A splintered spar, a tattered shred
Of pennon rent from top-meat heed

White slab to mark the London's grave;

Sad thought, w o wcund a.d aet at laat ?
Whoas life ran down at ten ?-half-past ?
A woman's gown-the saddest trace.
A bit of dainty, ruined lace!
Who wore it ? Whose poor heart lay light
Beneath these folds of stainless while r
A baby bat with scarlet crest ;
Who rocked the little thing to rest ?
This glove T The waving hand ! Wb'J ll tell

PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY
OF
MEDICINE AND SURGERY.
rlHE PHILADELPHIA UNTVEESITi' OF MEDICINE
AND SURGERY was organized in 19*8. Chartered
)ylhe Legislature, February 36.1863. Name changed
)v a legislative enactment to the Eclectic Ifccdi cal Col?
ene of Philadelphia, in 1860. In 1863 lt purcius ed the
Pennsylvania Medical College, established In 1512, and
he Philadelphia Medical College, which had prevtorsaly
seen merged into the Pennsylvania Medical College, Jp
IB6A lt purchased the Penn Medical Univewily. Thu
Trustees of the separate schools united, petitioned and
jbtained a special Act of the Lepta .a turo, consolidating
tneee institutions and cha. ging their names to that of the
Philadelphia University of Medicine and Surgery,
Ma.-ch 16,1865. All these various Acta are publi bed lu
the statutes of Pennsylvania. The cost of the t uilding
iud museum waa over one hundred thousand dollars. It
?ill be observed that the University, as now organized, is
the legal representative of the lour Medical Colleges that
it has absorbed. It is a liberal school of medicine, con?
fined to no dogma, nor attached lo any medical clique
but embraces Tn its teaching everything of value to the
profession.
Staion t.-lt has two foll sessions each year, commenc?
ing on the 1st of October, and continuing until the 1st of
January, as its first session, and from the 1st ol January
to the 1st ol April, as its second; the two constituting one
full course of lectures. It has also a summer session,
commencing the lat April sad continuing until August,
for the preparatory branches, such as Latin, Greek,
Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Anatomy

are sarto".
Students, by holding scholarships, ctn prosecute other
business a part of the time.
The candidate for graduation can present himself at
any time, and receive nie degree as soon as qualified.
In casca stn ent should bold a scholarship and not be
able to attend lectures, it can be transferred to another,
thus preventing any losi>.
Parents, guardians or friends of students wishing to
purchase scholarship tor them a year or more before
their attendance at the University, can secure them by
advancing one-half the price and paying the balance
when the student enters. Physicians and benevolent
men can bestow great benefit upon poor young men by
