FIRE.-The alarm of tire on Thursday evening was cairned hy tho bursting of a keroseno lamp in a grocery r-itaro at the corner of Vernon ?nd Wharf j streets The lamp was upon the counter, and beyond the burning of a few papers, tho explosion was attended with no damage. Thc .engines were out with their accustomed promptitude; but no bella were .nmg, and the excitement, was soon al? lay ed. -o HOOF. COTTON STALK. -Wo Baw yesterday a mon? ster spechuen ni n sea island cotton stalk, seven and a half foot, high, having on it over seventy bolls in various Btagca of development. Tho plant came from the plantation of Mr. BAOHMAN on tho Ashley, about seven milos from the city. The ene? my of the silky staple had, however, overtaken it, and there were on this stalk several ot tho " wur? ruma," lively and kicking. There are few pictures more distressing than a fine sea ?Bland cotton field falling the prey of these relentless devourers, and the luckless planter standing by helpless as in the presence of fate. A REPREHENSIBLE PRACTICE.-There are a cer* tain olass in every community who generally BU:? ceed in making themselves obnoxious to the pub He, and Charleston ia not without her allotted share, of these characters. It has been the prac? tice fot the idle boya of the oily, both white aud colored, to place bricks or stones upon the track of the etreet railway, causing the&are to jolt and i ock in a disagreeable manner. The drivers and conductors are always on the look out for these obstructions, but the drat intimation is generally the concussion. We would" suggest to tho police authorities to have these little vagabonds arrested and severely punished whenever discovered. The obstructions on the traok are a source of great an? noyance to":the travelling public, and if the offend? ers were set to work breaking stones in a legiti? mate manner, they would soon retorna. MAYOR S COT/BT.--The only excitement in the judicial precincts was caused hy the arraignment of a citizen, whose dog had feloniously attacked a passing stranger, and had given practical illustra? tions in dont-??try. It was evident that neither the injured party nor his Honor agreed with Dr. WAT?, "Let dogs delight to bark aud bite, for God hath made them so;" for the owner of the animile wa^ fined *;>, and ad? vised to restrain tho carnivorous propensities of his brute by muzzling him. It is fortunato that the season for hydrophobia has passed, for if the bittes individual should he attacked, ?S in the City Treasury would be a poor compensation for his life. An aged African, who had passed the allotted three score and ten hy five' years, waa found ap? propriating cotton on North Atlantic wharf. In consideration of his age and former good charac? ter, he was discharged, promising amendment if he lived so long. CATOLOOY.-It has always been esteemed a diffi? cult matter to educate pli animais of the feline ape?les, but in some instances they have been in? duced to forget their natural antipathy to man, and have, under a thorough trawling, booome orv nameuti totheir race. . We have ?heady referred to the educated cat? of the Exprese Office ss noble sp$d???53 of feline sagacity, bat their owner, Mr. FOBD, ha? lately received several additions to bis happy fatally. . These are of all sizes and various colore, from, i black to ?.M^dl?-? At a call froii their master, obedient to the sound of his voice, they hasten from all parts of the building and ni gage in certain, calisthenic performances. They ?re Admirably trained, and display a degree of in? telligence which few..persons imagino the despised puss is capable of r#eiving. Their prineipal'feat is ground and 16ft/ tumbling, which would do credit to some experienced circus actor?, ?nd, if placed on exhibition in BARSU'M'? Museum, they would attract as much attention as his gotilla, and would Induce some of the strong-minded, blne epeotscled females pf that ilk to petition Congress fer cat suffrage. TM PBESSUBE tit' THE COTTON M?ABJOMP.-The Press has always been considered a mighty engine wielding immense power, and capable of. making or marring a oouuty. Th;? extraordinary influ? ence has been usu ali y attributed to HOE of print? ing notoriety, and, while we will not detract from its merits KS we are indebted to it for our DAILY NEWS, yet ? notice of other patents would not be ?BUSS. Om- neighbors, Messrs. GBONINQ SC COATES, hAVeheen recently testing the capacity 6f their ?tea? cotton press to its full extent. CORONER'S INQUEST.-A few days ago we report? ed un attempted suicide by PETER WOOD, residing in Trodd street. WOOD was removed to the City Hospital in Hampstead Boon after tho occurrence and died a few hours after his admission, under circumstances which caused the Physician of tho Hospital to I 'oink that the unfortunate man had made a second attempt at his lifo by poisou. Coro? ner WHITINO hold a Jury of Inquest yesterday over the body, and after a posl-mwlem examination by Di\ P. P. POBOHKH, Ihysician of the Hospital, it was found that tho unfortunate man had not at? tempted his own destruction a second time, hut died of "conjostive fever of tho abdominal type.' A verdict to that effect was rendered. lt. R. R.-Our curiosity was aroused yesterday on seeing a handsome span of horses drawing a light covered buggy, with the mystic letters "R. R. R." paintod handsomely and conspicuously on its sides. Supposing that tho owner of this estab? lishment waa a travelling teacher of the three r's Reading, Hiting and Rithmelic-we started in pur? suit, hoping to secure his services. Let the reader, therefore,, judge of our astonishment when we found that it was no othor porsonage than Mr. DANIEL MOCALLUM, the itinerant agent of the House of RADWAT S? Co., and thc mystic letters his buggy boro were no other than tho initials for Radway's Ready Relief. To think that in this age of railrovds, steamboats, balloons, &c, there could be found oue who would venture such a slow paco RB to come overland from tho city of Now York to this State. This Mr. McC. has done in thia same buggy, and with these same horses. ,The pro? prietor is determined to visit all of tho Southern States, and if the way is long and tedious, it has its advantages also, and will redound to tho inter? ests of his house. The sentence of the Court will not be divulged until it is published in General Ordere. The Judge Advocate was assisted in the prose? cution by Colonel A. J. WILLARD, Solicitor Af the 2d Military District. The accused was defended by E. DFTREVILLE. Esq., assis tod by D. T. COBBIN Esq. THE rou I. TONQUE OF sr. ANDEE will wag us long aa there are bad men, unscrupulous in their choice of means to further their own selfish ends. The latest instance of the Lind thal has come to our attention is the report, now industriously being circulated in the up country of this Btato and of Georgia, that the yellow fever is prevalent in this city. A friend who returned. from Atlanta yester? day, informed us that he heard these reports various localities. We have often spoken of the health of the city, better this year, we behove, than that of any other city in the Union. We have published weekly mortuary reports;' we have again and again called attention to these facts, well au? thenticated, and challenging contradiction yet there are people mean enough to circulate these] lying reports, hoping to damage our com? merce; and we are sony to say there are always people simple and credulous enough to believ these irresponsible rumors, and thoughtless enough to repeat them and giVe them further cur? rency. Once again, then, we will affirm, and we do it with all the emphasis at our command, that thero has not been, daring any time this Summer, nor is there now, a single case of yellow fever in this city or within a hundred miles of it. There has, moreover, not been a single case of any epi? demic disease in Charleston during the present season. Will our friends in the interior be kind enough to circulate the above categorical denial to all ru? mors or statements of this character? H. n. Its great strength on account of being double-geared, which not only doubles the strength by dividiug the strain on twice the number of teeth, but by gearing on botb sides of the wheels it equalizes tho wear on tho shafts, and material')' lessens the fricUon, enabUng the horses to do much moro work than with anj other Power. 2. Ita compactness and extreme portability, it weighing about cue-half as much as other Horse Powers, and occu Sying but one-third the space, it can be packer1 In small oxes, thus saving much expense. It is so simple that the most ignorant person would have no difficulty in putting lt together. 3.
