Church on Sunday to defray the expenses of a
soldier's monument in Charleston. Throe bun
red and ten bodies of Unira soldiers aro placed in
Magnolia Cemetery.

bad tho effect of inducing a nugatory movement to
the sunny South, and tho travel on the different
railroads has largely increased. On last Wednes?
day th? Northeastern Railroad brought to this city
over eighty passengers, sixty-five of whom took
breakfast at Mr. GAMBLE'S hotel in Florence. This
is toe largest number that bavo arrived at any one
aim? since th? war, and if tho movement is con?
tinued the hotels will soon i resent a moro lively
appearance than they have exhibited for some
months, and the circulation of greenbacks bo
largely increased.

cows to roam tho stroots has been frequently al?
luded to, and, though contrary to a city ordinanoo.
it is of daily oocurreuoe. Yesterday morning a
I cow, who had Just been released from her sUble,
I created some consternation in the lower part of j
Meeting street, by rushing fiercely along, preferring ;
the eidowalk to the unpaved street. Fortunately,
but few persons were in tho neighborhood at the
time, and tho ?ow took the nearest route for tho
burnt district, whero a meagre feast of dusty
grass and weeds awaited her. There are many
persona who have a wholesome fear of cattle, not*
wi th st Anding their mild appearance; but when
they forget the laws of propriety and occupy the
whole street, they should receive the same penalty
meted to unruly bipeds-bo locked up for safe
keeping. The burnt district is unoccupied by any
person, and, If the cows could bo kept within itu
limits, there would be no cause of complaint; lut
when they are permitted io roam undisturbed ia
any portion of tho city, we think that tho public,
who are not interested in cattle gracing, should bo
in io rm od that there is a law which imposes a pen?
alty on tho owners of tho stray kino.

POLICE.-At 2 A. M. yesterday, Policeman CAHILL,
who was on duty near tho oom or of Boaufain and
Mazyck streets, KW flames issuing from the
building occupied by Mr. Jxo. H. BOLES* as a
grocery store. Tho alarm woe given, and observ?
ing a suspicious person coming from the house he
was ordered to halt. This he refused to do, but at?
tempted to escapo by Hight, and, on being pur?
sued, presented a pistol to the policeman. Wheo
near West street, finding that ho was still pursued,
ho flrod the pistol, the shot Using offset in the
arm of CAHILL. Sergeants WBSTOOAT and BILBY,
attracted by the sound of the shot, rode up io
time to arrest the fugitive, who also drew bia pis- <
toi on them, but was speedily overpowered. Tba
fire was set ia tho rear of the building, and a quan?
tity of cotton saturated with turpentine was
secured by the police. It was evidently a precon?
certed pian to burn tho building and thoa secure
either some booty or the insurance, but the watch?
fulness of the police frustrated the schemes of the
rascals. The house waa owned by Mr. T. CLATTT,
and insured for $5000, which expires ia a few days.
THOMAS DOLAS, the man arrested for the attempt,
ie a stranger, and bis real motive is not known, as
ho denies being near the house. He has bees
turned over to a magistrate for prosecution, and,
as the punishment for arson ls hanging, we trust
some example will bo made. Fires have been af
frequent occurrence, and thc evidence in this case
ia too clear and positive to allow tho owpeirafcor
to escape.

last September. I have always bean prejndleod In favor
of tho "Screw Press," and nothing but dire necessity in?
duced me to try any other. I take pleasure, however, la
adding my testimony in favor of ita entire adaptation to
the .wants ot a cotton plantation. It has surpassed my
most sanguine expectations. I have packed With but
two hands, yot I prefer four-two at each lover. My
bales all weighed over 600 lbs. Th? first lot I sent to
market averaged 662 1 :.s. My impression ls that Roo lbs.
ls about thc capacity of the Press, and a greater number
of pounds subject the fodow-block to too much r?k, un?
less the sides of the cotton box was Increased. It would

consequent portability and simplicity (being easily mau
agod bj any one of ordinary intelligence). Areal com?
