ACCIDENT ON THE STEAMER ROCKLAND.-The steamer Rockland, of the Meant Pleasant Ferry Line, had her machinery deranged during her morning trip from tho city yesterday. She im? mediately put back to her wharf, and the damage investigated; it proved to bo but slight, and she will soon resume her usual trips. DAN. "THE SOUTHERN CROSS."-We published a poem under the abovo name, a few weeks ago, whLdi ap? pears to have fonndmuch favor, and we have been repeatedly asked for the name of the author. We have no information on tho subject, savo that we have tho assurance of the friend who sent it to us, that it was written by a lady of this State. If th; should ever reach nev ?yes, .we hope she will be encouraged to vcr tore upon another trip to Mount Helicon. , g COMMUNICATION BETWEEN - SA VANNA H AND CHAULES TON.-The links that unite these cities are being gradually drawn closer. The fine steam? ers PUol Boy, Captain W. T. MCNELTY, and Fannie, Captain FENN PECK, are now making tri? weekly trips, leaving each city every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. These steam? ers are thorough sea-going vessels, and are com? manded by Captains to whom "a lifo on the ocean wave" has^no terrors. The accommodations for both freight and passengers aro ample, aud tho trip made safe, short and pleasant. -o Rev. JOSEPH CROSS, D. D., WO learn, fell a victim to yellow fever in Texas. Dr. CROBS waa an Eng ushman by birth, but emigrated to the United States at an early age. Ho waa widely known as a minister, first of the M. E. Church, and afterward of the M. E. Church, South, having been connect? ed with some six or eight Conferences at different tunes, if we remember correctly. About 1804 he ?.'ame to Charleston, and for several y jaro had pastoral chargo of Trinity, and then of Bethel Methodist Church. He afterward was President of the Spartanburg Female College. During tho war lie chiefly labored iu Tennessee as Chaplain in the Confederate army. Immediately after ita close he took orders in the Protestant Episcopal Church, and at the time of his death waa Rec';or in Houatou, Texas. Dr. Cuoss was a man of largo talent and high culture. He was profoundly versed in theology and well road in the entire department of belles lettres. Ablo as an orator, and sometimes bril? liant, he was more pleasing to thc intellectual man than to the uninformed masses. He had studied rhetoric as a scienco aud practised it as an art. His sentence never was faulty, and his thought, gorgeously clad, alw?; s impressed thc mind of tho hearer. Ho wac a voluminous writer, and his books, while giving evidence of but littlo originality, al? ways boro testimony of patient industry, applied V by a mind capable of appreciating iu and culling from others all that is good. Notwithstanding all tho gifts with which boun? teous nature had endowod him. he cannot be said to ha", e been to any considerable degrees suc? cessful man; and care and trouble seem to have been his co?tant companions through life. He leaves in this city aud throughout the State a large number of friends to mourn his loss. Re quiescal in pace. THE MOEBI8 STREET FREE COLORED SCHOOL. Thia budding, which was occupied for nearly two years by the Freedmen's Bureau as a aehoobjor the colored children of the city, was recen*ly surren? dered to the Board of Commissiouers. On the re organization'of the Public Schools, among other changea it wa? do termine J to devote the Morris Stree! School House to the tuition of the colored children. Tue school was opened for this pur? pose last week, and though the at tea Janeo was elim an the first day, it has since steadily increas? ed, and there a:o now nearly four hundred pupils enrolled, while others am received daily. Since the reoccupation of the school by the Board it has been thoroughly refitted, and is now tho best and mo?t complete school building iu tho city. The Board have spared no pains to bring the Morris Street School to perfection. Theiervices of an experienced corps of teachers have teen ob? tained, and the facilities for both the intellectual and physical cultur- of the pupils are unequalled by any school in the city. The locatiou ot this school tendera it admirably suited for ?ie purposes in? tended, as tho houses iu the vicinity are occupied principally by colored persons. lu the arrange? ment of th? school, great care has been taken to render the pupils comfortable, and a large play ground on either side of the building affords ample space for the recreatiou of thc pupils during th? recess. The first floor of tito building is assigned to the Primary .Dep?tment, where the colored children of both sexes are taught their A B C's. -A piano in thia d?partaient discourses sweet sounds, while the voices of the children unite in singing the hymns, which are part of the exercises. Tho second and third floors are assigned to the female and male grammar departments. Attached to each .?tory aro four comfortable class-rooms, well ventilated and furnished with stoves. Five classes can be easily .managed by tho teachers, as one remains in the large room, but on au emergency others could be added. The-school has accommodations for soo .or 900 pupils, and though only abradion of ttiat number has been enrolled, yet the Board anticipate a full attendance In a short time. There are numbers of colored children in the city who do not attend any school, but spend their time in idleness. It is for these, equally with the moro studious, that this frae school was organized, i he advantages of.a good education are now appreciated bv the moat ignorant, and we strougly urge upon the colored citizens to scud their children to some school. We do not wish to ignore the many other schools in the city, they are ably managed, and have achieved a great success, but none can equal that iu Morris street in point ot' comfort and in the ntcnities offered for the bodily and mental curtuie of the scholars. 'Ute building was con? structed for ti schoolhouse, is well ventilated, aud furnished with all of the modern appliances which are used in the Northern schools. The system of tuition is one that has received the approbation of experienced teachers North and South, and pupils entrusted to the caro of tho Principal will receive every attention., and be en? abled to secure an education that will fit them for future usefulness. A female SMITH, who had read the legend of her family, was so disgusted with ber coguomou that she iudulged in lamentations so long and loud that the neighbors were alarmed and sent the un? fortunate SMITH to a quiet place, where her noise would not be troublesome. May 1867. f The following Section of " An Ordinance to abolish the office 01 Spenutcndent of Streets ; to provide for Keep iug thc Streets' Lanes, Alleys, and open Courts in the City of Charleston Clean, and for other purposes," is hereby published for thc information of all concerned : For the due protection of the said contractor or con? tractors, it is further ordained, That every owner, lessee, occupant and tenant of any premises fronting in any street, lane, alloy, or open court, shall ou every day (Sundays excepted) have tho dirt, filth, garbage, or other offal, placed in front of his or her lot, in a barrel, box or heap, and in readiness for the contractor, by tho hour of seven o'clock, A M., from tho first day of May to the first day of November in every year ; and by the hour ol nine o'clock, A. M., from tho first day of November to the first day of May following. And any person offend? ing herein, or placing any dirt, filth, garbage, or other offal, in any street, lane, or alley, or open court, after tho hours above named, shall be subject tc a fine not lesa than two nor more than five dollars, for each and every offence, to be imposed by the Mavor.
