time, while the slim attendance at th< churches shows that thero are Dot many believer) in the old provorb that "a Sunday Tain cunno kUL" " i TICKET-MAKE RS.-The time for the election c delegates to the Military-Law Convention is ap preaching, and the ticket-makers are airead busily ut work. A correspondent hos sent us hst of nominations, or tickets, already projeotec and, if the names were published, some of oe good citizens would be surprise J at tho comp an in which the political manipulatoi s have place timm. Four tickets are given by our correspoi dent. OUR STEAMSHIP LINES.-The steamship is fa taking possession of the trafilo on the ocean, an in accordance with this tendency, the numbo plying from the various Northern ports to th point are constantly increasing. We have at pr sent three regular lines to New York ; the fir composed of the steamships Champion and Ma: hattan, with the Bhode Island and James Adg soon to be added. Tl have gone to work with a will, and have show praiseworthy desire to better their conditioi life. Politics have not affected their brains to t great extent, and, though fond of attending pa' meetings, there are but few who neglect tl work for this purpose. The sudden change fi slavery to freedom has been made, and Char ton is still, perhaps, the most orderly city in United States. The friends of the negro, the t philanthropists, established during the wa savings institution, where Che freedmen could posit their earnings. This was located at Wi ington, with twenty branch offices in various p of the country, and though in operation but a years, has already proved a success. It has duced the negro to be provident and economi and his savings have often amounted to a con erable sum. In the monthly statement of thu Btitution it appears that the Charleston brime State street has received $22,09419 ss deposits ring the month of September. This ia the lari imount received at any office, and speaks wei the thrift and industry of Our colorad people. --*?jj*--* A NEW PAVEMENT FOB EAST BAY.- Tho Corni tee on Streets have at last succeeded in aeon a pavement for a portion of East Bay that will think, give general eatisfaotion. The City artneer was engaged Oh Saturday, in having aidowalk on the East aide of thia -street, beti Market and Cumberland streets graded'for.a < lng of tar and limei' This combination ia kt as the asphaltnm pavement, and has boon rei ad with favor wherever used. It is not al toge in experiment in this city, as the sidewalk bl j of General CANDY'S house, sud ft portion of j street near the Battery, are p?Ved with this terial. That now being laid on East Bay wi composed of s mixture of tar and refuse lime, latter being obtained from the gas works, will form a hard, durable pavement, almost pervious to weather, and but little affecte time, and can be used in a few hours from the it is laid. Aside from these- advantages thc phaltum pavement costs far loss than those foi of brick or flagstones, as the material ia aban? md can be obtained st a email outlay. It W % great improvement to East Bay, ss wat a aaa been -without a sidewalk for some time luring rainy weather la almost impassable. 1 present oxperimont should prove successful Dommittee design ru mialling tho entire street a sidewalk o? this material.
