CHEAP ARTICLES.-Wo have frequently noticed in our Wilmington (N. C.) exchanges that articles of prime necessity are qnoted as having been sold at prices much below our market rates. Tho article of hay we have noticed lately as having been sold from the wharf at 90c., while here it was $1.25 per bund -ed, and yesterday we observed that 60 tons red ash coal was disposed of ai $6.50 per ton ; price here, $9.50. Why this is so dees not appear. -o THE LOST FOUND.-We mentioned, a few days ago, that an infant lost in the street in front of Dr. OG m's residence was found and taken .care of by the officers ot the city gn ernment. Since then, thanks to the wide-awake effective search of our detectives, the parents of thc child have also been found-they are from the rural parts-re? adopted the foundling, and leit for their native haunts. Whether or not the reunion was a joyful one our reporter did not learn. -o DEAF, DUHT AND BLIND ASYLUM.-During a re? cent visit to Raleigh, N. C., (says the Wilmington Evening Star; it was our pleasure to visit this ex? cellent institn.ion, and, through the courtesy of of its accomplished principal, Mr. W. J. PALMEB, we were condictcd through its different depart? ments. Ther<> are, at present eighty pupils, and applications have been made to dil ttie building to its utmost capacity. Its corps of teachers is un? surpassed by any institution of the kind, and Mr. PALMER has shown rare talent in selecting and recommending Mich for their several positions. We cannot forbear mentioning Mr. JOHN SIMPSON, the blind professor in music-such gen: is, such delicacy of touch, such display of uonl, wo have seldom seen in the most distinguished piauist of the day. "DE.-An adopted daughter of a l*ay residing in Spring street, Mrs. KLOSE, (the girl only abom fifteen years old), it has been as certained, ht? been stealing from Mrs. K. at dif? ferent times d iring the present .mon til about $170, money laid by 'in case of sickness" or other un forseen exigency. Mrs. JOSEPHINE ABBOTT, who resides in the vicinity, it appears, has incited her to this deed of turpitude. The girl invested her ill-gotten gains in the purchase of gew-gaws and finery, yclept dry goods-the greater vast of which have been recovered. Mrs. ABBOTT shared in the possession of said dry goods. Officers MYERS and DAVTB had this case in hand, and ai rested the guilty parties, who have since been turned over to a magistrate for prosecution. BROAD STREET is in a fair way, we believe, of soon receiving a now carpet-pavement, we mean. The "rocks" that in, othei days we were wont to see in the bank vaults and brokers' safes along that Rialto, have taken wings unto themselves, and their only representatives are tho boulders piled np outside, come there at O'DONNELL'S bid? ding. Mr. O'DONNELL is ready. He has the "rooke," and the sand that has so long been a grievous eyesore in the rear of the old postoffice has been carted to Broad street, ready to be used in the construction of the new pavement. The City Engineer, we are informed, has been engaged for several days, with compass, level, theodolite, sextant, quadrant, or other geometrical instru? ments, to get the proper slope. The railroad track, we presume, will have to be taken up and relaid; this, however, will be merely a temporary inter? ruption, during whioh time the blue flag cars will have a monopoly of the travel. THE CHABOT OP THE STREET BBIOADE_The rue in urbe has Vways been a favorite theme with town poets and essayists; and yet by a sin? gular m congruity, "grass growing in the streets'" has ever been a by-word and a reproach to a city. Why there should bo euch an insuperable objac tion to have anything "green" in the city (save what is brought there from the country) we never could tully comprehend. Whether true or not we are unable to say; but we have been told that during the latter part of the late siege of Charles? ton, and for some months after the evacuation, it Vas not an uncommon sight to see doves and partridges in our streets and in the "Burnt District." But the city has been in proceso of reconstruc? tion since then. This reproach is being removed and, intent upon this laudable design, the street bngade is actively engaged in removing dvery blade of the cumbering verdure-making hay while the sun shines. We hope the time will not be far distant when there will be no Burnt District in Charleston, and the streets bo kept clean of grass, without the interposition of Gen. Mower's fcrces. -o SUMMERVILLE.-Few of our readers who have not lately been in Summerville have am idea ol the growth and improvement of thia little town during the past few years. It is altogether unlike its anti-former self: and the great secret of this steady and gratifying development has been the uniform salubrity of itt* climate. Summerville, long prior to the war, enjoyed considerable repu? tation as a resort for invalids, particularly such as suffered troni tubercular diseases; its climate uniting the advantages of proximity to the sea, and good, wholesome country air, largely freight? ed with the aroma of our long-leaved native pine, considered specially beneficial to Umso afflicted with &seases)of the respiratory organ*. Situated on a "pine barren," it has always been exempt from malarious influences: a boon that can be clain ed for few localities in thc low country. Thus we learn,that this year, when intermittent fever and the kindred types of miasmatic disease have been prevalent through the length and breadth of the land, Summerville has not had a single case of it. The doctors threaten to emigrate. The merchants and professional men of Charles? ton ara gradually Anding ont ihe advantages of a residence in the country, so convenient to their place of business; and, from what wo learu, we should think that even a larger number would avail themselves of these advantages if the ac? commodation train would be a little more accom modating-etart later from the city and run faster. Snmmerville, we think, bids fair, ere many years, +-> become a favorite resort. As an ertrtpot to in ralids suffering from lung or heart disease, who have spent the winter in Florida or the West In? dies, we know of no better locality anywhere in the South. MOUNT PLEASANT.-On Sunday afternoon last the Rev. L. MULLER, of tho German Lutheran Charon in Hasol stroet, at tho solicitation of tho Gomiau residouts, preached at tho Congregational Church in Mount Pleasant. Tho Germans attend? ed en masse, and soomed much edified with the sermon of this eloquent Divine. This, if we are not mistaken, is the first time that divine service has been conducted in tho German language in this ancient village. ADVEBTI9IN3.-The Scotch American Journal says : "The British people advertise far more ex? tensively than careless observers c n this side of the Atlantic have any notion of. Captain L B. GRANGER, of thia city^ having purchased an infaut dog, of a ferocious apecies, proceeded to trim his ears, a large pair of shears being U6ed in performing the operation. The circumstance had been almost forgotten by the owner, but not so by the dog, as we will pro? ceed to show. "A few days ago the Captain brought into his office, for 'PurpV consid?r?t ion, a large piece of beef, fresh from the market; and, wishing to di? vide it, the shears with which Purp'a ears had been clipped were produced for that purpose.
