How any parties could perform this job without attract? ing the attention of the polico, appears singular, and the only surmise ?B, that they worp not around. OP THE UV rr ED STATES, al>,nu toa days ?go >VU?J awarded, by Mr. MOPI?KBSON, tbo Clerk of tho House of Represen? tativos, to two papers published in this State, viz : tho Sumter Nows !?nd tho Oharlostou Advooato. Whether from a fooling of modos ty ut having such honor? thrust upon thom, or somo other cause, unknown to us, neither ol tho two happy recipients have thus far made any public uu uouncomont of t ho fact! Yesterday afternoon wu learned that so far us the Sumter News is concern od, tho Congressional patronago has been with? drawn again. We did not loam tho reason, but surmise that its recept change of editor and poli? tics uiny.perbaps have tomethlng to do with it. AH it is Understood that no paper eau receive this public printing, that in not fairly and squarely Republican, WO presume the South Carolina, Leader will make a strong bid for it ; and there is no reason that wo can see why it uhould not be entitled to this blfof pap, with fully as much righi as its fellow Radical weekly, the Charl?slon Adv?cale. -o-: MAYOR'S COURT.-A freedman, who wished to make IUB way through the world without trouble, endeavored to walk through tho market with an ope? umbrella. As this conduct WOB not accord? ing to Hoyle, tho freedman was asked to close bis parasol; ho doclined, and became obstreperous, when he was arrestod by tho police. Ile was tined $5, and ono of his companions who had attempted a rescue, received tho samo punishment. Five culprits answered to tho roll call, and plead guilty to the charge of occupying moro of the sidewalk than was their just*privilege. It appear? ed to be a unanimous nffair, and was character? ized as tho heavy drunk. One woman who was of the party, went tn with a WU, and succeeded hi raisin? a small toiupoBt. The immortals were considerably embalmed when discovered, but were sent to tho grand rendezvous forbad spirits, and allowed to recover under a treatment of a pine board for a pillow. Tho delinquents did not mur? mur at tho change, remembering that it was a pleasant thing for brethren tu live together in unity. THE I'AP. M AND GARDEN.-WO have received the October number of this Agricultural Magazlno, and fully concur with tho editor that it is the best number yet issued ;, indeed. tr.? I'Maxwd Chardon has been increasing it? faciHties for imparting useful information, evor sinoo its organization. Starting originally as an experiment, it han be? come a success, and as far as we know, is tho only agricultural journal in this State. The number before us, beside the usual reading matter, con? tains a numbor of illustrations that add conside? rably to the interest of th > work. The subscrip? tion price, $1 per annum, is a mere bagatelle, and we trust that the agricultural portion of the com? munity will not bo backward in encouraging tins enterprise. Mr. JAMES R. JACOBS, tho editor, is Well known in this city, being a gradua to of Charleston College, and is fully capable of conducting the arduous position he has undertaken. | His journal speaks for itself, and wo can give no botter not ice than thc following extract from its pages: " Ibis number of our monthly is, we believe, the best in arrangement, illustration, reading mat? ter, Ac, that we have yet issued. Wo aro do tor mined, and we hope our friends by this time lind out. that the 'Farm and Garden* shah be a first class agricultural journal. We call upon the peo? ple of tho State to Bee that this, their naper, be amply supported.- More subscribers will enable us ?tili further to improve, and wo promiso ihat every additional $1, lom; subscription price) re? ceived shall be applied to the improvement of our magazine. And surely twenty-four pages of auch reading matter aa we give monthly, and so often illustrated, is worthy the paltry sum asked for subscription." THE REOPENING OF THE FBEE SCHOOLS. -The first Monday in October has long boon tho opening day of the Froo Schools of this city, and at ?u early hour yesterday morning Ibo Btroets in the vicinity of tho different sohools were alive with nhildren anxious to recommence their studies and to have their names registered. During the vaca? tion tho Board of Commissioners have perfoctod l?verai changes in thc organization of the schools. We have already alluded to tho Morris street School, which has been set apart for the education sf the colored children, and which has Bteadily in? creased in favor since it was organized. ? Fifty idd^ionai pupils werai, enrolled yesterday, making bio number registered nearly five hundred. This ichool was opened two weeks ago, and is now in Uli operation. About four hundred pupils were registered yesterday, but tho morning ivas principally occupied in arranging the classes md accustoming the scholars to tho discipline of thc ' school. The Commissioners have made ar? rangements for the accommodation of between five hundred and B?X hundred pupils, and should this number bo accepted it will necessitate an elect ion Df two or moro assistant teachers. At present the Principal, Vico Prinoipal and five Assistante con? stitute tho o&rps. In arranging the building it was found necesssry to furnish new settees and other furniture for the Assembly Hall ; the contract for a portion of these was awarded to Mr. C. Notwith? standing the comparatively short notice, those settees, '??c., were xurnlshed in ample time ind reflect great credit upon the maker, while some articles of Behool furnituro that were ordered from tho North have failed to reach the aity. Thia is called tito law of coincidence. . We were forcibly reminded <?f thin tho great law of chance yesterday aftoriftjon, when wo had tho honor of a visit to our sanctum from Prof. W. C. KERB, iStalo Geologist of North Carolina, Dr. ?. A. PBATT, Analytical Chemist, of Hub city, and Prof. FRANCIS w. HOLSTES, of Charleston College. Tho two former hail boon to Prof. HOI.MKH' plaid?t ?OH yesterday morning, near Ashley Perry, about ten m ilea from th m 'city, to examino the bcd (|>ont plfiioi-cne dep. ^it) yo descrilmd.it ?mi o length iu our iesuo off?CTvdayj rThoj were armed with tho geologist's tunal tools, pick and hammer, and went to work, and ?OOH bud reason to bo more Utan satisfied with the reward ol their labor. They found n piece of thc bono (dorsal vertebra) of tho mammoth, but thin bas long censed to bo an object of curiosity, so many of tho remains of extinct, animals having already been found in thin bed. They kopi on itt their search, and presently saw on tho Bloplng beach a Jagged object project? ing about ono and a half inches from the sand. They bogau to dig, and noon unearthed, to their delight and amazement, a human thigh bono, en tiro with tho exception of the lower articulation. The bono is sixteen inches in length ; heavy enough to ind?calo petrifaction, yet not sufficient? ly so to lea l us to suppose that it waa entirely petrified, The cellular structure in the centre is in perfect preservation. The outor covering only weeld appear to have undergone poUunction. Ita general appearance in every respect is preoisely Bimilarto that of tho fossil usually found in the post-pleiocono dep03ita. This femur was found a few feet from the bono of tho mammoth referred to above; and near it n ?mall fragment, (nine and u hair inches long) of a human tibia, apparently be? longing to tho same period ni tho others we have mentioned. Professor KERR and Dr. PRATT also fouu I a small pioce of pottery, similar to several pieces in Professor HOLMES' possession. This is a very important discovery, and wo do not wonder that Professor HOLMES' enthusiasm is at fever boat. Alter looking for human bones in this bed for upwards of twentv-o?-? *-???, ri is singular tb^-io otiuuui Uaro boen found at last by oLhors, who wero there casually on a first visit, Professor HOLMES not being with thom. As a curious coincidence wo may also refer to the fact of our having direotod public attention to the sub? ject only I wo days ago-in Saturday's NEWS-?nd there having askod the question, Why human bones have not boen discovered in a atratutu giving so many other evidencos of the presence of man? Soarcely was Ibo ink dry, when the ques? tion received a signally brilliant and perfectly con? vincing answer in tho femur discovered yesterday.
