THE STATE BI.JDS.-Wa copy, from the Columbia Chronicle, the following information : "On authority that is unquestionable, wo have the pleasure of informing the publio that General CABBY has ordered tho Treasurer of the State to pay the bills against tho Stato for the quarantine established at Charleston by order of General SICKLES, in the bills receivable of the State. "This act mnst remove all doubt as to the value of this curroncy, both now and under tho incom? ing State Government. There has bon a tear that the demanda of the military authorities upon i the Stato Treasury would absorb all of the green? backs due from various sources. T.io : quarantine. ; bills themselves have been a bugbear; yet only about twenty-five hundred dollars per month has been the amount of expenditure required, and this will cease probably in thirty dayp. "Brokers and others interested in buying the bills receivable have availed themselves of this public doubt to depreciate their value; among the ignorant they have found their dupes, and tho money had been sold at some discount. In Charleston, four days ago, we learn that tho bills were worth "ninety." This action of General GARBY, however, authorizing the payment of Stn Jo accounts with State currency, is an absolute en? dorsement of their valuo, and no citizen has far? ther excuse for refusing to take it, "But even without this order of the military commander, there was not the slightest probabili? ty of loss being entailed upon any man by this circulation. There is not more than thirty thou? sand dollars in the market, all told, whilo there are upwards of one hundred and twenty thousand dollars due the State on tax executions that have been issued." SHERIFF'S BALES.-The Clarendon Prose has a supplement containing lliroo columns of adver? tisements of Sheriffs ?nion. TbiB is quito a largo amount, but tho papers in each District have a considerable portion of their spaoo devoted to these advertisements. At sovoral of tho Court Houses sa los of real estate havo taken place, but only in a few instances have tho prices realized approximated those demanded for the same prop? erty before the war. Order No. 10 has prevented a number of ex?cutions, and has, in a measure, kept up the price of land, but whon this restric? tion is removed, and tho solos take placo under the Sheriffs executions, rt al estate will become greatly depreciated, and will bo Bold at very low rates. DEATHS IN MABLBOBCUGB DISTBIOT.-We learn from tho Bonnottsvillo Journal of t o doath of | two esteemed citizens of Marlborough District. The Journal says: "A. N. BBISTOW, Esq,, Ordinary of Marlborough District, died in this plano on tho 14th instant, after a sovere but painful illness, aud was buried with Masonic honors at tho Baptist Church grave? yard. "Mr. BBISTOW was bom in Marlborough District. Ho hod boon ordinary for this District for many years, and had faithfully performed the duties of I bis office to tho satisfaction of all. Residing in Kennett sviIle for a groat number of years, ho was one of our oldest and best citizens. "It is with painful sorrow that we sro called to record thu death of another of our most estimable citizens, Mr. JOHN PEABODY, a young man of groat promise, who died on tho ISffJb. instant, of fovor, in this place, and was buried with Masonic honora." MAYOR'S COURT.-Tho only item that was obtain ablo in tho Halls of Justice was tho sad fate of "two very nico young mon," who, not warned by fate, ?Vc., loft their homos with the intention of taking a small nip. Aitxs, for human nature 1 their good resolutions melted away like the sugar in a cobbler glass, and the moon looked pityingly upon them as they rested their heads upon a lap of earth. No useless blankets enclosed their breasts, nor in bunk or in bed they laid them, but thoy were 1 tko warriors taking their rest, as they had met tho enemy, and after a long struggle had fallen in the conflict, had caved completely. Tbey were found by the poelors, who considerately wait? ed for a wagon, and they all took a ride. The mo? tion of the low-backed oar caused pleasant memo? ries qf the past, hut those height dreams were their last. Tho castle gate closed with a loud clang, Bud they found that hope was left behind, for that night nt least. In tho morning they wore allowed to depart, OTl payment of the panal entnlicp foes, and wore dubbed solemnly D.D., which, for tbe be? nefit of the uninitiated signifies, tho third dogroe or dead drunk, THE CORON EU'S INQUEST ON THE DEATH OF Tao X?B NUGENT.-The inquest hold by Coroner WHI Toia on tho body of THOMAS NUGENT, who died suddenly, on the 12th inst., at the houso of RICH? ARD MURPHY, No. 2 Queen st.