[voa nn onABT.Kfrroif nun nsw*.] [The following poem, an altered version of which waa published in our issue of October 0th, under the title of " The Conf?d?rale Dead," was written by Captain O'HABA, of Kentucky, on tho occasion of the transfer of the romaine of the Kentucky officers Who foll at Huon a Vista, from tho battle? field, where they were originally interred, to the State Cemetery at Frankfort. The changes made to adapt the poem to the purpose for which lt has betta republished, will be rpparont, and are par? ticularly noticeable in the sixth and seventh stanzas. It ia due to the truthfulness of liter a turo that the history of the poem be set right, and its perversion pointed out.] THE REQ,UH)M FOR THE DEAD. "The muffled drum's sad roil has beat The soldier's last tattoo I No more OB life's parade shall meet That brav? and fallen few. On Fame's eternal camping ground Their silent teats are spread, And glory guards, with solemn round, The bivouac of the dead. "No rumor of the foe's advance Now swells upon the wind, No troubled thought at midnight haunts Of loved ones left behind ; No vision ot the morrow's strife The warrior's dream alarms ; No braying hos? or screaming fife . At dawn shall eal! to arms. "Their shivered swords are red with rust, - Their plumed heads are bowed. Their haughty banner trailed In dust. Ia now their martial shroud ; And plenteous funeral tears bava washed The red stains from each brow. And the proud forms, by battle gashed. Are free from anguish now. "The neighing troop, the flashing blade. The bugle's stirring blast, The charge, tho dreadful cannonade, The din and shout are past Nor war's wild note, nor glory's peal. Shall thrill with fierce delight Those breasts that never more may feel The rapture of the fight. "Like the fierce Northern hurricane That sweeps his great plateau, Flushed with the triumph yet to gain. Came down the serried foe Who heard the thunder of the fray Break o'er the field beneath. Knew weU the watchword of that day Waa -victory or death." ?**..* "Full many a mother's breath has swept O'er Angustura's plain, And long the pitying sky has wept Above its mouldered alain. The raven's scream, or eagle's flight, Or shepherd's pensive lay. Alone now make each solemn height That frowned o'er that dread fray. "Sons of the dark and bloody ground I Ye must not slumber there, Whore stranger steps sad tongue resound Along the heedless air ; Your own proud land's heroic soil Should be your fitter grave ; She claims from war ita riebest spoil The ashes of the brave. "Thus, 'neath their parent tarf they rest, Far from the, gory field, Borne to a Spartan mother's breast On many a bloody shield. The sunshine of their native sky Smiles sadly on them here, And kindred eyes and hearts watch hy The heme's sepulchre. "Rest on, embalmed and sainted dead I Dear as the blood ye gave ; No impious footsteps here abaU tread Tbs herbage ot your grave ; Nor shall your glory be forgot While Fame her record keeps. Or Honor pour ta the hallowed spot Where Valor proudly sleeps. "Ton marble minstrel's voloeful atone, In deathless song shall tell, When many a vanished year hath Sown, The story how ye fell ; Ncr wreck, nor change, nor winter's blight. Nor ttm.'s remorseless doom, Can dim ons ray af holy light That gilds your glorious tomb." - FROS? WASHINGTON. [Special Dispatch to Os Baltimore Suss,} TBXAflUSY INVESTIGATION-PEO6PE0TIVX REMOVAL OT SUPERINTENDENT OLABK-TENURE OF OFFICE LAW-PBESIDBNT JOHNSON'S POSITION -OHNEI1AL OBANT'S HEALTH. WAffixnoroH, October 28.-It is given ont that the Committeo om Retrenchment, now examining into the affairs of the printing bureau of the Treasury Department, will ask Secretary Mccul? loch to suspend 8. M. Clark from the superinten? dency of the bureau above named. The members of the committee to inquire into the assassination of Mr. Lincoln arrived to-day, but did not tr an sac t any business. They expect to proceed with the inquiry to-morrow. Certain editors of newspapers suggest that in proposing to treat tho tenure of office law aa un? constitutional, by the removal instead of suspen? sion of Mr. Stanton, the President is inconsistent with his avowed policy to rogard all the acts of | Congress M legal and valid anal decided to be the reverse by tho Supreme Cour , lu answer to this, it is understood, Mr. Johnson makes this distinc? tion botwenn his responsibility and duty under the tenure of office act, and other acts or Congross, passed over his veto, and which he yet regards as , unconstitutional, namely : that in the matter of the removal of members of tho Cabinet, there are bat two persons who can take the initiative and do the act of acte that will make a ease for the adjudication of the Supreme Court, and these two persons axe the President and the cabinet officer removed: whereas tn the other laws ?I Congress other officers snd citizens are the parties dircoUy affected, sod are required to perform, or refuse to perform the acts that make np a case for the deci? sion of the Supreme Court. In this view of the subject, Hr. Johnson was the only one who could take such action fis would eventually carry the ease before the court: no one could take the initiative in the matter of the re? moval of a cabinet minister for him, He alone Uss the power of removal of that officer. In the execution of other Acts of Congress, the Executive necessarily leave? it to the parties aggrieved, or whose rights are directly affected by the laws, to test the constitution ali ty of the lawn. Oes. Grant has been ill for the past two days, sad has therefore not. visited the war Department or headquarters during that period He is expect? ed to be ont to-morrow. TU Raleigh Sentinel says, "Information has been received by a friend of our* in this city, from a gentleman in Illinois, that Utero is in his county an ex-bomber of Sherman's army, who stole . fine horse named "Black Hawk," ind a blooded bay mare, from the neighborhood of Raleigh,, North Carolina, in 186S. The horse lt re? ported to have died, bot he still has the mare in his poss-sion, and also a very fine roan maro, which waa probably stolen from the neighborhood of Charleston, S. C. Any person having lost any sash animals, by calling at this cf?ta -xiii he for-1 nighed with su h facta as may possibly lead to their recovery." - George Francie Train illustrates himself in the following apooimen : "AB promised, I built for their accommodation a hotel iii sixty days, st a eos! of twenty thousand dollars, with black wal ?ut furniture in, sad rented it to West Point Oos Sss* ns five years for fifty thousand dollars, 1 shall leave next week to slump Kansas Aw Wo? man's BuAYage. sty one million Irish girl? will tefi on the Presidential vote, and if my five thou Famam street prices, I will raaMns thirty millions.