-eot, was terminated yesterday by the official report of Dr. Jos. A. YATES, tho physician who was called in to examino the caso. From his testimony-which included a care? ful investigation and post mortem examination together with that of other witnesses, it appears that the rpmors in circulation attributing foul play to tho associates of tho deceased were totally un? founded, i Coroner WHITING desires us to state that tho report which prevailed of NUGENT being tho pos? sessor of $1600 proves to be incorrect. The testi? mony published below is all of the evidence that was elicited at tho investigation, and contains a full report of the case. Richard Murphy testified-That the deceased came to board with him on the second day of Oc? tober, and died on tho 12th. That he left depo? nent's house about eight, o'clock A. M. of tho latter o'clock,: deponent was sent for and informed that something was wrong with Nugent, the deceased; and when deponent.came home he found Nugent lying on a setteo, with his head on a pillow. He felt bis pulse, found it very strong; raised np his head, gave him a drink of whiskey, and then wont for Dr. Yates. When he returned Nugent was dead, and deponent immediately notified the Coroner of the tacts. Deponent further testified that on tho day fol? lowing that upon which' th? deceased carno to board with him, Nugent and his comrade, Charles Earle, wont? te fjhe drug st?re qf .Messrs. Dnwaori & Blackman, in Broad street, bought live cents worth of the oil of vitriol, brought it home and deceased put seventeen drops of it into a glass of water and drank it. Deponent asked him what ho did this for and he answered "to make him sober." That when deceased put down the bottle, the oork slipped out and some of the liquor spilled and burnt bis clothes. That about the 5th instant the deceased deposited with deponent $160 in currency, and that deponent did not see him have any 8tli?r moiioy at that time or since. Deponent paid tie funeral expenses of the deceased. - filiarles Earle test\fled-TbtA he was a member of Company D, 17th United States Infantry, of which company lite deceased was ai so a member. Depo? nent was discharged from the Company on the 20th day of September last in Fernandina. Florida, and deeeased was discharged four days afterwards at the same place. They came to Charleston to? gether and boarded at Mr. Murphy's. So. 2 Queen Street. Deponent and deceased Were paid Off in Charleston. Deceased received something over $200 on the 3d instant. Docoased asked deponent to show bim where he could find a drag store, as he wanted to get some acid. Deponent went with bim to a drug store on Broad street, and deceased called for five cents worth of the oil of vitrol, which he obtained, put the phial in his pocket, went to the boarding house and took two drinks of whis? key with about ten drops of the Oil in each. De? ponent parted with the deceased about eight o'clock, A. M., on the day of his death. Deponent went to the boarding bouse about three, o'clock that afternoon, and found the docoased lying on tho settee. Deponent thought he was asleep. About a half hour after that he found that he was dead. Deceased wac a very, intemperate man. Deponent had nev ev BCOU dene i sed ?rink oil of vitrol before that day. ' THE POST MOBTEX EXAMINATION. OH Ait i. ES TON, S. C., October 18,1867. I In compliance . with the regnest of the Cotnner of Charleston District, I made a po Ai mortem-tO. aminst'.sn of tho body of Tubman Reagent, who died October 12th, at the residence of Richard Murphy, No. 2 Queen street. I discovered tho fol? lowing conditions ; On removing the integument covering the cranium, I found a quantity of dark blood [and on entering tho cavity a large ?mount Of sanguinary fluid, with a quantity of the sftrno (coagulated) detected, situated between the me? ninges of the brain proper, j The organ itself was somewhat congos.tod. Tho above abnormal condi? tions were sufficient cause of death. r I afterward examined the stomach, and found it highly congested, showing thai some irritating fluid or substance bad entered therein. On exam-, ming the conte nta I thought I detected the smell of ardent spirits). He had been drinking on the day of hie death. It was reported that tho de flOTida?oBdffi tiling oil of vitriol, which, when taken in large doses, is ^The infovroilion olieited from those who witness? ed bis death, and the result of the post mortem examination, do not show that he waa poisoned by that drug. .. My opinion is tbat he died from apoplexy. JOSEPH YATES, M.D. SAFETY RIDING.-"M.
